Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Televised Women's Hockey 2015 - 2016 - 8 years ago
In Women's Hockey alumni news, the Calgary Inferno (with Jenner, Saulnier, Campbell, Cudmore) recently played Toronto to a 6-5 loss on Sunday. Natalie Spooner, perhaps Team Canada's best player in the past few years (I think of her as the Canadian version of Hillary Knight), scored an incredible 5 goals and assisted on the other one! Campbell scored a goal, Cudmore had a goal and an assist, Jenneby imafrshmn - Hockey

Just past the halfway point at Cheel and it's not looking promising for the Red, down 3-0. Clarkson are making us look a step slow today; they've been fully able to play the possession game and eventually came up with the goods to get it past Voorheis after a scoreless first period. After a timeout, we opened up our play a bit, finishing the final third of the period with some better chances. It'by imafrshmn - Hockey

Pretty good performance tonight against a fairly dangerous St. Lawrence team. We seemed to have the upper hand in quality of play for the most part and the 4-3 margin reflected the two teams' performances--with a little bit of luck, we could have won by a 2 or 3 goal margin or we could have easily been tied. Jess Brown is catching fire! She put together a hat trick tonight. Her first goal put theby imafrshmn - Hockey

Good result today with an efficient, comfortable, 4-0 win against a somewhat downtrodden Vermont Catamounts side to put us back at .500. Paula Voorheis returned to net for the first time since the superb 6-1 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday 11/21. She looked good out there and solidified her hold on the lead goaltender role. However, the coaching staff has mixed up the goaltending quite a bit thisby imafrshmn - Hockey

Very good, gritty win over BU. It was a physical affair, as many of our matches against BU have been over the years. The refs called plenty of penalties on the Red, but we were able to limit BU's ability to generate scoring opportunities, especially after the first period which was sloppy for both teams. We got some good goaltending today out of Boissonnault--good rebound control, especially duriby imafrshmn - Hockey

This is an incredible statistic. Absolutely! Cornell's history of 0-0 games: 01/20/23 vs. Clarkson ... Coach Nick Bawlf 03/04/89 at Clarkson (D'Alessio in goal) ... Really frustrating game. Colgate's goals were of the flukey variety and the refs put their whistles in their pockets, with a couple egregious missed calls (except very quick whistles to stop play for 'gate's keeper). Our hockey has been fluid at times and disjointed at others. Colgate is decent this year but really shouldn't be ranked 11th. I believe we're still a better team than 'Gate, but we nby imafrshmn - Hockey

Swampy ugarte I have to say, I continue to find Cornell's passing awkward-to-nonexistent. They seem to just fling the puck to open space, and not only when they are dumping into the offensive zone. Very frustrating to watch even when they win. I'm actually much more encouraged. The frosh are really contributing, right out of the box. We don't have any brothers on the team, let alone twins. We got totally demolished because we were exhausted after Friday night and because Marlene Boissonault isn't as adjusted to NCAA-level play as Voorheis. We have a really solid defense corps and it looks like they will be expected to get deep in the offensive zone the way that former players like Laura Fortino and Alyssa Gagliardi were so effective at. Elite forwards like BC's Carpenter and Skarupby imafrshmn - Hockey

Really encouraged by the opening performance against BC. We got some really stellar goaltending out of Paula Voorheis, solid team defense with lots of blocked shots, and a nice goal by Bunton on a 3-on-2. The game ended on a disappointing note, as a string of BC penalties gave the Red a great chance to get back into the game down 2-1 but the all-stars composing the trio on penalty kill for BC didby imafrshmn - Hockey

Iceberg Nice to see that Doug Brianne, Jill, Emily, Cassandra, Hanna, etc., can still work his their magic against Clarkson. One more win and then the NCAA's where anything can happen. But that's jumping ahead. FYPby imafrshmn - Hockey

