Discussions about sports other than hockey
Re: Offtopic: Olympics - 22 years ago
Actually, I think it was Jim Lampley; I realized Jim McKay was a lot older and somebody else. Anyway, whatever his name is (the one who was wearing the Canada jacket after the last game), he looks really out of place talking to the hockey people, who are basically ESPN's hockey crew.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Knoepfli - 22 years ago
Well, it's struck me as an incredibly Swiss-looking name (moreso if you change the oe to an ö) and in German you certainly pronounce the K. Actually, I find it interesting that the English approximation Ka-nop-fel-i has four syllables, while the German Knöp-fli has only two. Of course, if you really spell it with an oe in Swiss German, you'd get the three-sylable Kno-ep-fli. But my impressionby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
NBC Idiocy (women's curling semifinal spoilers) - 22 years ago
Okay, so was I the only one who dutifully avoided possible sources of information on the results of the women's curling semifinals in hopes that NBC would show the USA-SUI match, waited around through about an hour of postgame after USA-GER hockey, watched the preview of the upcoming curling coverage, and then was utterly flabbergasted when Jim Lampley revealed the result of the match before NBCby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

I have a range of possible finishes that another ECAC watcher worked out if you want to compare your results (email me). UVM can finish anywhere from 9th to 12th.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Celebrations - 22 years ago
As much as I would have liked to do it against Clarkson, I hope we'll be celebrating a regular season title Friday[\I] night! (I hope to hear chants of "Clea-ry Tro-phy" over the LynahCam.)by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
ECAC Tiebreakers - 22 years ago
There are guidelines, which used to be on the ECAC website (back in the ECAC HockeyNet days). I saved a copy of it, although I supposed posting it back on the web myself would be a copyright no-no. I think I asked the people who run the current page to put it back. Anyway, there were four basic clarifications, which I'll paraphrase here: 1) For multiple team ties, as soon as you reach a stageby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Louie's Lunch - 22 years ago
I wonder if Louie's will take on some of Hot Truck's campus legend status now that all the Freshmen are living on North Campus. (Another reason this is a bad idea, BTW.) Of course, I lived on North all four years (except one summer at 660), but was introduced to Hot Truck over the years. Perhaps it will be something rediscovered annually by Sophomores who move to West, and introduced through tby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Campus bars - 22 years ago
Kid of like the Thirsty Bear on North Campus, which was also a victim of the 21-year-old drinking age. (Apparently UC Santa Barbara managed to hang onto their University Center Pub into the early 1990s, although I wasn't enough of a driker to find it before it closed.)by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

I just didn't see how not pointing out a page he could have found with two clicks was going to keep him from plagiarizing it. What should keep him from plagiarizing anything is that it's wrong. Curling - 22 years ago
BTW, has anybody else been enjoying the curling that they've shown after the hockey games? My Canadian colleague has been amused at the announcers having to explain so much of the sport, but in my first real exposure I'm finding it almost as fascinating as snooker. And it doesn't hurt that the US women are playing well, headed for the medal round. D'you suppose NBC will alter their original plby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
By "fish bowl" do you mean the dust bowl (which got landscaped my sophomore year), or is it something that predates even me? The only fishbowl I remember was in Uris.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

How about waiting across the street at 660 (site of many Hot-Truck-fueled all-night philosphical discussions)?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Joe's - 22 years ago
Joe's was great by my college tastes, and their Chicken Marsala ruined me for anyone else's. But a much better version of what Joe's should have been is Palazzio in Montecito, CA. A combination of highbrow pasta sauces with enormous portions that allowed you to get about four meals out of a full bowl for around $10-15, the clientele always seemed to be a mixture of grad students and fashion modby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: YUCK...WE LOST - 22 years ago
Actually, I think performance in the regular season will, on the whole, mean more next year. Even though nothing will be required to make the playoffs, all but the top four teams will have to win two playoff series (at least one of them on the road against a rested opponent) to even make it to Lake Placid, where the ECAC Championship will be decided.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
NCAA At-Large Bids - 22 years ago
The reason why finishing in the top 12 is not enough for Cornell to get an at-large bid is that neither anyone in the MAAC nor any ECAC team besides Cornell is in the top 12 according to the pairwise. So if Cornell doesn't win the ECACs, the MAAC and ECAC champions will come from outside the top 12; even if there are no other upsets in conference tournaments, it will mean a top-ten finish is neeby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
NCAA Selection Links - 22 years ago

Re: Nick Boucher - White Trash Presto - 22 years ago
Of course, Boucher is a special case, given that his antics led to a Cornell goal his Freshman year. (For those unfamilar with the story, Boucher skated over to taunt the Faithful on what he thought was a game-sealing ENG by Dartmouth, only to have David Adler deposit the puck into his vacated cage.) I think a lot of the frustration with him is that that particular Leon Lett-ism didn't cost Darby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: YUCK...WE LOST - 22 years ago
Um, whatever. We still get an Ivy banner if Dartmouth slips up next weekend and we share the title with Dartmouth and/or Harvard. And of course the Ivies are nice, but the real prize is the Whitelaw Trophy, and no one has to share that. The frustration at losing to Dartmouth is that they are the only ECAC team we didn't beat in the regular season this year. And we don't much care for their coby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
