I have announced to a tearful audience my retirement from starting game threads (after starting the new year 0-4-1). The only requirement for maintaining the game thread is to update the subject line with the current score, and list the goals in the top post.

And, yes, I'm tan (spent the week in Scottsdale in the sunshine test-driving the new Mini Cooper), rested (as best you can on a business trip where free liquor flows nightly), and ready (to sit by the fire - I'm still freezing back in NJ after seeing 78 and 82 degree days in AZ).
I've got to lose sooner or later. Only Ken Dryden can go unbeaten all season (him and that Cropper kid who must've been the backup), and 1970 was a long time ago.

He's entitled to some privacy even if family and friends and perhaps players know the condition. At the same time, if it comes out, so be it. I'd like to know a little more about what's affecting Mike and a bit less about what did in Anna Nicole Smith. (People magazine must be annoyed she checked out this week when it already had an awesome cover story prospect in the astronaut love triangle.)

Just knowing what I know about George Roll from his days at Oswego, and his first few years as head coach in Potsdam, I think he's an excellent coach with enough fire and coaching skills to keep the Clarkson program at a high level for years to come. EDIT: Of course, that's probably because you weren't there yet... but still, beating Cleary's Sucks squad in the ECAC QFs in 1990 was the most satisfying victory I remember against them, including the three times I've seen us beat them in the ECAC title game.

So far ugarte, the TWO PMs that I have now gotten in support, and I (4 total) all thought it was funny, and you're the only fuddy-duddy who didn't.
So you should probably think twice about trying to attack my position based on your belief that it is the minority position.

"Morris beats his players" is a running gag on this forum, and is entirely appropriate in a sequence specifically recalling running gags. If it were a basketball forum, I would've used Coach Knight. The point wasn't to express my opinion about the incident - it was a silly pun on the word "beat." A rivalry is usually at its best when both programs are peaking. Be it butting heads at the top of the standings or in the latter rounds of playoffs. Clarkson happened to have a few down years while Cornell tasted the top of the national rankings. The roles were reversed in the early nineties. But in the '96-'98 time-frame...good times for both schools, and a great time for that rivalry.
While Morris happened to be behind the bench during those years, as a fan, I really didn't care about beating *him.* I cared more about beating Todd White, JF Houle, Chris Clark, Willie Mitchell, Erik Cole, and Dan Murphy. It's the players on the great teams that most opposing fans focus on and loathe. Only in rare cases where a coach is so old/famous/outspoken (I guess the best example I can think of is Bobby Knight...Jack Parker or Red Berenson are the closest I can get to a college hockey example) do I as a fan care about beating a coach.
Morris never really did anything to make me mad at him or have any reason to taunt him. He ran a good program through my undergrad days. The coaches who were targets to me: Gilligan, Gaudet, Grillo, Tomassoni, Mazz, and Fridgen on occasion. (Wasn't around for ol' Baldy Cleary). None of them did I ever really relish beating. (exception: Mazz when he told his Miami team not to pack because they were staying another day at the '97 Western Regional. He never had a chance with me accepting him as a respected opponent at Harvard)
Now about getting offended by the joke made here, ryeguy...sure, it seems personal to you, but to the regulars around here, it's the equivalent of a late night host making "Michael Jackson molests boys" or "Paris Hilton slept with the NY Giants" jokes. It's hearsay and a one-off punchline. This board is mostly not serious. The less you react, the less often the joke will be made and vice versa (see Nickerson, Matt). Basically, when you remove your personal attachment to the situation, it is amusing. Remember what Mel Brooks said: Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die.
Hilarity is when Vermont players do the elephant walk which cancels their season.

The way you talk about it and your use of comparisons does make me see how it could be used as a joke and nothing more. (Not that what happened was a joke.) I do know Mark Morris and grew up going to his hockey camps, so I hope you can see why it would offend me. There is really nothing to apologize about (on my part or anyone else) but I can say that I would not have kept this going had you posted this earlier. It was well said. Thanks Rich. I now see how what Robb said should be taken as nothing more than a joke. I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it. So let's just end this and go back to prior discussions. You got what you wanted out of me.
