marty Bill, I thought you would comment but really wondered if you have ever heard of this: It was she who oversaw the “advance text” portion of the mag, stories that mostly ran only in subscriber issues (versus newsstand), and only then for subscribers in affluent zip codes. In addition to regional editions (1-2 pages that are different for NYC, NJ, CT, NYS outside NYC), publications target morby billhoward - John Spencer Is Dead

John Walters' piece on the further demise of Sports Illustrated has the undercurrent of "Who? Me? Laid off? My magazine is losing ground? But I went to Yale!" It happens when the staff of magazines regarded as the best -- by National Magazine Awards, by circulation, by ad pages, by revenues, by the percentage of staff from the Ivies / Seven Sisters / Little Three -- lose their traction,by billhoward - John Spencer Is Dead

RIT as of January 2024 is in the polling Top 20 (19 as of Jan. 22, both polls). If only we had two more games allowed, we could have played them this year in an early January dead week. They would be a reasonable replacement if Quinnipiac decides to flee to Hockey East or <gag> B1G.by billhoward - Hockey

Also the era when Cornell with Black players beat Kentucky at Kentucky. Legend has it that the Wildcats' coach, Adolph Rupp, realized the future of basketball was not White-only. We won 92-77 (December 1968) and it helped Rupp let the state of Kentucky see the handwriting on the wall. That and Kentucky six months earlier losing the NCAA championship to UTEP (now Texas Western) with all-Black starby billhoward - Other Sports

ugarte Princeton is running away with the Ivies on Kenpom (48) and are maybe an at-large candidate if they are a one-loss team heading into the ILT and get get upset. Cornell is creeping up on Yale for second (both in the 110s) in the conference with Harvard in 4th (~150). If this keeps up, great news. I like getting to the ILT. Just need a chance. There are more than 15,000 college students in Canton, pop. 7,000 (St. Lawrence, Appleton Arena, 3,200 seats, and older by 7 years than Lynah) and Potsdam pop. 15,000 (Clarkson, Cheel Arena 4200 seating). So, yeah, there's food to be had but it is not as, ah, eclectic as in Ithaca. Beyond pizza, there's Chinese, Indian, Thai. County Seat in Canton has a goodly sized bar. You'll find something. CU2007 upprdeck At the same time our HS has had far more concussions from soccer than football for many years. I read somewhere that girls soccer was the 2nd highest concussion rate, behind football. And I think USA Soccer banned headers until age 15 or so because of it - could be wrong there. Odds of winning 2024 NCAAs - 4 months ago
An oddsmaking site (betting site) says Cornell men have the 11th best odds of winning the NCAAs (22/1), with North Dakota the favorite and Quinnipiac the only more highly regarded ECAC team. Cornell women have the seventh best odds of winning, with TOSU favored and ECAC teams Colgate, Clarkson and Quinnipiac rated above Cornell. Update: Cortland won the 2023 D-III championship 38-37 over North Central (Ill.) 38-37 12/15. #1 North Central scored with a minute left, went for 2 to win and didn't make it. In the FCS semifinal, Albany got clobbered by South Dakota State, 59-0. 4 of the 32 NCAA D-III football playoff teams were from New York State: Cortland, Ithaca, Union and Alfred State. So weird that we play two at Arizona State but we also may play them Dec. 30 in the Lake Placid Adirondack Winter Festival second day, depending on the outcome of Cornell-UMass and Clarkson-AState Friday games. For that, seats are available. And by the way, a lot of hotels are going $600-$1000 for Friday-Saturday. We will be in Phoenix/Scottsdale that week so Gwen and I are likely to be thereby billhoward - Hockey
Re: NCAA NIL/Subdivision Proposal - 4 months ago
Sounds like a discussion where many of us could be in violent agreement as well as disagreement. Why would Olivia Rodrigo, sorry, Olivia Dunne, want to share her big NIL payout to the LSU gymnasts who are less skilled that her? As well as the LSU gymnasts who are more skilled as gymnasts, less skilled with social media presence? Football and basketball may have their super-big-time world.by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Dan Swanstrom new Cornell head football coach - 4 months ago
Ken711 The new indoor practice facility slated for construction this Fall is a good start. But, yes the new coach needs all the resources necessary to recruit student athletes and hire and retain a quality staff. 37 varsity sports, 1 practice facility. Does a 3-4 football team get priority over an 8-3 soccer team? And if the women's soccer team is 9-2?by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: NCAA NIL/Subdivision Proposal - 4 months ago
If NIL money flows directly from companies/sponsors to athletes, how is Title IX involved? If the schools try to get their grubby mits on the NIL money, then maybe there'd be university involvement. Why would athletes want to do that? Are individual athletes driven by the common good or more money for me?by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Dan Swanstrom new Cornell head football coach - 4 months ago
Cornell either works at internet speed in hiring or the process has been running in the background since before the season ended: 17 days from the departure announcement of David Archer to the hiring of Dan Swanstrom. Hopefully not long enough to lose recruits. Hopefully early enough to sway players choosing among the Ivies. ACM This is in the running for the worst-produced video of the year. The audio levels were lower than other streaming channels I jumped to between periods. Had to catch up on the travails of Santos and the former President. How many times can one announcer say "takes the puck down Broadway"? And yet no shoutout for the Naked Cowboy.
