Title: Brown
Post by: Steve Rockey on November 02, 2006, 11:15:56 AM
I am going to the Brown game.  Any suggestions on where to eat before the game or where to grab a drink after the game.

Brown used to be paired with Harvard, so most social activities for the weekend centered in Boston.  Not many of us spent a heck of a lot of time in Providence.  There's a collegetown-like area within walking distance of the arena and campus centered around Thayer Street.

This site can also get you started:

I've always found this place to be very tasty, with good beer:

One of my friends a few years back went to PC, and he swore by this one hot dog joint.  I think it was called Spike's or something.  Anyone from the area know what I'm talking about?  Apparently they have huge, cheap, tasty hot dogs.

Spike's is a chain.  It's good, but nothing to travel distance for.  Especially you, since you live near me and there's one in Davis Square.

If I'm going someplace only once a year, I'd rather hit a good local joint.

Let's hope it's just once.

Spike's is on Thayer street, just a street over from the rink.

There's a decent fish place (McCormick and Schmick's) across from Kennedy Plaza in the Biltmore Hotel. There's also a decent, inexpensive Indian place in the food court of the Providence Place Mall. Thayer Street, near Brown, is like Collegetown, with lots of decent "hand food" places, and a few sit-down places, like Kabob and Curry for pretty good Indian food. Wickenden St., about ten blocks south of Brown, has lots of good choices for a sit-down meal with knife and fork. If you arrive early and want lunch, Olga's on Point St. across from Wickenden is terrific. After the game, there are some good places on Main St. downtown, where you can grab something to eat or drink, listen to jazz, or look for company. If you like Italian, you can go up Federal Hill, a place known for being the hangout of real Tony Soprano types, among other things. (But be prepared to wait on a Friday night.) Pick up a copy of the Providence Phoenix (free) to find out what's happening on the entertainment/club scene.

The only meal I remember having in Providence was at an Irish restaurant called Ri Ra.  It was good.

My dad and I are going to try to make it to the Trinity Brewhouse by 5, but it's extremely unlikely given the traffic around that time.  Maybe we'll see some of you there.
