Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 4 days ago
marty Scersk '97 TrotskyI didn't even last 3 minutes trying to be impartial. I hate BC. BC West vs. BC East as far as I’m concerned. Both teams’ fans suck and are reviled by their respective conferences. And what school doesn’t bring their own band to the FF?! A pox on both their houses. I missed the band trivia. Wasn't that a D. U. band? Edina High School, from Edina, MN. Beyond paby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Trotsky Scersk '97Both teams’ fans suck and are reviled by their respective conferences. You know who else's fans are hated in their conference? I've always liked Denver. For me the ideal F4 would be us, Denver, BU, and Wisco. Eh, I don't think we're hated overly much, for the same reasons I can't hate the Minnesota fans: there are just enough doomsayers and Eeyores that it keeps the fan basby Scersk '97 - Hockey

mike1960 11-7 ND at the half. If we can tighten up on defense, we can win this game. We've wasted a couple of great saves through bad clears. Sure, ND's good at riding, but we're throwing it away too often. I can see a path for a comeback.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports

Trotsky ugarte Trotsky A dominant PP QB, I guess. My kingdom for a Kaldis! (putting up numbers in the KHL, btw)I was thinking Malinski, but Kaldis, Mark McRae, and Dan Ratushny also came to mind. Robertson is somewhere in that Joakim Ryan / Doug Murray liminal world of aggressive defensemen who need somebody behind them holding down the blueline so they can be, measuredly, irresponsible. Trotsky DeSantis had an amazing second half. I also really appreciated Devlin, Penney, and Psenicka down the stretch. I think Psenicka was playing as well as he did in the first half of his freshman year when he looked like an unstoppable force of nature. We have guys who find the net, guys who can see the ice, and guys who can create chances. I'm not sure what the missing Chemical X is toby Scersk '97 - Hockey

dbilmes Jeff Hopkins '82 ER Great game but the piped on music is awful. Are we at a baseball stadium? Michigan has the best band. Where are they? Springfield was just as bad. Someone needs to tell these AHL rinks that we want to hear the band(s), not their piped in noise. It was terrible at Springfield, especially when Maine played Cornell and both teams had their pep bands there. Part of whatby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: TBRW Awards 2024 - 19 days ago
ugarte Trotsky I think there was confusion about the Gage Award, given all the Kempf nominations. It is given to a player who flies under the radar, receives few accolades, and/or plays a particular role well. Kempf is as some of you noted the primary stay at home D on a team built out from goal -- the opposite of a supporting player. My choices for Gage were Devlin and Stanley and honestlby Scersk '97 - Hockey

BearLover One thing about 2005 and 2006 is that, even though we had really good teams those years, we were outmatched in the quarterfinals against Minn/Wisco. (At least, that’s what the box scores say—I wasn’t following Cornell hockey yet.) How many times have we been in the NCAA quarters and played well enough that we deserved to win (or at least been 50/50)? At least since I’ve been a fan, forby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Beeeej ugarte "Can't we pull one damn upset" just doesn't rock my world the way "Clemsoning" became a synonym for choking until they finally won one. Yes, I want to win a championship but there have been two teams in my life that I thought were actually reasonably capable of it. One lost in the semifinals and one was taken away BY THE GLOBALISTS. scoop85 With no more games to focus on here’s a late season update for our listed recruits. We have plenty of talent in the pipeline: I have never seen us line up the talent at center that we seem to have and are bringing in. Natyshak: Mack -- he really took a step forward this year; could've been Penney; Suda, O'Leary were already there; still waiting on Psenicka MacFarlane: Castagna -- jeez... Gage: Kempf -- so solid now; one of our best stay-at-homes ever Shippel: Jack O'Leary -- I think he'll have competition from Devlin next year, who I notice doing the little things right every time he's on the ice Schafer:by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: NCAA QF - Denver - 19 days ago
BearLover I meant less our literal win% and more our expected number of frozen four appearances, given the number of quarterfinals appearances and our matchups (by seed) in the quarterfinals. So, we are now 1-11 in the quarters. I think it is definitely the case that we should be at least 4-8, and probably better than that. arugula Providence too Providence showed up a year early, and Yale showed up two years late. I don't want to bring up the specter of 2020, but that would've probably been our Yale-like echo of 2018 but playing a dominant hand. 2 in 27 years of tournaments. Re: NCAA QF - Denver - 19 days ago
BearLover Somebody just needs to do the math: What percentage of the time does a 2 beat a 1? What percentage of the time does a 3 beat a 1? Etc. Then, you can calculate Cornell’s expected win percentage in the NCAA quarterfinals over the years. That will show you how lucky or unlucky we’ve gotten (hint: extremely unlucky). Because it's a day off, I have no interest in doing the math, but tby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Beeeej abmarks taking our lumps 5-2 from UND in Grand Rapids can't be far off from that given the geography and the way UND travels. 6-2, but the point I came here to make is that UND had a bye since it was still a 12-team tournament, and we’d beaten Miami as an underdog the day before. UND were the #1 seed and eventual champion, so as much as I’d have liked to see us win (I made the trip to Gby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Was that slashing? - 20 days ago
The better question is about the trips and interferences that went uncalled. There should’ve been an even up on the second period penalty, and there could’ve been two or three other power plays for us in that game. DU had their hands all over us anywhere around the net because they were having trouble with our size. Either call it close or don’t, but don’t call a weak slash if you’re not calliby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA QF - Denver - 20 days ago
Look, the only year we really blew it was 2018. Sure, we’ve had other years in white jerseys in the regional final, but that was luck. (And bad luck.) We’ve had two #1 seeds since the 16-team tournament came into being. We made it once; potzed out the other time. I’m unhappy with the results, but, other than 2018, I’m happy just to be in the position at all. Union won it when they were a #1 sby Scersk '97 - Hockey

ugarte We do have Fernandez (Top 15-20 at 149), Shapiro (3d place at 157), Ramirez (3x one match short of AA at 165) and Foca (3d place in 2023 at 174, just short at 184) returning. We have some talented freshmen coming in, particularly Simon Ruiz at 174, but the real reinforcements come for the 25-26 season. Neat. ugarteScersk '97Nobody can convince me that basketball exists. You missed a fun season! I know, I know. But we don't have the resources to compete in Moneyball, whether the pigskin version or squeakball version. For the latter, it saps all the life from it for me; for the former, at least the Ivies very early on separated from the rest and did their own thing. ugarte Everything coming up Cornell today! Not only does Vito beat Fix and the NCAA officiating crew, but Henson takes out Gomez at 149, so Cornell finishes in 2nd place! Fantastic! I must admit that I don't follow very closely. Are we a deep team or a young team? Any chinks in the armor of the Penn State juggernaut? George64 mountainred Over on the basketball-u board, a Princeton poster asserted that the W&M hoops budget is twice that of Cornell's (2mil+ v. 1mil+). So, Brian probably got a nice raise and access to more resources and is in charge of the clear #1 winter sport there. Until Ned arrived, basketball was the premier winter sport. That’s no longer true, and probably won’t be again. Noby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

adamw For the record, I support LP for the ECAC Tournament - even though getting to Albany, and especially Atlantic City (or MSG/Barclays/Pru) were FAR easier for me to get to personally. AC was a 1-hour drive from where I used to live, and LP is 6 hours, often on bad conditions on Rte. 30. But I don't care - I always gladly made that drive. Jeff Hopkins '82 Scersk '97 Loved the moment deep in the third where our guys pinned it against the wall in the Dartmouth end for a good 45 seconds. Old time hockey. Except in the old days they would have whistled it dead after 15 seconds. Ehhh, depends on how old time we're talking.
