Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Cornell softball coaching change - 2 months ago
CU77 Weder A few years back there were several player complaints about the coach, so I hope it isn't anything along those lines this time around. That is a pretty damning article, with mulitple on-the-record complaints of the coach not following injury protocols. That these were dismissed by the AD is a bad look. In some sports, some teams, it's the player who tries to conceal an injury to keeby billhoward - Other Sports

2025 Ivy League Lacrosse Tournament Fri 5/2 #1 Cornell vs. #4 Yale (finish in the Ivy League) Fri 5/2 #2 Princeton vs. #3 Harvard Sun 5/4 championship In ECAC hockey, the #1 team plays the earlier game, and now it's just set that way. This gives the 1-seed the opportunity to grab a shower afterward and watch who they'll be playing Sunday. Also 2 more hours of rest. When it was at Columbby billhoward - Other Sports

Re: Is Cornell v Dartmouth a trap? - 2 months ago
Exactly. Some Dartmouth die-hard lacrosse fan (assume such exists, for argument's sake), thinks he could afford to lose $100, and he thinks of how often the Green have upset Cornell in Canada's other national sport. For us, we might think "easy money" but realize we'd really hate the off chance of losing $2200. This written in jest. I see from the NCAA basketball tournament, when thby billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Is Cornell v Dartmouth a trap? - 2 months ago
What trap? The people who take your money, were one the wagering type, say Dartmouth won't win. Oddsmakers (here Draftkings) believe Cornell will win by 9 points (the favorite is the one with the minus in front), the two teams will score 26 or 27 goals total (so an 18-9 likely final), and the moneyline means a Dartmouth fan putting down $100 would win $2200 if the Big Green win.by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Cornell softball coaching change - 2 months ago
WederSoftball did quite well under Dick Blood (623-347-2, 208-113) with multiple Ivy titles, and women's lacrosse has had multiple strong periods under Jenny Graap, including a Final Four appearance, so it can be done. And Jenny Graap last month was signed to a "multi-year" contract extension. When she took Cornell WLax to the final four in 2002, that was the first ever for a Cornell woby billhoward - Other Sports

Long time at Cornell (assistant coach in 2002, HC in 2015). Winning record of .253 (107-219-1), .319 Ivy (51-109). This is a sudden departure, obviously. I was about to say that Ithaca is not an easy place to play softball or baseball. But, compare to Dartmouth, the closest Ivy to the Artic Circle. I tallied up the Green's last 5 seasons; their Ivy record is .587. BTW, Cornell has scrubbed thby billhoward - Other Sports

You read "Gillette Stadium" and think, oh, cripe, we lost in the NCAA final four. The game was early April, Cornell had already played a half-dozen games. It was Rob Pannell's sophomore year, he was en route to an All-America and Turnbull (attackman of the year) Award. But he was only one player. Let us assume and trust the game will turn out well for Cornell.by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Cornell hosting the Ivy League Tournament - 2 months ago
No bathrooms in the stadium until warm weather is a minor problem for guys, a big hassle for women. It was freezing up at Lehigh in the opener, but they had a really nice bathroom (by stadium standards) as well as the team dressing rooms. This on their sports complex which is a pretty good hike away from main campus. IIRC we also hosted an NCAA quarterfinal in the past decade and plumb ran ouby billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2025 - polls 4/21/25 Cornell #1 - 2 months ago
Cornell as of 4/21 (and 11-1) remains #1 in both media and USILA/Coaches polls. Now 5 weeks at the top. Syracuse - Richmond - Harvard hover around 10-12 in the polls and that has an impact on whether at season's end we get credit for beating top 10 or top 15 teams. Cornell is also #1 in the Quint Kessenich ratings: Quint Kessenich, Lax All-Stars, 4/21/25 5) Penn State Penn State haby billhoward - Other Sports

Bleachers? West Stands has been down for well over a decade. The problem is the track around the field that has not be used to competition for decades keeps fans far from the field. Not only are at-Harvard fans close to the action, it appeared one side has been bulldozed to make for a raised viewing platform.by billhoward - Other Sports

He doesn't need my help (Adam doesn't) but ... Actually, BU has more undergraduates than Cornell, ditto NCAA titles and Hobeys. BU is not a safety school, certainly not in this century. Did you argue with your professors a lot about, say, the Oxford Comma? Did girls pick you up after that? Re: Cornell @ Harvard Men's Lacrosse, Saturday, April 19, noon - 2 months ago
Good start and finish by Cornell, matching ends 5-1 scoring for Cornell in the first and fourth. Nice job building up the early lead knowing CJ Kirst would kick in the afterburners.by billhoward - Other Sports
Re: Cornell @ Harvard Men's Lacrosse, Saturday, April 19, noon - 2 months ago
Three by Kirst in very short order, two of them nine seconds apart. Way to respond: massive force, instant retaliation. I was liking that Goldstein picked up some of the slack. He's got years left here. Unless NIL.by billhoward - Other Sports

Re: Cornell @ Harvard Men's Lacrosse, Saturday, April 19, noon - 2 months ago
Mid-second, Cornell is awesome on faceoffs 11x14, 9 turnovers (6 caused by our hosts), 4 by Harvard. Kirst is not a scoring factor, yet, but neither is Harvard's Tewaarton candidate, Sam King.by billhoward - Other Sports

Cornell schedule, Harvard schedule, Harvard pregame story all say noon. ESPN+ placeholder says 1:00. George64The first time I ever said “Go Harvard.” The hockey team still sucks, though! I'm going to have this one bronzed. This is sort of like reverse Nazis: First they came for the elite schools.
