Re: Wrestling 2022-23 - 1 year ago
mountainred nshapiro ugarte I also have my eye on Berreyesa wrestling for Nickerson at Northern Colorado in the Big 12 tournament and really hope he makes it. The conference is deep but they have 6 bids and though he's not seeded, I can definitely see him getting there - he was 23 in the last coaches poll. I've had the opportunity to talk to him a little and he's a great kid and I know he's stillby klehner - Other Sports

dbilmes The wrestling team's success often seems like it's taken for granted, but it's an incredible feat to have such a dominant program at an Ivy school (unless you're talking about an elitist sport like squash or fencing). Cornell has won 19 of the last 20 Ivy titles and is consistently ranked in the national polls, not to mention some of the amazing individual wrestlers who have competed forby klehner - Other Sports

ugarte If you feel like waking up at 4:30 eastern, Moomey's weight class kicks off at U23 tomorrow morning live at flowrestling.com Moomey down 5-0 gets the feet-to-back for 4, a penalty point and a TD to win 7-5 and move to the 1/4s. He wrestled at around 7am ET.by klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2022-23 - 1 year ago
Cornell commits Mason Gibson and Michael Dellagatta are competing in Super 32 this weekend. It's one of the toughest HS tournaments. Vito and Jacob Cardenas are competing next week in the World U23 championships in Freestyle, and Phil Moomey is in GR. Moomey is not on the Cornell roster at the moment, although he was listed at 133 in Mike Grey's recent email. Taking the semester off?by klehner - Other Sports

It's about that time! Incoming freshman Vince Cornella won the U20 Pan Am tournament at 65kg. He'll also be representing the US at the World U20 Championships in August in Bulgaria. He's looking to be the starter at 141 this coming year. 125: Greg D/Ungar/Lajoie 133: Arujau 141: Cornella/Saunders 149: Yianni 157: Yapoujian 165: Ramirez/Gibson (the best backup around, unlessby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 21-22 - 1 year ago
ugarte Learned today that by finishing second at Senior nationals, if Vito wants to take the U23 spot, he can. The broadcasters were assuming he would. In the actual tournament, Jacob Cardenas won at 92kg, but may have his U23 spot taken (the same way Vito can take it) if Isaac Trumble wins his True Third* match at Final X on Wednesday. Our other medalists: 57kg: Greg Diakomihalis - 3rdby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 21-22 - 1 year ago
Cornell recruit Vince Cornella (where else would he go?) won the U20 US Open at 65kg, beating many higher-ranked guys along the way. Greg D. took fourth in the Senior Men's 57kg class; a great showing. Next year: Greg D, Vito, Vince, Yianni, Colton, Ramirez, Foca, Loew, Cardenas, Fernandesby klehner - Other Sports

blackwidow Jonathon Fagen transferred to ASU. What gives? He has nowhere to go on Cornell's team (Darmstadt, Loew, Cardenas all ahead of him). Maybe he's anti-vaxx as well?by klehner - Other Sports

ugarte New season, new thread. No preview yet but new HC Mike Grey announced that the first dual meet of the season will be at Stanford against his mentor and Cornell's last coach, Rob Koll. At Cornell to open the new Friedman Arena (built by Koll). Classy move.by klehner - Other Sports

cu155 scoop85 marty upprdeck tons of people who had the flu shot at work complained after xmas break of something they couldnt shake. I'm with Jim on this as my boss and I were sick in January. I did 4 straight days in bed in order to recover. I have no idea if it might have been C19 and thus want to be tested. upprdeck Yianni was on channel 3 news tonight in an interview and said he would not be in the large group that would take a 2nd yr off to train.. he will be at cornell, try to win the NCAA, then go to trials. Also mentioned he doesnt want to be seen only as a guy who counters and wants to be the guy who can attack for 6 min and put fear in the other guy.. Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
David Harding This belongs in a 2020-2021 thread, but I'm not going to take responsibility for starting that one. The postponement of the summer Olympics by a year brings heartache those who have devoted a year to training. What does it mean for Cornell as a team next year? Yianni gave no indication in a post-Olympic-postponement interview on Flo that he would not wrestle for Cornell nextby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
Zain Retherford got pinned at the Pan Am Qualification tournament, and failed to qualify the US at 65kg for the Olympics. The US would have to qualify someone at the Last Chance Qualifying tournament (in Bulgaria or something?) for anyone to represent the US at 65kg; this tournament, if it is even held due to the coronavirus, would be very hard to qualify. I'm sure Yianni is so grateful...by klehner - Other Sports

