Re: Cornell-Maryland NCAA lax 2013 - 10 years ago
A bit surprised by the lopsided score yesterday. Could have been 17-8 since on the last possession, looked like a Cornell player, at point blank range with an open Maryland net, simply held the ball. One could argue that the Cornell offense really is #1 in the country when you think about a number of games where Cornell purposefully did not score, or a Cornell TO was called to eradicate a Cby margolism - Other Sports
Re: Myth of the Hot Hand ... no myth? - 10 years ago
I would argue that the same data set should also be able to indicate the presence of a cold hand / "cold streaks." A player playing with the flu, for example, would likely not perform as well (not really rocket science) and through the course of a game (or the illness) may have what is seen as a "cold hand" or "cold streak." The same rationality that works for explby margolism - Other Sports
Re: Cornell-Maryland NCAA lax 2013 - 10 years ago
I think the NCAA selection committe wanted to see Cornell-Maryland play this season, two storied teams, two teams coached by Cornell alums, two teams with a championship drought. Perhaps they figured, with all the parity this season, unexpected upsets, etc., this would be the only way to guarantee it.by margolism - Other Sports
Re: Myth of the Hot Hand ... no myth? - 10 years ago
Speaking as a real statistician (B.S. Statistics, CALS '93), I didn't find the overall article terribly surprising. But we need to step back and really understand the greater context in which these streaks occur. Big data can reveal patterns that simplistic analysis will never reveal. However is the correct conclusion that "success did slightly increase the chances of subsequent succesby margolism - Other Sports

Interesting article. Didnt think that some would predict such a large margin of victory for Cornell.by margolism - Other Sports

Re: Ivy lax tournament 2013 - 10 years ago
I think the game in Ithaca will be a bit closer. Princeton doesn't give up 17 goals very often. According to the record books, including Saturday's game, only four times since 1989. Last two times were to us (2005, 2013)by margolism - Other Sports

Also keep in mind there are a number of students on the team that I am sure would not qualify for any financial aid. As long as the athletes don't get special treatment in terms of financial aid packages vs. non-athletes, I am fine with it. For the "elite" hockey players that are legit pro prospects, I would imagine that they would choose a school based on which one will help themby margolism - Hockey

Good win. Nice to be 2-0 Ivy, against two of the top three (other than ourselves) league teams. Wonder if we would be undefeated if Mock played against Bucknell. Only loss thus far is by one goal, without our leading goal scorer.by margolism - Other Sports
Re: Big Line-up Changes for Brown Game - 11 years ago
BTW, when was the last time Cornell was shut out, at home, for a loss. (There was a 0-0 shutout tie, but at least they earned a point for that game.)by margolism - Hockey
Re: Big Line-up Changes for Brown Game - 11 years ago
I didn't include coaching in my list because the coaching staff has not changed from last season to this season. I would also expect the coaching staff to remain fairly consistent in appraoch and motivation, especially if there were no personnel changes. I don't think (but I could be wrong) that, with two Cornell alums on the coaching staff, they aren't doing all they can to instill a sense of Cby margolism - Hockey
Re: Big Line-up Changes for Brown Game - 11 years ago
Didn't Yale kind of have a season like this last year? If I recall, after two dominant years, last year was a downer for them, before stepping up again this season. I think Cornell's performance this season can be attributed to one or more of the following reasons: 1. Leadership - Perhaps this year's captains are not instilling the same attitude and ethic that last years's captains had 2.by margolism - Hockey

Re: Goalie situation this season - 11 years ago
Could Cornell conceivably dress a not-likely-to-play F or D as a goalie, or does the dressed player have to be listed on the team roster as a goalie?by margolism - Hockey
Re: Goalie situation this season - 11 years ago
Haven't heard that. I know that the primary backup goalie left Cornell to play pro. Are you saying that Kanji is out with an injury? If so, then there is no backup right now. Regardless, given that Kanji is a senior, looks like Cornell will want to recruit one more goalie next year (in addition to the one already listed as a recruit.)by margolism - Hockey
Goalie situation this season - 11 years ago
Just curious if Cornell is planning on going ahead with only two goalies on the roster. Has this happened before? Would they consider tapping into a goalie from the club team to have three on the roster? Just curious.by margolism - Hockey

ugarte Towerroad Trotsky This week Cornell did not receive a single vote in either the USCHO or USA Today poll for the first time in 62 polling weeks dating back to Nov 5 2007. Re: Cornell 5 Clarkson 1 (3rd period) - 13 years ago
I wouldn't have thought that our offense would be this decent, especially this early in the season. (We were ranked #15 in offense coming into tonight's game, and that stat included being blanked last night.) I expected us to be strong in defense coming into the season, and highly questionable on offense. So far, it's been the opposite. Glad to see our defense holding up tonight.by margolism - Hockey
