Re: Recruiting wars - 18 years ago
My senior year roommate was an ORIE. He said it stood for one of two things: - Outdoor Recreation and Imaginary Engineering - Oh Really? It's Easy.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: Recruiting wars - 18 years ago
I remember one engineer during my four years, but I'd have to dig out some programs to remember who. I also don't remember to many hotelies. That was a more common major on the football team, not the hockey team. Usually the hockey players were Ag. Ec. majors, which basically was the only undergraduate business major at the time.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Roy, Appealing to the greater good doesn't work in this country. Why else do we have SUVs all over the place increasing hydrocarbon and CO2 emissions while the country is going to war over oil? And nobody in elected office who isn't already in the pocket of corporate America has the financial wherewithal to do anything but cave in to the lobbyists. Re: Optimism (NHL) - 18 years ago
Except that the NCAA already plays with many of the "proposed" rules that the NHL is thinking of adopting, and Cornell's style of play is just as appropriate as Minnesota's. In the short run, I think you may see a shift toward more open play, but in the long run, I don't think you'll see a net change unless they make other more radical changes, such as larger goals, more stick curvaturby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: Optimism (NHL) - 18 years ago
I saw Ed Snider, the Flyers' owner, interviewed on CSN last week. He basically said he's confident there'll be a season next year, simply because they're negotiating daily rather than sporadically. The owners basically told Bettman to "get it done." When pushed as to whether that season would start in October, his answer was "It better."by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Robb Wrote: When I graduated in '94, the engineering college's policy was that a GPA >= 3.25 was "with distinction," and everyone else was "with diploma." There was no strict percentage on it. Of course, given that most classes were curved to a B- or so, you could probably estimate that the percentage of "with distinction" grads would be in the 15-20% range.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: Curious quote from NYT - 18 years ago
One other way to look at it: by not being in the top 10 or top 5, you get more students applying who really want to go to Cornell for the right reasons rather than those who want to go there because it's in the top 10. Or is that simply rationalization?by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

I'm working on a re-vegetation project here in PA. If that article is correct about the stuff that's growing there 1) It's truly not woods, it's a brush-patch and 2) it's of limited value to wildlife, and certainly doesn't lead to the wildlife diversity that a place like Sapsucker Woods does. That said, I'd rather see greenery than another parking lot.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Well, I learned a lot in "Introduction to Wine and Spirits", a.k.a. Wednesday Afternoon Winetasting, that has actually been of use in my career. Got to admit that certain courses were a total waste (Econ 101 & 102, Urban Affairs Lab). Others were actually quite interesting (Psych 101, Modern American History). There was actually a 600 level ChemE course on Air Pollution I woby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: LAX: Cornell-Duke NCAA postmortem - 18 years ago
I was kind of disappointed in our offense. I'd been reading so much about Nee and Greenhalgh, and they really weren't nearly as dominant as I expected them to be. But as Senor Ugarte said, nothing to be ashamed of. One other thing. I went to the game with a friend of mine (unfortunately a Duke fan). I think the basket in the stick was too deep. What I didn't understand was why the stick penalty in the case of Maryland was 3 minute non-releasable, while the Duke stick penalty was 1 minute releasable. My impression of our game. Duke is FAST! We had to play the control game, but had real problems on the clear, which caught up to us in the third. Plus Duke's goalie had a real fast stick aby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [OT] NCAA Revisits Native American Team Nicknames - 18 years ago
You're misrepresenting what I said. I didn't say that because the Irish are not an oppressed minority they can't be offended. I said that because they are no longer an oppressed minority, the majority of them do not feel offended because there's no "threat" in the nickname. And I'm with you completely on your second point. Racist is in the eyes of the offended, not the offender.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [OT] NCAA Revisits Native American Team Nicknames - 18 years ago
I can handle it if someone wants to address something that's clearly offensive to an oppressed minority or has racial overtones. Redskins screams of this. Indians or Braves less so, but I'll accept the need for the change. Celtics and Fighting Irish would have 70 years ago, except now that the Irish are not an oppressed minority, the names aren't really offensive and the issue goes away. Buby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
