Re: Lacrosse recruiting class - what does it mean? - 15 years ago
Josh '99TimVWhy do you suspect more success in the Hudson Valley? We've had some great recruits from there, recently Tommy Schmicker, Kyle Georgalas and Andrew Collins, but a lot more are from LI and CNY, where it seems to me with Tambroni's West Genessee pedigree and Hobart history we should be doing better. There don't seem to be a whole lot of West Genny players in the Ivies lately. Is it bby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Lacrosse recruiting class - what does it mean? - 15 years ago
Josh '99billhowardOf note geographically: The majority are New Englanders (attn Mike: it can be done), 2 from NYS, 1 from Canada (an under-the-radar recruiting locale the last three decades dating to the days of Alan Rimmer and Mike French), and 1 from California. But nothing from south of the Mason-Dixon line. You're comparing apples to oranges. The appropriate comparison to Schafer recruiting hby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: DVD of 1969 nat'l championship vs. Denver available - 15 years ago
Al DeFlorioACMWonder why it says the game location was the U.S. Air Force Academy, when the game was played at the Broadmoor World Arena. Dunno. Did the NCAA have "hosts" for tournaments back then, and someone confused "host" for location? Or maybe someone saw Colorado Springs and figured it must be the Academy. Strange. Nor, for that matter, does mastery of the Engliby Swampy - Hockey
Re: Men's lax to play UVA - 15 years ago
billhowardCould it be UVA coach Dom Starsia is one of the true gentleman coaches of lacrosse, and being a Brown grad, has a soft spot in his heart for the Ivies? Not to replay a question more than three decades old, but: How did Starsia ever escape Richie Moran's recruiting web? I think Starsia was a football player who picked up lacrosse after he started at Brown.by Swampy - Other Sports

jtwcornell91BCrespiSwampymnagowski I'm not really for bashing the other schools. But I will point out that Cornell has considerably strong alumni networks in California (the weakest seem to be in the Midwest), and that you can't get a beautiful sunset like the type that appear over Libe Slope at most other schools. That said, if UCLA was significantly cheaper than Cornell, go to UCLA. And yoby Swampy - Other Sports

CornellFanhttp://cornellbigred.com/index.asp?path=mbball&tab=mens Hummm, I wonder if they deliberately pick coaches from mid-major schools so that there's no dirty recruiting. If the pre-college kids trying out for the team will all be looking at elite programs, the mid-major coaches, who won't stand a chance competing for these kids, will not waste their time recruiting kids at the tryoutsby Swampy - Other Sports

Re: Collin Robinson-Basketballl - 15 years ago
It's amazing that he says the only thing that concerns him now is the academics. With all due respect to USC, if general academics "are the focus right now," then surely one would choose Cornell over USC. Perhaps he left Cornell because USC's broadcast journalism program is so outstanding, but the article doesn't mention this. Perhaps he also didn't like Ithaca weather or wanted to bby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Ivy grants Glynn another year of eligibility - 15 years ago
Jim HylaYeah, our only problem is goalie, goalie, goalie. Yes, our defense was somewhat suspect at times, but I expect that to come around. The offense also didn't seem to stay in groove, trying too hard one on one, when backing off and letting someone else try would have been the best option. However, that should correct with maturity, goalie on the other hand??? Don't forget that Martinez wasby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Conn Smythe Winners - 15 years ago
jkahnBrian Leetch is the only other college player who has won the Smythe, and he only had one year at BC. Dryden played the 3 year max at Cornell (freshmen were ineligible then) and Joe played for three years also. Didn't they play on frosh teams? How'd they do?by Swampy - Hockey
Keir Ross - 16 years ago
Big Red Puckhead reports that the Omaha Lancers won the Clark Cup (Tier I junior national hockey title), but that Keir Ross did not play. In fact, Ross did not play in the Lancers' last three games. Since blueliner Ross led the USHL in +/- (+39 for the season) and is an assistant captain on the national champions, I would expect him to be playing in the championship. Re: Cornell vs. OSU Postgame - 16 years ago
ebilmes Not sure how you fail to stop the goalie on an end-to-end rush. It's bad enough in hockey if some guy is allowed to waltz in past 2-3 skaters and score, but this was a terrible way to start the game. I didn't watch the game and only saw this play as the #1 play of the day on ESPN's top-10 (ouch!). Nonetheless, in theory one of our attackmen is supposed to ride the goalie and make him pby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Sabres Sign Nathan Gerbe - 16 years ago
amerks127 Well that and he's only going to make $850,000 a season, which works well for the Sabres considering that stupid contract they gave Vanek. That organization is just awful. Yeah, but BC gives athletic scholarships, doesn't it? How much was that? Plus, one has to add the value of a BC degree. The $850,000 doesn't look so good now, does it?by Swampy - Hockey
Re: BARTON HALL - 16 years ago
Al DeFlorioDavid HardingIncidentally, Googling Blaine Aston I found a nice write-up of his teammate Greg Morris. Given that the piece was done as part of black history month, I'm surprised there was no mention of Cornell's center that year, Walt Esdaile. Walt was the second most sought-after recruit on the east coast as a high school senior, behind a guy named Alcindor. Esdaile figures promineby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: BARTON HALL - 16 years ago
Al DeFlorioCornellFanIn the "old days" of Barton Hall, how did Cornell set up the bleachers with respect to the indoor track? I am just curious how the stands were arranged in relation to the track. The track may be a different size and in a different location today than when Barton was used for basketball. The basketball court was wood, not synthetic back then. Re: Lacrosse Polls 3/31 - 16 years ago
Josh '99 I'm not sure how Syracuse deserves to be #1 but I suppose someone has to be. They've beaten Army (by 1 goal), Georgetown (by 1 goal), JHU (by 1 goal away),and Loyola (maybe not as strong as the others, but a Maryland team, which counts extra). Re: How far Cornell hasn't fallen this year - 16 years ago
TrotskySwampyI'd be curious to compare opponents' SOG over the past 2 years with, say, 2003. I sense a TBRW table. 2008 is the first season for the records I have in which Cornell has been outshot. The 27.9 shots allowed per game is way over the norm of recent Schafer teams. The shots per game for the team (26.6) is also below the recent trend, but more in line with the early 00's teamsby Swampy - Hockey
Re: How far Cornell hasn't fallen this year - 16 years ago
metaezraredhair34Feel better? Not until our defense starts playing better. How many third period leads did we give up this year? How many third period leads did we give up in the previous seven seasons? Yeah, the difference between last night's results and results from playoff games the years we were going deep in the NCAAs isn't that the opposing goalie stood on his head. Re: Soccer Chant - 16 years ago
imafrshmnThe soccer chant style song is EXACTLY what we need at games. We'll try to make it happen on Sunday against Clarkson, and hopefully some people will have read this and know what it's all about. As for the chant itself, it's catchy and simple enough to get going.
