Discussions about sports other than hockey
Re: Hockey Cam confirmed - 19 years ago
It's interesting to note that Colgate's i2sports webcasts are free, obviously subsidized by the university in some manner. I continue to believe that it would be beneficial for Cornell to do the same, as it can be useful for recruiting, for the players' families and for stimulating alumni interest. Unfortunately, the AD apparently does not agree.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: If the Sox can do it, how about Cornell? - 19 years ago
As a Yankee fan, I found the ALCS to be eerily and sadly similar to the ECAC quarter-finals this year. While everyone looks to assess blame for the losers and exalt the winners, we all should remember how there is often little difference between the two. Just one strike being called a ball in game 4 or 5 could have made the Yankees look like world beaters and the Sox look awful, and last year tby jkahn - Hockey
MSU Tickets - 19 years ago
I had heard that Cornell was getting 200 tickets per game from MSU. Don't know how many were set aside for the team and parents, nor how many might remain available at the Ticket Office.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Games @ Michigan State - 19 years ago
Received tickets in the mail today from the Cornell Athletic Ticket Office. Seats are in Section F. From the MSU website it looks like half of Section F is set aside for visitors.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: Games @ Michigan State - 19 years ago
has anyone looked into hotel rooms? I booked the Marriott Town Suites in East Lansing back in April for $71/night, but it doesn't seem to be available now. Since we have friends in the area and I wasn't sure whether we'd be spending Sat. night closer to Detroit, I booked one room for two nights (which I'm using) and another for just Friday night, which I can make available to someone who wantsby jkahn - Hockey
Faithful Sighting - 19 years ago
Saw someone Friday on Walnut St. by the Penn campus wearing a T-shirt that said "Harvard - Cornell 1995 Lynah Rink". I was just leaving Philly driving to NYC, and couldn't stop and ask who he was, but since Harvard doesn't have hockey fans, I assume it was one of the Faithful.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: FF tix - anyone heard? - 19 years ago
I got a rejection letter on Friday. However, there always seem to be enough sellers when their teams don't make it.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Steroids and other drugs - 19 years ago
When did he coach at Cornell? He was freshman team coach my freshman year, '66-'67, while he attended grad school. I don't know if he had any more years here, but my recollection is that he went from Cornell into the Army, but somehow got a job a Knight's assistant at Army, rather than having to really do military time and end up in Nam.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: All-time Cornell team - 19 years ago
My starters: G - Ken Dryden D - Dan Lodboa D - Bruce Pattison F - Joe Nieuwendyk F - Lance Nethery F - John Hughes Coach - Ned Harkness A few comments on the guys not previously mentioned: Pattison was a strong presence on the blue line both defensively and offensively, with a hard slapshot and great skating ability. He also had the uncanny ability when shorthanded to clear the puckby jkahn - Hockey
Matt and Mark - 19 years ago
I was curious as to where Matt might be headed to med school. So, taking an educated guess, I found both Matt and Mark listed in Yale's directory as members of the med school class of '08. Good luck to both.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Next year's line-up - 19 years ago
I was very impressed with Salmela in the games I saw him play last year (in Florida and on TV at Harvard). He didn't make mistakes against top caliber opponents, and I wouldn't be afraid to have him out there in big games. Were it not for some great McKee saves after O'Byrne turnovers in Florida, the perspective of this Forum on O'Byrne might be greatly different. While they both may be more dby jkahn - Hockey
Re: WHA Amateur Draft - 19 years ago
One risk for college hockey might be that the WHA, in order to field teams, signs some collegians, and then the NHL reacts by signing more of them to minor league contracts in an attempt to thwart the WHA. Neither league, however, may be in the financial position to be handing out real attractive offers, but even $100,000 might induce some collegians to leave school.by jkahn - Hockey
WHA Amateur Draft - 19 years ago
8 teams, 30 rounds Shane Hynes by Florida in 19th round Matt Moulson by Hamilton in 30th round There was also a 30 round professional draft. I didn't notice any Cornellians doing a quick scan of the list. See www.worldhockeyassociation.netby jkahn - Hockey
Re: [Softball] Cornell's Second NCAA Playoff Game LIVE on ESPN 3 p.m. ET Friday - 20 years ago
Congratulations to the Big Red softball team. Way to go. Tom wrote: Cornell is three wins away from the 8-team World Series and still has one loss in their back pocket if necessary. The "three wins away" is only true if we win the next two. If we lose the next game, we'd need five more wins to win the regional, and if we win, then lose, we'd then need three more in a row, for a totby jkahn - Hockey

Re: [OT] What Is the Rarest Single-Game Feat in Sports? - 20 years ago
Bringing this subject around to Cornell hockey, here are a few rare single game feats, in chronological order: 1) Cornell gets 70 shots on goal vs. Guelph, and the Guelph goalie makes 66 saves, in a 4-0 Cornell win early in the '67-'68 season. Note: back then, games against Canadian universities were regularly scheduled games, not exhibitions. 2) Cornell scores 19 goals at Yale, Jan. 1968, iby jkahn - Hockey

ECAC Players / NHL Coaches - 20 years ago
A previous thread discussed ECAC players who had successful NHL careers. Watching the NHL playoffs, it occurred to me that four NHL coaches are former ECAC players, albeit all from current Hockey East schools. They are: Ron Wilson (Sharks/ Providence) John Tortorella (Lightning/ Maine) Steve Stirling (Islanders/ BU) Craig MacTavish (Oilers/ Lowell (then Div. II)) Mike Sullivan of the Bruby jkahn - Hockey
Re: NHL Hitman?? - 20 years ago
The segment was also on NHL Tonight last night. Jeremy Schaap '91 was the lead reporter for the segment. I wound up feeling both sympathy and sorrow for Danton, who, based upon the interviews they showed, was portrayed as being totally dominated and brainwashed by Frost. Frost, by the way, had been Danton's assistant coach at age 15 and then wound up being Danton's agent.by jkahn - Hockey