Swampy Trotsky upprdeck I think we have a better chance of wishing we could allow one goal less than wishing we could score one goal more..Nah, we're below the mean in goals allowed as it is, so we're pushing against a steeper gradient. If "force" is some conceptual combination of ability, preparation, effort, and luck, it requires far more force to move the same distance the farther yby imafrshmn - Hockey

Harvard finished off BU 9-2 to face BC for the Beanpot title. Against Clarkson, SLU pulled their goalie with over 8 minutes remaining, which I've never heard of any coach trying. It paid off for 1 goal (with none allowed!!) but they needed to pot 3 to tie the Knights.by imafrshmn - Hockey
Re: Women's Hockey 2015 - 9 years ago
Great comeback win for the ladies over a frustrating Colgate team. 'Gate is a team that takes advantage of the inconsistent refereeing we have for women's ECAC games and pushes the physical play as far as the refs are willing to tolerate. The Raiders fiercely guarded their 1-0, then 2-0 leads with conservative defensive play, trying to prevent odd-man rushes, and goaltender Rando stopped play wheby imafrshmn - Hockey

Jim Hyla Interesting stats in the final "lives stats ". Miami Cornell Shot Attempts 44 39 Those blocked 9 11 Shots through 35 28 Shots on goal 26 15 Very good find. The damning statistic, to me, is the ratio of shots on goal to shots attempted. 38% for Cornell vs. 59% for Miami. I will be interested to hear some eyewitness reportby imafrshmn - Hockey

all 4 ECAC OOC games this weekend have been losses for league squads. BU won 5-1 at RPI. Game was a lot tighter than score indicates. Vermont won 2-0 at SLU. Minnesota State-Mankato vs. Princeton was cancelled due to flu. On friday, Vermont won 2-1 at SLU. MSU-Mankato won 5-0 over Princeton. Four point weekend, with the hard-fought 4-2 win over a feisty St. Lawrence team! The Red played persistent hockey and had the better of the play, and got solid goaltending from Voorhees. The Saints also got good 'tending from senior Carmen MacDonald, who's been one of the ECAC's top goalies in the past several seasons. With this win, the Red move back to .500 overall and 5-2-0 in ECAC play, andby imafrshmn - Hockey

Most of the goals cleanly beat the (two) goaltender(s). Stunning performance by the Big Red, to be frank. I saw a number of players have the game of their careers--and none of them were Saulnier or Jenner (but those 2 shorthanded goals in quick succession were absolute killers). I think this is ample evidence that the past few weeks of practice have been highly productive. Could this team be deepby imafrshmn - Hockey

Really promising first period in this Tuesday nighter against Syracuse. Score is 1-0, on a rebound goal scored by Brianna Veerman. Although we gave up a few breakaways in on goalie Amelia Boughn, we controlled the majority of play and got better as it went along. They are doing a much better job than last night supporting the puck in the offensive zone and making good decisions with the puck. Annby imafrshmn - Hockey

1-1 to Mercyhurst in a game in which both teams looked rusty at times. More importantly, the Cornell squad maintained systems discipline--arguably their biggest weakness until this point. Unfortunately that meant very conservative offensive zone play tonight. It remains to be seen whether the defense will be able to (safely) play deep pucks, as had been the hallmark of Gagliardi/Cudmore/Fortino/Rby imafrshmn - Hockey

BearLover Jim Hyla BearLover Jim Hyla From today's USCHO article, an interesting quote. “I’m shocked,” said Cornell head coach Mike Schafer when asked about the play of his team’s young goalies. “Not having Joakim Ryan on the blue line and having all of those new defensemen to go along with two new goaltenders, then looking at our defensive performance leaves me shocked.” Read more: Andby imafrshmn - Hockey

Greenberg '97Random pep band question - after the game, as the crowd was filing out toward the Seventh Avenue exit, the horns were playing a simple march with a three-beat ending (coinciding with a "Let's Go Red" from the masses). Is this is a "thing?" I'd think in 20 years I'd have heard their entire repertoire. For Lynah rink games, after the Schafer Beer Victory Song haby imafrshmn - Hockey