cu155 Ugarte, I need you to talk me down from the stupidity I'm witnessing in the various TheMat Covid-19 threads! That place has a serious need for triage: let those who are terminally stupid just die. On a wrestling-related subject, if the NCAA grants a year or semester eligibility to those winter sports athletes affected by this shutdown, what would the Ivy League do for seniors like Tuckeby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
ugarte FYI, NCAA brackets come out on Wednesday so we'll see if Loew (i think a good chance) and Womack (I don't think he'll be eligible) get at-large bids. Appears that the at-large bids come out on Tuesday at 3pm, and the brackets on Wednesday. Lots of confusion on that all around.by klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
ugarte scoop85 Nice to see such a strong performance. Tucker is up to 30-0, but in so many of those matches his margin for error was so thin. Ugarte, what’s his realistic outlook in the NCAA’s? He's so good but he's also 5'3" which is very short even by the standards of guys wrestling at 133. He's a brick wall and his defense is amazing and he's quick enough to score on most mortals but hisby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
ugarte Today was the National Collegiate Open - a pre-conference-tournament tournament for redshirts, greyshirts and backups. For what it's worth, we sent three of our top incoming freshmen (165 Ramirez; 174 Foca and 197 Cardenas) and Max Dean (still at 184) and all of them won. I don't really know how good the field was but none of them even had a close match. Dean hasn't missed a beat - 4 pinsby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
mountainred klehner We still don't know much about Womack's condition. In addition, I still find it very strange that Berreyesa gave up his ORS just so he could do a few duals: I guess he might have been insurance in case Womack couldn't come back. But in that case, who cares? Cornell isn't winning EIWAs even if Womack wins at 174. A part of me is holding out hope that Berreyesa goes 165 inby klehner - Other Sports

mountainred ugarte scoop85 ugarte Berreyesa started hot but now that it's clear that his game is upper body throws, he is not doing that well. From the little I know of wrestling it does seem Berreyesa is a one-trick pony who needs to expand his repertoire.easier said than done: he's a world class greco-roman wrestler and the rules are just different in freestyle. it's like introducing a bby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
ugarte (2) Hunter Richard needed to win at least one match to get his winning percentage over .700. Both did exactly what they needed to do. Womack was slated against fellow Cornellian Remi Pellumbi, pinned him quickly then medically forfeited out of the rest of the tournament. Richard won two matches, brought his winning % up to .7097, then also medically defaulted out. More accurately, Hunteby klehner - Other Sports

blackwidow mountainred ugarte ESPN+ at 1, in Princeton. Let's Go Red! If we win the tossups we can do this. Probably need them all -- or an unexpected pin -- but a win is doable. Figure Princeton is the heavy favorite at 125, 157, and, now, 149. Probably favored at 165 too. If Cornell steals any of those 4, things are going well. Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
You think Greg D and Saunders skip the Finger Lakes year? I'm just speculating. If Koll thinks that they would put Cornell onto the top step of the NCAA podium as freshman, why not? It's also wild that we're even considering that Darmstadt may not be a starter next year just because he has losses to a pair of top 10 guys. Nothing to do with his losses this year; rather, it is that Cardenaby klehner - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 2019-20 - 4 years ago
mountainred On a forward-looking note, how many of the Finger Lakes Ivyshirts do you think would start today? Ramirez and Fernandez would have to be favored to take over at 165 and 285, right? I’m not sure I would bet against Foca at 174 or Cardenas (when healthy) at 197 either. Next year’s team will be loaded if they can avoid injuries. How about this lineup next year *and* the year after?by klehner - Other Sports
