Re: Opponents and Others, 2022-23 - 1 year ago
osorojo A "tradition of excellence" sounds good, but how do these schools - many of them small and neither wealthy nor large, MAINTAIN this "tradition of excellence" in the face of other schools with many more students, much more money, and better facilities? Is there something unique about college hockey which enables teams from relatively small, relatively unknown colleges/uby Swampy - Hockey

redice osorojo With a few spectacular exceptions (eg: K.Dryden) college hockey players do not dominate the cream of professional hockey players - as athletes do in most other sports. How come? Even the great Ken Dryden did some time in the minors before emerging as an NHL star. IIRC, Dryden finished the season, spent a few weeks at Montreal's AHL team, and then was called up for the first Staby Swampy - Hockey

billhoward Trotsky Everyone who grew up on Long Island in the 70s had six guys in their high school who were exactly like Seinfeld, except they were funny. That show is more ridiculously overhyped than the Beatles. And Christy Brinkley flagged down Billy Joel. It showed geeky guys from the Island could meet and marry famous models. billhoward Sorry, "turf"? Pre-millennial, that meant grass. Now, if you're younger, I believe turf means "articial turf." Sort of a retronym thing. (As in, now you have to say "corded drill" to be clear.) William Safire, he of the NYT On Language column, did one on on retronyms -- corded phone, cloth diaper and, because he was a gentlemanly conservative but a conservby Swampy - Other Sports

billhoward scoop85The coaches have to rope in Ragland on those wild 3’s. It’s nice the kid is fearless, but he needs to show a bit better judgment. Good insights. Also: You just defined college student. See the article about Cornell in today’s New York Times.by Swampy - Other Sports

Al DeFlorioh Goalie great Bob Rule passed away: A heartbreaking shame. I first met him a few years ago at an alumni event. I told him how I picked up my knowledge of lacrosse mostly by keeping the bench warm while playing club lacrosse in graduate school, and he smiled and said, I know what that’s like.” We both laughed because I thought I knew his history. Iceberg 1-1 tie to Yale earlier with Penn beating Columbia. I guess Cornell would have to beat said Columbia team next week and hope Penn loses at Princeton to win the league? Seems unlikely. I wasn’t impressed by Princeton. But then, they could always park the bus and pull something out.by Swampy - Other Sports

Swampy dag14 A very strange game. Clarkson dominates most of our 5-minute major, only giving up a goal in the last 30 seconds: score 3-1. Then the wheels appear to fall off the bus and at the end of 2 it is 7-1. I hope Doug had them practice extended woman-down periods. Remember when the men were up (something like) 4 goals (IIRC) on Clarkson No need. Final score: 8-1 Cornell. Not bad forby Swampy - Hockey
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
mikers They need more than a few "blockers". Both lines are undersized, not strong enough and not talented enough to keep up with the other Ivy's except maybe Brown. Columbia has past them. The University needs to decide if they want to put more money to the program- fix up the stadium, get another opposite side of the field seating arrangement, hire a whole new coaching staff and recruby Swampy - Other Sports

billhoward First quarter and also third quarter (so-far), Cornell and Penn had 7 points each, plus Penn had 2 unanswered TDs in the second quarter. Down 28-14 with 2 minutes to play in third (and despite having a Cornell D interception nullified by an offsides), 28-14 may be too much to make up, but it's not an embarrassment. Would that this would be the lowest level of performance that the admby Swampy - Other Sports

BearLover Looking at last night’s box score, it appears Colgate was up 2-0 and then, about halfway through the second period, Colgate began taking a string of penalties for the next 20 minutes, including a 5-minute major for hitting from behind (Q scored during the major), a holding and hooking penalty within 23 seconds of each other (Q scored on the 5x3), and a slashing call midway through the tby Swampy - Hockey

billhoward Another tough week Saturday against unbeaten Penn (unbeaten until last week against Brown), which plays Cornell at home Saturday at 1 pm. Odds are this evens Cornell's record at 4-4 with lesser lights Dartmouth (home) and Columbia (NYC) closing the season. Penn also needed OT to beat Dartmouth. Dafatone upprdeck so many unknowns. I do know that at work about 10 people have gotten sick in the last 2-3 months and everyone of them said it kicked their butts. I did always wonder why Cornell cases didnt match the Tompkins county cases.. Many days Cornell had more than the county ever recorded. billhoward Nice game versus Princeton. Hobey Baker rink (capacity 2,000) is better suited to games that draw in the hundreds of fans. Attendance listed at 542. Cornell freshman McKenna Van Gelder got goals one and two, the second (GWG) was a nice wrist shot that found the unprotected upper right corner. I thought Cornell played quite well but maybe not yet well enough to be a final four conteby Swampy - Hockey

abmarks George64 ugartethere is definitely NIL in the Ivies; Yianni is definitely getting NIL money. As is Jameson Wang, according to Brown announcers. Great article. Thanks. It's one that shows how NIL can have a silver lining -- it's not just about money-grubbing. ugarte dbilmes While we are waiting for our season to get started, UConn is already 6-0-1 and is just now getting the services of a highly-touted freshman who was a third-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils. and not patsies either. Ohio State went to Storrs and UConn went 1-0-1 with a scoreless draw and a 6-1 drubbing. Then they beat BU in OT on the road. Gee! Do you think Mike may have kby Swampy - Hockey

Trotsky TBRW Predictions. The transfer portal likely means I have miscalculated returning points, and I'll have to revise a few times as I find errors, but... that's my story so far. This is very entertaining. But may I suggest you present the errors with "+" or "-" (ERROR = PREDICTED - ACTUAL)? For example, in 2022 you predicted 2, but the actual was 4, so the errorby Swampy - Hockey

I propose that until we get a coach who establishes a winning tradition, we don't hire any more alumni as HC. Recent history (at least the past 40 years) has been a progression to doormat status. We need a coach who knows how to pick a program up from the floor.by Swampy - Other Sports

I'm not an Andy Noel fan. But, IIRC, in 2019-2020, Cornell was #1 in M & W hockey, and men's lacrosse was ranked #2 (behind Syracuse, which had played a weaker schedule). Imagine COVID did not ended prematurely end the season, and we went on to win NC's in all 3 sports. Would anyone seriously criticize AN or MP for their poor handling of athletics? marty osorojo I take it suggesting any connection between coaching and winning is out-of-bounds? I have watched several coaches win numerous games for their teams - Harkness not the least of which.
