Re: Cornell lacrosse 2024 - 5 days ago
BearLoverOne thing to note about the 2022 national championship game is that Cornell probably would have won if Donville hadn’t been forced to transfer (to Maryland). One thing to ponder about the 2024 Ivy League Tournament is if we hadn't lost Chayse Ierlan (HM All-America this year) as a grad transfer to Hopkins, we might have won the ILT and been in the NCAAs this year. And if last year we hadby billhoward - Other Sports

NCAA first round weekend of 5/11/24 Notes on the weekend: All 8 top seeds won. Closest were two Sunday games by margins of 3, Hopkins over Lehigh but game in doubt most of the way, Georgetown over Penn State, Towson led Syracuse 9-8 at the half and it wasn't until the third quarter there was more than a one-goal lead; in the last 20 minutes Towson imploded and/or Syracuse got lucky on every gby billhoward - Other Sports

Five finalists for the men's and women's Tewaaraton Trophy. A couple weeks ago there was discussion that Notre Dame's Pat Kavanagh and Cornell's seemed the front-runners. The list of finalists out May 9 has Kavanagh but not Kirst. Kirst had 45G, 22A, 67Pts in 14 games, or 4.8 ppg. He had a reasonable 4-3–7 in the season ending game at Dartmouth but only 0-1-1 in the Ivy tournament loss to Penby billhoward - Other Sports
Re: President Pollack resigning - 7 days ago
Jeff Lehman was of my era – seventies grad – and he was of the right age, 46 when he took office in 2003, if you were looking for perfect twenty-year president. And he was a Cornellian. But Lehman's vision for Cornell, some thought, was a bit too ethereal to some segments of the Cornell community. There was the pragmatic issue of how-the-heck-do-we-fundraise off visions such as "Wisdom in tby billhoward - Other Sports

RichH billhoward We still have the Ivies' best homecoming fireworks. Friday 9/27 before the Yale game. Maybe I'll stream The Miracle Worker to get in a positive mood. Sorry, but I just don't understand the fireworks show. I've gone to a lot of homecoming weekends, and I've never had a desire to go to that. TrotskyIt's the Ivies. None of us have had a decent football team since the 60s. Pretty spot on. Dartmouth went 9-0 in 1970, won the Lambert Trophy as the best football team (any size) in the Northeast, and was ranked 14th in the final AP poll. As of the 1982 season, the Ivies were relegated to Division I-AA, now known as the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). There have been a numberby billhoward - Other Sports

Ken711There were "long-range" plans to add a weight room/locker room space with stands for the West Stands. Andy Noel referred to it a few years ago. However the focus and fund raising now is aimed at the Meinig Fieldhouse. Princeton does not seem to have a one-athletic-project-at-a-time mode. mike1960 That was a tough, tough loss at home. It was a fabulous evening in terms of the weather, if that's any consolation on Friday. I had the full monsoon suit ready for Sunday just in case. If only: * We got the last goal versus Notre Dame out in Bethpage * We didn't let Penn get the OT goal in the RS * there isn't any one if-only that would have turned around the game versus Penn Stby billhoward - Other Sports

Local Motion By the way..............just to add some of the Penn players on Friday evening had to pee in the woods at halftime. Really????? Yeah, really. They understand it would be poor taste to pee on the Fieldturf. You've never played HS sports where you didn't get a little bit into the woods, enough to make you feel semi-invisible when you turn your back on the field and spectators? Re: Schoellkopf Field needs to be upgraded to Ivy standards. - 12 days ago
Schoellkopf Field fills only for graduation and for fireworks (Homecoming Friday, sometimes in summer). The rest of the time, 5,000 would do it for current Cornell football, maybe 10,000 for the Harvard or Princeton game if it determined the Ivy title. If you wish for X-many changes at Schoellkopf, you may get Cornell thinking about how cool it would be to move the entire facility to the Gameby billhoward - Other Sports

There are advantages to the new parent school accepting Wells orphans: The news schools get more students, they've got students who've made it through at least one year academically, they're grateful to be taken in, they understand New York State winter weather. New York State has suffered a net loss (~20%) of students the past decade if I'm reading this NYS chart correctly. Cornell is up, buby billhoward - John Spencer Is Dead

... that is, something the committee feels that doesn't track with RPI or WL or other hard stats. It's good that this is one check on criteria bound into the square box of The Ranking Rules. Heh! That actually makes sense: play the later game, take a little off the advantage of playing at home. Assuming the Ivy League made rational decisions. I was thinking they were thinking more people would turn out for a late game. Or they (ILT wizards) were thinking: More Cornell folk are local when it's in Ithaca, so the late game is no big deal getting home. Whereas the Yale and Princetonby billhoward - Other Sports

Good point, taking kids or grandkids < middle-school age to an 8:30 game. Conversely if your kid plays a youth / HS spring sport, odds are greater it was an afternoon game. Or will be a Saturday game and hopefully not in the morning. Assuming you're in the Syracuse-Ithaca-Rochester area, a reasonable ride home. BearLoverIf the committee doesn’t consider margin of victory, then there should be no committee at all. RPI does a way better job of determining who is most deserving than the committee ever could. The 2024 NCAA tournament bracket diagram shows one early-round bracket, sort of like the basketball play-in or (for a year before they were hooted down) the "first round" which then made it aby billhoward - Other Sports
