Better basketball through theoretical physics? - 11 days ago
If there were a totally generic basketball thread, I'd post there, but there isn't one active so I'll initiate some drift here. The "Cornell Chronicle" headlines "Better basketball through theoretical physics?" marty Al DeFlorio billhoward Millman was .737 at Cornell in 2-1/2 seasons (including Covid 2020). At Hopkins, Millman .519 in 5 years. His mixed success at Hopkins suggests he might not be able to win at the highest levels consistently. rss77 Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I think years ago Cornell had in its Master Long term plan a proposal to raise the roof at Lynah not to add more seats but to accomodate chairback seating instead of bleachers. How many years ago are you thinking. See this discussion from 2004 The University master plan from 2008 only mentions some landscaping.by David Harding - Other Sports

I just stumbled upon this collection of reports in the Chicago Tribune of July 21, 1875, on Cornell's big crew victory. I know that there was generally great interest in rowing at the time, but I didn't expect coverage of an eastern race to occupy more than half the front page of a Chicago newspaper.by David Harding - Other Sports

Ken711 Weder I wonder if there will be set criteria for moving games indoors or if it will be based on ~*vibes*~ I happened to be at the same Ithaca hotel as the Dartmouth women's tennis team a few months back and overheard one of the coaches talking to someone about the exact criteria that tennis uses to determine whether matches are held indoors or outdoors. In the 12-6 title game win over Maryland, Rimmer had six of the goals. He was first-team All-America but Army attackman Tom Cafaro won the Enners Award, a forerunner of the Tewaaraton. upprdeck One thing I saw in reading is that a non goalie is not allowed to enter the crease to block a shot? is that not still a rule? It seems pretty clear to me that defenders may play the ball in the crease for a limited time. NCAA Lacrosee rule book 2025-2026 -- Section 21.a Defensive players, including the goalkeeper, with possession of the ball, may not enter the goal-crease area. Tby David Harding - Other Sports

Thanks, Swampy, for the summary. Do I understand correctly that violating the 4/3 rule is what triggers an offside call? I find it curious that it's called offside, since the rule seems to enforce what would be called offside in other sports (hockey, football, soccer), namely players getting too far ahead of the ball.by David Harding - Other Sports

nyc94 Not sure if it's correct but Edmund Ezra Day was the last president to live in the A.D. White House on central campus. For his successor, Deane Malott, the university rented, renovated, and eventually purchased 205 Oak Hill Road. He was given this house for life as a retirement gift, and the university purchased the 511 Cayuga Heights Road property in 1963 for James Perkins—one theoryby David Harding - John Spencer Is Dead

billhoward Bertrand arrived at 25 and already have been an Ontario police officer. You lost a year of eligibility for every year you were Canadian and over 25. This did not applied to USA Americans if, for instance, they served in the military or were missionaries. It was a pretty blatant screw-Canadian-junior-hockey rule. I was about to say it would not have passed legal muster today although, wby David Harding - Hockey

upprdeck you would think if we join forces the board could buy this and people would have a place to stay when they come in for hockey games. house for sale IIRC, Cornell bought the house in the 1950's when Malott's wife refused to live in the A.D. White house on-campus. It seems to me that Corson continued to live in his own house. Maybe Kotlikoff has no interest in moving, either, but suby David Harding - John Spencer Is Dead
