Re: Cornell vs UMass at Lake Placid -- 12/29 4 pm - 2 months ago
Trotsky I'm not actually sure when Cornell becomes "Ivy" in spirit. By the letter, it's not until 1954 that anyone is officially Ivy. But in spirit, we were the poor bastard public stepchild compared to the other snoots. Well, to be fair Yale was the Connecticut state "land-grant" college until 1893, Brown was Rhode Island's state "land-grant" until 1894. Dartmoutby Swampy - Hockey
Re: Dan Swanstrom new Cornell head football coach - 3 months ago
Local Motion I think Dan Swanstrom is an awesome hire and this guy has won everywhere he has coached. Like I have said many times, he may be a great hire and we are lucky to have Swanstrom on the East Hill, but the Cornell admin has to be willing to support the football program or he will be another 3 and out. One of the highlights of this hire is Dan Swanstrom was the head coach at Divisionby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Hockey Coverage - 3 months ago
I would add one thing to what others have said. I streamed last weekend's BU game and found the announcers to be strong BU homers, which I would normally expect. Nonetheless, they provided insights into each team's strategy like I have never heard before. For example, they said Cornell defense appeared to be using man-to-man coverage. I've never heard such analysis before in any broadcast hocby Swampy - Hockey

Dafatone ugarte Trotsky ugarteI am still annoyed at their terror at any forecheck and we have ONE player on the team who likes - actually likes - to shoot the puck (Bancroft) and every time he's on the wing with space, whoever is passing it to him handcuffs him so he can't one-time it. Morgan Barron would have killed someone by now. I agree with this generally, but Penny and Walsh also like toby Swampy - Hockey

upprdeck A good thing we beat Minn Dul/BC and have Ariz St and UMass on the schedule so we a chance out of OC wins. Super big weekend to get things back turned around. Imagine! Beating BU and BC in a single weekend. FYP!by Swampy - Hockey
Re: CU-BU 2023 - 4 months ago
billhoward JohnF81 It was a great crowd and atmosphere at MSG. 15,289 was an excellent turnout. St. John's basketball drew 14,188 when they played Michigan at MSG two weeks ago. Great comments by Mike in the postgame on alumni support. 15,289/18,006 MSG hockey seating = 85% full Saturday night. I thought it felt much fuller than that, but I cannot fathom an arena ever undercounting. Might be itby Swampy - Hockey

BearLover Trotsky BearLover I’m very happy Cornell won last night and I had a great time at the game. But the performance did not inspire confidence for the rest of the year. Looking at the chances Cornell gave up, BU easily could have had four or five goals. Even though Cornell did finally score on the PP, it came when a puck popped out to Walsh from the half-wall, rather than set up by a passinby Swampy - Hockey

BearLover marty So does Hockey East have additional time outs during the regular season broadcasts or were these effing Fan Cam Can Cans designed to encourage folks to buy $15 beers? I wasn't listening to WHCU. Did they run commercials during the extra down time? I was wondering why there were so many timeouts. It didn’t make sense given the game wasn’t televised. Chris H82 Swampy Ken711 CAS How bout George Santos to the Lions? . Nice one. He actually was the Offensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2015 - 2017. And he won't be interested in the opening at Columbia, as he's already coached them to an Ivy League title. While he was on the faculty of Columbia's physics department.by Swampy - Other Sports

Ken711 Trotsky Assuming Archer is gone, is there any reason to think a new regime will be any better? Can Cornell do anything to be competitive in football, or are we Brown hockey? It starts with hiring the head coach, one that surrounds himself with a competent assistant staff. A head coach that has a proven background of winning. Simple answer yes. Good points. CAS Cornell is a 1.5 point favorite at home vs Columbia, who are 0-6 in Ivy play. Columbia has been a perennial doormat in the league, and we've joined them. But I thought a few years ago Columbia brought in a sports consultant who came up with a plan to elevate Columbia football. For a while it seemed to be working. Re: Cornell football coach - 4 months ago
BearLover Some of the stuff in this thread is crazy. People aren’t paying $100 to attend Harvard-Yale except maybe some crazy rich people who want to pay for some sort of VIP package. It needs to be stated that almost no one attends games at even the successful Ivy programs—they have very few fans in general and the students don’t care at all. arugula I also watch a ton of NHL and too often forget the yawning gap in skill level between the NHL and the NCAA. So the idea of back door passes, screens, and basketball style cutting is likely too much to ask. My complaint was that the players, at least a lot of them, seem to think they can do those things. billhoward Martha Pollock like predecessor president David Skorton seem neutral on sports. Don't want to expand it, don't want to kill it. That kind of leaves the Teagle pool replacement in limbo. Re: Cornell football 2023 - a team we could beat - 4 months ago
billhoward We already had to wade through as many Fire-Archer messages as comments about the games themselves. I just created a separate thread about Archer's history at Cornell and how he stacks up against past Cornell coaches as well as against other Ivy coaches with at least 5 years of Ivy coaching experience. If we go by such past experience, he's liable to get fired and then go on to win aby Swampy - Other Sports

Local Motion The Ivy League is a sports conference and not an academic affiliation. If Cornell wants to remain an Ivy League affiliate at the very least our stadium and other athletic facilities should be at Ivy League standards. Trotsky Same same on parking and New Haven pizza. For seating, Yale's so bad now it may be like the 90s when you could just walk around and plant yourself anywhere in the rink. Beautiful rink with atrocious facilities. The Yale crowd is divided evenly between (1) students, (2) 8-year olds, and (3) 80-year olds. I'm planning to attend the game at Yale and have some questions: Where are the best seats for visitors? The Yale website offers parking, apparently for an extra fee. TimV Trotsky Al DeFlorioThat looks exactly on beam.Depends whose "day" you mean by "our day." In the early 60s it was a $25 CUAA coupon book that got a student into every sports event. mike1960 This is a fantastic schedule! We've got Denver and Ohio State. Also, Syracuse and Notre Dame. (Can't wait to beat Syracuse.) But Denver, Penn State, and ND not on television??
