Title: The End of Huggy Bear?
Post by: Jeff Hopkins '82 on January 20, 2007, 04:19:00 PM
I stopped by the Campus Store yesterday afternoon.  I was surprised to see the leaning bear (i.e. my avatar) on all sorts of souvenirs, clothing, etc.  I did not see a huggy bear logo on anything.

I hope this means a permanent change is coming.

I'm afraid not, if my understanding is correct. The bookstore has access to the University service marks, such as leaning bear, and puts that on the sports apparel it sells. Huggy bear is a concoction of Athletics and is theirs to use; if you go to Lynah for a game there's a table with all sort of huggy bear items for sale.  The reason I heard (probably on eLynah) that Athletics created huggy bear was that they had to get approval from the University each time they wanted to use leaning bear and got fed up with the aggrevation.

Athletics can't get rid of the (horrible) huggy bear.  Think of all the money Ted Mosby must be paying them? :-D

Are you saying that Athletics doesn't have full reign to use all approved Cornell trademarks?  That's just insane.

FYP. Also, it could be an internal accounting issue. Big corporations have a lot of seemingly inane rules like this that budget offices and accountants find necessary.

Is it free rein?  I never knew that.  I thought it had to do with the reign of a monarch, not those of a horse.

Live and learn.
