Re: Re-Sign or Resign - 8 years ago
CAS If Andy gave an extension to a basketball coach who has won 1/3 of his games during his 5-yr tenure, do you really believe Mike won't be back? Btw Mike's 20-year record at Cornell is 375-222-77. Richie Moran's career coaching record is even more lopsided at 257-121, with a period of practically uncontested dominance in the 70's. There's no question, however, that it was time for him to go byby Kyle Rose - Hockey

RichH Sports marketers can stop calling every team's fans a "Nation" any day now, thanks. +1. FWIW, having unfortunately witnessed first-hand the Red Sox' ascent to baseball's upper-eschelon over the past decade and a half, long-time Sox fans hate the pink hat-wearing, band wagon-riding, Red Sox Nation crap. I smile inside whenever I hear one of them bitch about it. I, for one, loby Kyle Rose - Hockey

RichH This is fine, but now I'm just more upset over the decision to give the entire Duke Lacrosse team a 5th year. How does the outcome in this case inform that one?by Kyle Rose - Hockey

CU77Are you (or were you) on a Cornell varsity team that had anywhere close to the accomplishments of this year's lax team?? I didn't think so. This is an instance of the dumbest class of fallacies in sports fandom.by Kyle Rose - Other Sports

George64 Quotes from Cornell's Charter Day Presidential panel as reported in the Ithaca Voice. Can someone explain the second one to me? It went over my head. (Is "celeb asst" short for "celebrity assistants"? Fuck Twitter.)by Kyle Rose - Hockey

RichH BearLover And y'all can think whatever you want, Ugh. I hate the word "y'all" and it's explosion in educated social media circles. Stop with the folksy. Yeah, BearLover: it's "all y'all". Get it right.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
TrotskyThe line was the first Cornell hockey experience for freshmen, and it set the tone that this was an identifying experience. Plus it was fun and led to a tremendous amount of drinking and casual sex. Students today are denied that experience (and even granting that students today seem incredibly boring and unimaginative, I assume they'd still perk up for that). LOL at the idea that studenby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
Trotsky Kyle RoseBut this worship of mediocre spaces is just dumb. The worship of mediocre spaces is what explains the aesthetic appeal of almost everything old. Fenway is a dump, and it was a dump in 1980 and 1960 and 1940. But the aging of a dump gives it charm, as long as it isn't in Uniondale. Hell, even Shea felt wonderful at the end. The prosecution rests. I admit that what I want is noby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
CUontheslopesTo whomever said that "new rinks are like office buildings" is a garbage generalization, simply put - you're wrong. Ok, bud: killer argument there. In all seriousness, I'm not actually advocating for Lynah to be torn down: if you were paying attention, you know I was also the person who said that Lynah is not Cornell hockey's problem. Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
KeithK... and fenway are the best places in MLB to watch a ballgame precisely because of the old school "features" (drawbacks to some). Yeah, Fenway is awesome if you like looking at support posts and craning your head 70 degrees to the left to see the infield if you didn't pay a ton for your seats. Fenway is a dump designed by someone whose primary goals clearly weren't comfort or sby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
The team is boring to watch, frustrating, unexciting and unimaginative. For the first time since the 70's, I'm not going to MSG for a Cornell game scheduled there. Fix THAT stuff and I'd stand the whole game - on glass shards and hot coals - and still be a happy guy. <2005>QFT.</2005>by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
Trotsky upprdeckare we going to live in Lynah forever? Why not? In all seriousness, the three most interesting rinks in the ECAC are, IINM, the three oldest: Lynah, Hobey, and Appleton. Really? My vote is for the Whale. In all seriousness, Ingalls is probably the most fascinating, beautiful, and functional sports arena I've ever been in, period. Lynah is great because of what happened there, andby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Time for a New Arena thread - 9 years ago
upprdeck i hear that. but then i know they are losing kids because of the facilities. they are losing attendance because of the facilities, and they are losing income because of the facilities. if they keep losing will they have a tradition at all? The condition of Lynah is not directly the reason fans are not showing up like they used to: there are lots of more likely reasons for that, one of wby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Dafatone Kyle Rose Jim Hyla RichH All I can say at this point is that it's a shame that jtwcornell91 doesn't check in here more often. Because this thread. Because this thread needs him(?). "Because noun". Language evolution. Eh. It's just a dropped/implied "of". It's a language shift, sure, but it's not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. Jim Hyla billhoward Jim Hyla Huge number of fans. From multiple schools? Do you mean the 8500 seats are more full than empty? I would love for LP to be a sellout every year. We are not going back to Boston Garden and the 1970s-early '80s; LP seems more of a hockey town than Albany. No I should have put some sarcasm in there. At least the side away from the cameras looked empty. No bands eitherby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: huge LAX game @ Virginia today - 9 years ago
scoop85 I like basketball enough, but it's preposterous for any sport to take 20+ minutes of real time to play the last 2-3 minutes of the game; waiting for that HS hoops game to end was excrutiating. Something's got to be done to reduce time outs and improve the flow of basketball at all levels. You could fix this by implementing one change: allow teams to decline penalties/fouls. All of that BSby Kyle Rose - Other Sports

