NCAA Tournament 2024 - 2 days ago
Since I don't want to have to dig through it in the "Opponents and Others" thread, I'm starting a thread for non-Cornell discussion of this year's NCAAs. I thought it was interesting that Michigan Tech is the #16 seed and looked back to see when else it's happened that #16 has not been from Atlantic Hockey, College Hockey America, or the MAAC. 2017 Michigan Tech (WCHA) 2021* Notby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

abmarks Trotsky jtwcornell91Now that they're doing the regionals on Thursday-Saturday and Friday-Sunday, couldn't one site bid to host both regionals? This is actually brilliant. Only downsides I can imagine would be finding enough practice facilities for 8 teams plus enough hotel blocks Good point. They used to do it with six teams (over two days) back in the 90s.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 4 days ago
Iceberg I find it crazy that the committee or whoever is responsible couldn't find another site in the midwestern US. There has to be a ton of better arenas willing to do this event at a tolerable cost. Now that they're doing the regionals on Thursday-Saturday and Friday-Sunday, couldn't one site bid to host both regionals? The Eastern sites are close enough that dedicated fans could commute bby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 I missed the first two periods of the famous "Providence Game" because I had a Chem 208 prelim. A bunch of us asked the prof to move it, but he refused. The TA's were also pissed they had to be there. FTR, I aced the exam. When RIT went to the Frozen Four, their semifinal happened to land during a prelim I had on the calendar for an afternoon class I was teachiby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

arugula RichH jtwcornell91 Jeff Hopkins '82 To give you an idea of how second class this tournament feels, there are no programs at the rink and not even a QR code to scan for one (like there was last year). They just didn't bother creating one. Also, there's a single tiny stand selling souvenirs. None of it has the name of the schools on it - all the souvenirs simply have the tournament logo.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

sah67 ER I’ve never heard it called Czechia. It sounds too much like Chechnya Arthur says it (correctly) at every home game when Ondrej is in the starting lineup. You'd think the TV crew could have realized the ch in Czechia is pronounced the same way as the ch in Czech.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Scersk '97 Jeff Hopkins '82 Scersk '97 Loved the moment deep in the third where our guys pinned it against the wall in the Dartmouth end for a good 45 seconds. Old time hockey. Except in the old days they would have whistled it dead after 15 seconds. Ehhh, depends on how old time we're talking. RichH imafrshmn Even though I love ECAC Hockey and would not want to change the conference (except maybe sending Q to HE), it's kind of bothersome how small-time this league looks in the postseason compared to HE and B1G. In football we have seen the B1G and SEC schools claiming that top tier for themselves and it seems like a similar thing is evolving in hockey. chimpfood Iceberg I'm baffled why Cashman pulled Black with about 4:30 to go in regulation. I understand it's do-or-die but that was excessively early with a one-goal deficitI thought it was a really smart move to attack the gassed fourth line when we didn’t have a timeout. I would argue it was successful too as they kept our guys out there for an eternity, just didn’t score. Yeah. even thoughby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

underskill dbilmes Nice job by Pierre McGuire calling Lynah one of the most difficult rinks to play in! Anyone know if Bob Morton is still alive? Bob Norton was alive five years ago when he received an award from the AHCA: I can't find an obit for him, so I assume he's still alive (but retired). andyw2100 On the road to Lake Placid with Kim. Wondering how others feel about rooting interest in the SLU vs. Quinnipiac game. Personally I'm rooting for SLU, because I think Cornell has a greater chance of beating them should we beat Dartmouth and make the finals. (And because Quinnipiac is high on my list of teams to dislike.) But I expect some here will be rooting for Quinnipiac, with the logby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

ursusminor Chris '03 jtwcornell91 billhoward St. Lawrence definitely helps attendance in Lake Placid. Clarkson a bit more. Clarkson 3700 students St. Lawrence 2200 students The best possible ECAC-in-Placid turnout would be Cornell, Clarkson, St. Lawrence and, um, pick one, maybe RPI. JasonN95 jtwcornell91 I miss UVM, who would probably be 4.5 on that list. I sometimes wonder how things would have been for UVM if it stayed. It doesn’t seem like the jump to Hockey East worked out for the program. They were 60 seconds from a national championshipin the Frozen Four in 2009. Chris '03 andyw2100 Dunc What the fuck. They kicked me out cuz for starting Garry glitter due to “swears”.. in my last Cornell hockey game… I’m literally crying….- That's ridiculous! I'm guessing the band didn't play it because they somehow thought Schafer didn't want them to? I really don't think that was his intention. Give My Regards Trotsky IIRC one of the two ties we got during The Troubles (0-10-2) would have been a win but the eejits cost us a penalty and Harvard scored the tying goal on powerplay. The one I can still remember was '95, the last one of that streak, when somebody heaved a fish onto the ice at the start of the second period. Jeff Hopkins '82 pmbblblaw Anyone know where the Cornell fan section will be at Lake Placid this year? Probably hasn't been assigned yet. Brianne Jenner '15 is on the roster for Canada in the upcoming IIHF Women's World Championship in Utica (only a 2 hour drive from Ithaca): Apparently, she also plays for Ottawa in the new Professional Women's Hockey League, which I just learned did not bother to choose nicknames or logos for its teams before starting play this season.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

billhoward jtwcornell91One time in my 30s I was nearly clotheslined by the bouncer at the Chapter House because it didn't occur to me that I would need to show my ID while strolling in the front door. There is a belief that some bars try to keep out people beyond their 20s, certainly their 30s, and they'll reject you for not having a license. Robb ugarte what a good feeling to come back to elynah to see that we didn't lose after having to turn it off (as opposed to turning it off in anger) down 2-0. obvs annoying that it hurts us in the pairwise but it's always fun to watch your guys come back for the tie than to blow a lead. we all contain multitudes. RichH imafrshmn an incredible moral victory, if that's possible in any sense And honestly, getting a chance at the winner with the last faceoff (after the tying goal) showed me something. That was pretty fantastic, not giving up on the three points, even if it didn't work.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
