Re: ECAC Albany Seats - 19 years ago
This may sound stupid, but are we assured of playing in Albany? I remember going to a first round ECAC playoff series at Princeton years ago, and I was wondering if we may be subject to a playoff series prior to Albany this year. Also, what hotels (if any) are within walking distance of the Pepsi Arena? I appreciate all responses. Being married with 4 kids, I need to make travel plansby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Dear Uncle Ezra about the cowbell - 19 years ago
Back in my time (early 80s), the cowbell percussionist was some guy from either Chi Psi or DU. Sorry, but I didn't know his name.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Best Places to Watch a College game - 19 years ago
>What do you do up there from Friday 9:10 pm when the first game is over until Saturday 6pm when you watch warmups for the second game? You have three choices: a) drink b) snowmobile c) play hockey on the St. Lawrence and lord have mercy if you get a breakway < Uhh, A?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four at Ford Field? - 19 years ago
I agree that a 65,000-seat stadium will be awfully hard to fill for a Frozen Four, but seeking a maximum crowd is certainly a noble goal. If research indicates that the right number is between 20,000 and 65,000, an indoor football facility may be configured to accommodate that count a la the Carrier Dome for basketball.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Penn-Cornell Wrestling - 19 years ago
Uh, who was that guy with red body paint and tight shorts doing the cheerleading? Maybe it works when experiencing it live. Looked scary on TV. He looked strong enough to be a wrestler. Is he a former grappler?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Places to stay at Yale - 19 years ago
Thanks, guys. So, these are the only 2 that are reasonably close enough to the Whale?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Places to stay at Yale - 19 years ago
Does anyone have recommendations for hotels within walking distance of Yale's rink? (C'mon, Al, I'm counting on you.)by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: BU's new rink - 19 years ago
I remember going to a CU-SU lax game at the Carrier Dome in 1983 or 84 and being pleasantly surprised that beer was sold there. Shoot, I might increase my giving if I could buy beer at Lynah or Schoellkopf. How about a gift threshold that allows you to imbibe at sporting events? It's the least the university can do.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: La Tourelle (OT) - 19 years ago
Thanks. I remember Auberge...driving past it at least. Thanks for the tips. The Turret Room, hmmm.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
La Tourelle (OT) - 19 years ago
My wife and I will be staying in Ithaca to see the Union/RPI series for our annual Valentines Day CU hockey weekend. I was checking hotels and noticed the La Tourelle Country Inn. Any thoughts? The website seems nice, but that could be misleading when it comes to hotels.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Harvard Football Fans agree... - 19 years ago
Harvard had a super season and won't get the recognition they deserve because the Ivy League prohibits post-season play in football. For example, Harvard is the highest-achieving 1-AA football team according to the Sagarin Ratings. What's even more amazing is that the Sagarin Ratings place Harvard number 38 nationwide, 1-A and 1-AA combined. (Although it is hard to believe that Harvard ratesby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey

How was the size of the crowd? I know that Cornell was pushing for a sellout.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Big Red Football @ Bucknell Sept. 18 - 19 years ago
Has anyone ever explained why the Ivies are eligible for post-season tournaments in all sports except football? Is this a vestige of Ivy pigskin conservatism? Over the last 15 years we've seen the Ivies allow freshmen to play varsity and spring practice. Allowing football teams to participate in post-season play sounds reasonable to me. Heck, individual players can play in college all-star gaby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: Cornell v Hahvahd (sucks) in the NHL Labor Dispute - 19 years ago
Of course everyone knows that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman ('74) is a Cornell ILR Alum I didn't know. Thanks for the tid-bit.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: [OT] New University Homepage - 19 years ago
I think the Art Museum photo is outstanding. The space in the middle of the building draws your eye right to it, which leads you to a backdrop (West Hill) about a mile away. This causes the viewer to scan the distant background creating interesting visual apposition with the foreground. The materials composing the foreground (concrete, glass, etc.) also stand in contrast to that of the backgroby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey

cbuckser Wrote: Until 1993 or 1994, Cornell used to have a junior varsity team. Up until 1980, Cornell used to have JV baseball as well. As many know, the Ivies abandoned Freshmen football in the 90's, and the football JV schedule is now just a few games against prep schools. Is this a trend in other sports for sub-varsity squads? Bill, do you mean something like "mow it and they will come"? My life is pretty exciting, eh?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Grass Cutting (kinda OT) - 19 years ago
When cutting my grass yesterday, I tried to use the overlapping pattern of a zamboni driver to speed up my turns. I wasn't very successful, though I will keep trying. Has any other hockey fan been so bored in July to fantasize that their riding mower was a zamboni? I can't be the only one.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: (OT) Reunion - 19 years ago
Awesome advice from everyone, thanks. Bringing a fan was definitely the best contribution. I couldn't get any scoop on the future of Lynah, although I did have the fortunate opportunity to meet and talk with Coach Schafer. Perhaps I can provide more detail about Reunion tomorrow or another day. Old timers like me need a few days to recuperate from such fun.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: (OT) Reunion - 19 years ago
Thanks for the good advice. What about clothes (men's and women's)? Do I need a dress shirt, tie, red blazer and straw hat?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: (OT) Reunion - 19 years ago
Ahhh, the hot truck. Do they still make a WGC? BTW, thanks to Dave Harding for all the ideas. I've already reached out to most of my fraternity friends, but only a few are going. Anybody else here going?by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
(OT) Reunion - 19 years ago
I'll be attending Reunion shortly, but I've never been to one before. What's worth doing, what's not? Any strategies? Scott Kominkiewicz `84by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: OT: Goalie masks vs. catcher's masks - 20 years ago
The chicken or the egg? As a kid, I was a baseball catcher and I always wondered why hockey goalies wore those white contoured masks instead of something like a catcher's mask. Eventually, hockey goalies began using caged masks that resembled catcher's masks instead of those thin pieces of plastic that people now only identify with Jason from the Friday the 13th movies. Ironically, I think theby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey

Re: New Arena for Cornell - 20 years ago
I always thought that it would be a good idea to put a small balcony or some form of luxury boxes along the west wall of Lynah (near the scoreboard). The closest thing I can think of is the press box at PU's Baker Rink. There are a few options and advantages. Of course, more people would be able to see the game, albeit only a hundred or so. In addition, the universtiy may be able to use tby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: key 'cheer' - 21 years ago
I like the cheer when done "correctly" as well. The variation in medium (jingling metal as opposed to hoarse voices) makes it all the more interesting. It's a unique sound. Who cares if we didn't start the cheer? We weren't the first to play hockey, yet that doesn't stop us from enjoying it.by Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: slope day - 21 years ago
I graduated in 1984 and I think we called it Slope Day. Who knows? There were a lot of huge parties on campus then, and I made a point of going to as many as I could. I only recall one slope day though -- Gary U.S. Bonds played. I wouldn't have gotten my knickers in a twist over losing slope day. Every weekend had its parties, and the slope event was just one of them. Perhaps it's a goodby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
Re: pepsi arena - 21 years ago
Way back in 1996 - final score 33-27, in double-overtime. Not just the first overtime game in Ivy football history, but the first overtime in college football history. Chad Levitt had a great rushing game, IIRC. Right you are. My wife and I drove up from NJ for that game. It may have been an early-season Homecoming, but I'm not sure. Levitt single-handedly chewed up the Princeton defense in Oby Scott Kominkiewicz - Hockey
