Re: What a difference one goal makes - 9 years ago
I do think that, from a recruiting perspective, if you don't get kids who were prolific scorers in junior hockey, it will be hard to convert them to prolific scorers at the college level. I don't know if you can rewire kids into top goal scorers. Many of the current (and past) forwards, in their junior leagues, just didn't score a ton of goals. Case in point for some currently recruited foby margolism - Hockey
Re: What a difference one goal makes - 9 years ago
Not sure how this compares to previous years, but through 23 games, we have been shut out 5 times already, or 20% of the time. (Actually, just under 22%.) This has resulted in four losses and one tie thus far. I believe four of those five games were ECAC games. I don't know if it is players not playing up to their potential, coaching, chemistry, or just poor luck, but it is clear that ourby margolism - Hockey
Re: What a difference one goal makes - 9 years ago
BearLover It is true that we were quite possibly one goal away from a national championship multiple times in the last decade (which makes the Yale and Union championships 10x more frustrating), but I don't think it's particularly farfetched to wonder where Cornell would be if they scored about one more goal per game. One more goal per game would give them an average--not even good, but averby margolism - Hockey
What a difference one goal makes - 9 years ago
It's amazing where this season would be if Cornell could just muster one more goal per game. 1. Our offense ranking (nationally) would be 28th in the country, a hair above the national median. Far better than where we are now at 54th in the country, which is not too far from the two lowest scoring teams in the land, Lake Superior State and Princeton. Two teams we lost to, to boot. 2. Re: Cornell at RPI - 9 years ago
Looking at the incoming recruits for next year, I don't see a bunch of prolific scorers joining the team. Looking at their stats thus far, of the 8 recruits listed for next year, 6 of them have a combined 16 goals.by margolism - Hockey

Re: Florida hockey tournement - 9 years ago
Trotsky margolism What is somewhat upsetting is how we are wasting the nation's top goaltender and defense. If our offense was simply middle-of-the-pack, say 30th in the country (out of 59), that would equate to one more goal per game. Add one goal to each of our games, holding our defense constant, and instead of being 5-6-2, we would be 7-3-5. Possibly better, since we probably would nby margolism - Hockey

Re: Alumni in the pros -- December 2014 - 9 years ago
I'm thinking small steps - highly unlikely that W-L would be eliminated entirely. At least this approach doesn't penalize (or award) a goalie based on stellar (or lousy) performance. I think W-L for in hockey for a goalie is especially unimportant. Here's an idea - maybe a goalie gets points based on the stars of the game. 5 pts = #1 star, 3 pts = #2 star, 1 pt = #3 star. That is more peby margolism - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the pros -- December 2014 - 9 years ago
Poor Scrivens again. Two losses in his last two starts, while giving up only three goals. And 42 saves on 44 attempts last night, above .950 The whole W-L for a goalie (or a pitcher in baseball) makes no sense. If a goalie gives up two goals or less and saves 90% or more of their shots, the goalie should not be pegged with a loss. Your team's lack of scoring is the reason for the lossby margolism - Hockey

Re: Denver @ Cornell - 9 years ago
Cornell #2 in nation in defense. (.04 goals behind the leader) Gillam #2 in nation in save %. (.002% behind the leader) As much as I really liked Iles, I feel a greater sense of confidence with Gillam between the pipes. He just exudes calm and confidence, especially after giving up a goal (which doesn't seem to happen but once a game.) Perhaps he doesn't feel the pressure a highly covetedby margolism - Hockey

Josh '99 Mangurian resigns "Columbia teams have built a new winning tradition* across our men’s and women’s sports" * "Winning tradition" refers to attempting to win at least one game per season. Can include victories over Division II, III, high school, junior high school, and elementary school teams. May not include all sports.
