Re: All around excellence - 14 years ago
At least two of the story lines are over (women's hockey and wrestling). I actually kind of feel pretty bad for the students who need to try to keep up with all of this stuff on their spring break.by mnagowski - Other Sports

KeithK imafrshmn KeithK At the end of the day you don't sell newspapers (or get page hits) writing about things that the readers don't care about. That's what matters. Journalism is a business and you have to cater to your customers. If all news outlets cared about was profits, our democracy would be in terrible shape. Oh wait... billhoward Josh '99 billhoward Cornell U has done a good job organizing viewings for basketball.Cornell College, however, has really dropped the ball on that. Sorry for the shorthand. I mean the official Cornell University as opposed to people like us who do a recent job of organizing hockey viewings on our own. It's kind of one and the same. WOW.... this is just sinking in but doesn't this means that our women's hockey team could win the first Cornell NCAA championship for any sport in.... how many years? Anyone know? They really should get more coverage in the Sun because this is really a terrific season for these girls. The Sun is reporting that this is the first time a Cornell women's team will ever compete for a title, let aloby mnagowski - Other Sports

Re: Cornell "Suicide School" NPR Story - 14 years ago
I view suicide as a fatal symptom of a disease. We should treat the disease first and foremost. I agree. But the psychiatrist on NPR today said that Cornell's mental health programs set a 'gold standard' across the country. So I looked at possible second order effects.by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

I feel more strongly about 3 and 4. (And 5. Duh!) I think you read my points 3 and 4 too narrowly, and not as expansively as I had in mind. For instance, with a core curriculum, I would want every student to required to take some classes in the humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, hard sciences, and social sciences. Engineers can still take calculus for engineers, but hotelies and arcby mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

Willy '06 Well the guy did write his thesis on the subject... at Columbia. To be fair, he is a Cornell alumnus, and probably one of the best opinion columnists the Sun has had in a long time. Metaezra's take is certainly worth a read. Thanks, Josh. For those interested I have added some recommendations today as to what Cornell can do to build a better sense of community on campus. Kyle Rose JasonN95 dbilmes Great quote by Scrivens in Monday's Ithaca Journal: "I'm going to be able to call these guys up in 20 years and say 'Hey remember that last game we played at home and how crazy the fans were?' We're not going to remember the score. We're not going to remember who scored, but we're going to remember the rink and the fans and the atmosphere which is what it's allby mnagowski - Hockey

mikek Jeff Hopkins '82 So far I haven't found a combination where we don't make it if we win at least 1 game. FWIW Found one a bunch where if we beat Brown and lose to Union we would be out (one example below puts us at #15)... we don't want Maine anywhere near the HEA final, Ferris winning seems to be better than N. Mich. Playing St. Lawrence in the final (or consy) is a lot better for usby mnagowski - Hockey

If there were to be a five-person committee to investigate and recommend, do you think Andy Noel would want any of us on it, or do you think he'd say we're all hotheads and unable to play well in a sandbox? To be fair, I don't think we're all hotheads. And some of us can even agree on some things some of the time. Re: Hockey webcasts - why is RPI so good? - 14 years ago
Barring our bringing in a half-dozen Cornellian Emmy winners, we could just hire Team RPI since they don't, as in the past eight seasons, have anything to do after the ECAC quarterfinals. Does Team RPI get paid? Or are they student volunteers? I think that's the difference right there.by mnagowski - Hockey