Re: 2015-16 - 9 years ago
BearLoverThe point remains that Yale is still doing much better than us and that we never were able to solve the Yale teams of 2008-2011. Couldn't have said it better myself. Pretty much all it takes to beat Cornell is to play that style, because the coaching staff has no clue how to neutralize it.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Shoul He Go Part 2 - 9 years ago
BearLover Topher may have been a skilled offensive player, but having a 5'4 guy instruct 6'5 guys hasn't worked so well. Is his height really the issue? I'd think the bigger issue is that he was coached by Schafer for four years, hardly a recipe for radical new ideas.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Shoul He Go Part 2 - 9 years ago
BearLover Dafatone Now we're getting into a sort of semantic argument about the definition of greatness. Yale may have been better, but that's (in my opinion) not much of a reflection on our own quality, since Yale had a pretty solid team in their own right at that time. It's not the fact that Yale was better, though--we simply could not compete with them, at all. I don't think great teams shouby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Shoul He Go Part 2 - 9 years ago
KGR11 Although I don't think this team has done well enough in the past 4 years, I don't know if Schafer's replacement would be better. Casey Jones, as an alum, might be interested but Clarkson had a 39% winning percentage this season (4-year rolling average of 45%). Maybe Topher will be coach one day, but who knows how good of coach he'd be? Schafer may be the best option just because he's thby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Re: ECAC Prelims - 9 years ago
Juggernaut To pile on: Cornell was originally the first choice of a quality player who chose another ECAC school. He lost interest in Cornell when, during his visit, he said Shafer was "too proud of himself" - and the player didn't want to be associated with someone who thought himself to be "a legend". Care to provide the name of the recruit so someone can verify this story?by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: ECAC Prelims - 9 years ago
TrotskyIf he can turn things around (1) we'll all be extremely happy and (2) he'll have earned another free pass. If not, I'll join the group calling for change. At some point, you just have to accept that this may be another Richie Moran situation, with the coach's glory days two decades behind him when he finally passes the torch. Moran, like Schafer, had some success in his second (and thirby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: ECAC Prelims - 9 years ago
Dafatone Watching, no. Listening, yes. It's a bad end to a bad year. I just think we should keep things in perspective. This is the worst year we've had in what, 15 seasons or more? (I'm putting this one below almost knocking out Q a couple years ago). Plenty of teams have worse years. In fact, very few haven't. Let me be clear: losing by itself is not the issue. Dafatone ScrewBU ithacat It's all about skating and scoring. This system has been dead for years. Please bury it now. Yep. If this isn't rock bottom, what is? If this doesn't convince them that their joke of a system doesn't work, what will? Finishing dead last with the "#1 defense in the country?" Coach wants to know why students only show up for the Harvard game? Why WOULDby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: ECAC Prelims - 9 years ago
Clearly, something has to change. A system built from the net outward cannot give up five unanswered goals in two periods and be anything other than a joke.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
