For a few years (maybe early 80's, I don't really remember) the league kept a team adjusted plus/minus which compared a player's +/- to the average +/- on the team. I don't remember the exact algorithm, but it took into account an adjustment for games played as well. The problem was that an averageby jkahn - Hockey

Since it doesn't appear to be on their web edition, here's what it said Moulson misses all-ECAC team despite output by Tom Boggie Coaches around the league better hope Matt Moulson doesn't carry a grudge. Re: Best NHL players from the ECAC - 20 years ago
Joe Mullen (BC) was an outstanding college and NHL player. He, Joe and Oates should be the first line of NHLers who were ECAC players. Craig Conroy (Clarkson) centers Calgary's first line and is a real solid player. Jack O'Callahan (BU) was a decent NHL defenseman for about eight seasons, mostly with Chicago. BU's (1973-1977) Ricky Meagher had a pretty good NHL career Just some addeby jkahn - Hockey

Just back at a hotel from the Air Canada Centre. Two highlights for me: 1) scratches are announced and Joe isn't one of them 2) Joe scores Great to see Joe score a Stanley Cup playoff goal live. They gave out thundersticks. Fortunately most of the fans didn't overuse them. It wasn't as exciting as the Frozen Four, and we didn't need props there. I'll be at the Air Canada Centre tomorrow night to root for Joe. I hope he's back, unlike the October Wolves game when I went basically to see Bâby play, and he was a healthy scratch. It'll be strange rooting for the Leafs though. I've always found it easy to root against Tie Domi, and, going back in history, Tiger Williams. Great game by both teams ... WAER Syracuse webcast was excellent, much appreciated boys. I've just passed on the compliments to Jason Benetti, WAER sports director and lacrosse play-by-play guy, who is a real good friend of my son Adam (who ironically attends a different trade school, where the team which previously beat us in lacrosse before Syracuse is). Re: Delay of Game - Hand Pass - 20 years ago
It's now obvious to me that the rule and interpretation are quite different in college vs. the NHL., and perhaps that was the source of my initial confusion at the call. In the NHL it would not have been a penalty unless it was ruled that the Denver player closed his hand on the puck. See and paragraph e) thereof.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Delay of Game - Hand Pass - 20 years ago
I know you can't close your hand on the puck, but the whistle didn't seem to blow until the other Denver player played the puck. I was just wondering whether Kotyra ruled that it was a "closed hand" or "thrown puck" or something else, and whether he would've called it if Denver didn't play the puck. There was a similar hand pass earlier in the game that seemed like more of aby jkahn - Hockey
Delay of Game - Hand Pass - 20 years ago
Can anyone clarify the rule and the call on the last penalty in the championship game? I've looked at the rulebook and it seems to say that you can bat the puck 1) in the defensive zone or 2) if you are the first to play it yourself. But, I couldn't find where it was a penalty if it were batted to a teammate. I thought that a hand-pass was just a face-off. It says there is a penalty for &quoby jkahn - Hockey

Only ties the record for lowest scoring Frozen Four game though. 1967 semifinal: Cornell 1 - No. Dakota 0. And they were two of the most exciting games I've ever seen live. I don't know if there were any other 1-0 semifinal scores.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Mark McCutcheon - 20 years ago
In Ned's defense, he took over a very aging team in Detroit, led by a top line featuring 42 year old Gordie Howe and 39 year old Alex Delvecchio. They had been swept in four games in the first round of the playoffs the year before. Had he had a group of youngsters, or been given more time, I believe he would have done well. Murray / Baby - 20 years ago
I watched the last 34 minutes of the Wolves-Barons game on TV in Chicago. I missed the exciting 4-2 first period, but got to see plenty of Doug, although Bâby's didn't seem to be getting a whole lot of icetime. At one point in the 2nd period, Murray was skating with the puck and the announcer said something like "being chased by his former Cornell teammate Stephen Bâby."by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Pairwise Ranking - 20 years ago
Do the math yourself. They benefit as much or more from adding Notre Dame's winning % and their Opp % as they lose from adding 2 to their own loss column. No they wouldn't benefit as much. Here's the math, with some liberal rounding and simplification. Two losses added to a .500 team, would drop their win percentage by .026 to .474. Assuming ND's winning percentage finishes at .600, and the cuby jkahn - Hockey

Re: Pairwise Ranking - 20 years ago
The winning percentage of the teams we played against figures into our RPI. Since we played WMU twice and NDame once, it helps our RPI if WMU wins. Also, since we are close behind NDame in PWR, our only shot a passing them is probably to have WMU win. On the other hand, if NDame stays in the top 15, we get bonus points, which might help us in comparison to some other teams. So, the answer is,by jkahn - Hockey

I received the exact same e-mail from i2 as JTW received. I've responded to them to encourage them to broadcast if not too late, or at least to give me a better understanding of where the ball got dropped (not that that will help). Re: [OT] Former opponent traded - 20 years ago
Also traded yesterday was Keith Ballard, a U. Minnesota soph defenseman who many of us saw in the Frozen Four last year. Ballard was drafted in the first round by Buffalo last June, and has since been traded twice, first to Colorado and now to the Coyotes. He's looked really good to me both last year live and also this year on TV. His opposite point from last year, Paul Martin, has already beeby jkahn - Hockey

Re: [ot] bertuzzi jumps moore-> hospital - 20 years ago
I watched most of the game, other than the first five and last five minutes. As often happens, once one team gets a big lead it turns into goonsville. Directv was picking up the Vancouver feed, and the Canucks were going after Moore all night, hitting him when he was not even near the puck. Other than an early fighting penalty with Matt Cooke, he never retaliated to the hits. This was all inby jkahn - Hockey
