Re: hockey at USC? - 17 years ago
It's club hockey...I play for the UCLA team, and USC has a reputation around our league for being a classless team. (Admittedly, there may be some bias there, but I know other teams have complained in the past, too.) It is kind of a funny incident and I'm sure it would have been hilarious to be there in person, but excuse me while I get a little righteous... Our conference, the PAC-8, and theby cornelldavy - Hockey

Apparently Doug's not too happy about his player rating in NHL 2K7: Thornton had some of his teammates over recently for a little tournament at NHL 2K7 for the 360, and since he's on the cover, some of the guys have even begun appealing their ratings to him personally. I heard "RED!" also. Kent Manderville played in Hartford and then three seasons with the 'Canes (the only Cornellian to play there, I believe), so there's your Cornell connection. Then again, he played in Edmonton, too, but I didn't hear them shout "RED!"by cornelldavy - Hockey

jmh30I may be in the minority here, but I think Chanda Gunn is kinda cute. On a more serious note, the fact that she fought through epilepsy to become a world-class goalie is one of the more impressive sports stories I've heard in the past few years. I'll pass that along...her brother plays for UCLA. By the way, she kept a diary of her Olympic experience for www.usahockey.com , and she closby cornelldavy - John Spencer Is Dead

Jacob '06Do you know how good cal techs team is? There is a good chance i'll be going there next year and I wanna play hockey in some manner, but I'm figuring having only been playing for a year I won't be able to make the club team. Have you seen them play? I don't know that they have a team; I've never heard of it if they do. Not a Cornell alum, but Brett Nowak, who played at Harvard, is retiring from the AHL at age 24 following surgery for testicular cancer. Hopefully he maintains a clean bill of health now. It's always a shame to see someone's athletic career end when it's not on their terms.by cornelldavy - Hockey
Shameless plug - UCLA hockey this weekend - 18 years ago
I know there's at least a handful of people here who live near LA, so I'll throw this out there. For those of you who want to see college hockey in Southern California, the UCLA and USC club teams wrap up their seasons this weekend in games 4 and 5 of their annual Crosstown Cup series. UCLA currently leads the series 2-1. If the last few games between the teams are any indication, it will be aby cornelldavy - John Spencer Is Dead

McKee: the solution to USA hockey's problems? - 18 years ago
Well, no, not really. But Off Wing Opinion, a pretty good sports/hockey blog, takes a look at some of the criticism of USA hockey following its disappointing Olympic performance, and it references McKee as the exception to the rule that all U.S. players come from the "M" states. Looks like he's saying the solution to Team USA's problems is to produce more David McKees (so to speak).by cornelldavy - Hockey

Re: KEEP IT RED - 18 years ago
KeithKEvery fan should feel they have the right to pillory any so-called Lynah Faithful who show up wearing the clothing that matches the colors of the opposing team though. Actually, an obligation. UCLA fans do this if they catch someone in the student section wearing red - USC's color - regardless of who the opponent is that day. WillKeithKMust we assist the idiocy of corporate names by repeating the branding here? Actually, as I recall, the team is called "PlanetUSA" because they play against the Canadian team (i.e., a team composed purely of Canadian-born players). PlanetUSA, by contrast, is composed of players from anywhere but Canada, though it is chiefly Americans on the roster. There were extenuatingby cornelldavy - Hockey

Re: [OT-well duh] Michigan - Nebraska football game - 18 years ago
I saw the play, which was ridiculous - straight out of a backyard game. Even photographers were in the middle of the field by the time the play ended. But I think Michigan has a right to be pissed - they can argue that Nebraska had too many men on the field, which would be a defensive penalty, which would give them one more play.by cornelldavy - Other Sports
Re: The Game 20th Anniversary Edition - 18 years ago
ESPN.com released a list of suggested gifts for hockey fans, and first on the list is "The Game." Considered a bible by most hockey fans, Hall of Fame goaltender Ken Dryden clearly defines what makes the sport great in this book. He also takes you into the player's head more than any other hockey book we've read. If you know someone who loves hockey or is just starting to get into it,by cornelldavy - Hockey

Has anyone seen this video from the mid-'80s Calgary Flames? It's like an awful hockey version of the Super Bowl Shuffle. If Nieuwendyk makes an appearance, I missed it (probably because I was laughing too hard), but Brett Hull's in there, and I know they were with the Flames at the same time.by cornelldavy - Hockey

Here's my PSA about nameplates again: When you go get a nameplate for your jersey, make sure they use the proper sans serif font. Bring a picture of your player with his back to the camera if you have to.by cornelldavy - Hockey
Re: OT -- Fans on the field - 18 years ago
Since a fan running on the field is a trespasser (I assume he would be considered one, since there are all kinds of warnings both on the ticket and over PA systems), I don't think a security guard could be held liable or found guilty for assault/battery as long as he didn't use an unreasonable amount of force to get the fan off the field. Maybe if the fan gets tackled and then security gives himby cornelldavy - Hockey
