Re: Cornell 2026 admissions disclosure - 1 year ago
billhoward One wonders how much it's a business decision to fill so much of your entering class in mid-December. So many ways to slice the data. Such as the ED accept rate vs regular rate for under-represented groups. Scoop them up before someone else does. Underrepresented groups like athletes?by David Harding - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
RichH Swampy …we went on to win NC's in all 3 sports. Would anyone seriously criticize AN or MP for their poor handling of athletics? *cough* Yes, absolutely. Sorry, but a couple high-profile teams winning isn’t the only metric of a job like A.D. Unless the team is football?????by David Harding - Other Sports
Re: Ithaca Crime Rate - 1 year ago
scoop85 Friends who live in Ithaca are reporting an increase in violent crime in the city. I wasn't sure if that was just hyperbole, but this data seems to bear that out, as Ithaca is deemed safer (by this criteria) than only 5% of U.S. cities. But as per an Ithaca Times story from last year, the statistics don't appear so dire. I'm curious what other folks in the area are seeing as to any recby David Harding - John Spencer Is Dead

George64 wolcoma The reality is President Martha Pollack hates athletics at Cornell. She is currently running many of our sports teams off campus to East Hill Plaza. The Cornell University Master Plan that envisions the Game Farm Road athletic complex is dated 2015. Martha Pollack assumed office in April 2017. The Reis Tennis Center on Pine Tree Road was built in 1993. The train left the sby David Harding - Other Sports

marty Dafatone Swampy Maybe Ertel is leaving because Cornell's academics were more than he bargained for. Didya ever think of that? Oh wait. He was is the hotel school. Nevermind. On the legacy athletic fields-buildings site (Hoy, Schoellkopf, Teagle, Lynah, Friedman and the decreasing # of Upper Alumni fields) Speaking of Teagle Hall, I didn't realize until a couple of weeks ago how Walter Teagle the source of his fortune and his role in WWII. Re: New indoor campus recreation & sports center - 1 year ago
George64 billhoward Legend has it the campus store construction ran into bedrock -- imaginine that -- closer to the slope of the earth between Day Hall and the Straight. The whole idea of the design was you wouldn't even know the building was there. Rather than dig / jackhammer / dynamite the rock, it was just built enough higher that the sightline up from the Straight all but hides Day Hall.by David Harding - Other Sports

Re: Cornell admissions - 1 year ago
Robb CAS I disagree with Robb that the tremendous increase in applicants are of students who generally aren’t that outstanding. The last year that Cornell provided detailed analysis of the applicant pool was for the Class of 2023, when Cornell accepted fewer than 11% of applicants. In that year, the majority of applicants (not admits) had SATs higher than 1450. Since then applications have increby David Harding - John Spencer Is Dead

scoop85 Trotsky Mike is still out. That's 4 weekends. When Schafer’s game notes from last weekend were posted earlier on the CHA website earlier this week week, they included a comment to the effect (I’m paraphrasing) “I’ve had a rough go with COVID, you should try to avoid it.” FWIW that comment is no longer there. Re: Fencing - 2 years ago
Swampy Robb Weder I know nothing about fencing but just noticed that the team is 19-0 and ranked No. 9 in the country. Cornell only has women's fencing and NCAA fencing is a coed sport, so does that mean that Cornell's best hopes are to compete for individual national championships but it isn't in the picture in the team competition?
