Attendance figures lie? - 19 years ago
We had a thread a couple weeks back regarding published attendance figures vs. actual seats in the chairs attendance figures. (One side said: all the owners care about is tickets sold. Other side: concession revenue and parking is important, too, and sold-not-used tickets are a sign of disinterest in the team.) Most places appear to report tickets-sold attendance figures even though the handheldby billhoward - Hockey

Re the allegation that Topher Scott comes up short in the shooting accuracy department: From three feet away, I think it's as much luck as skill in putting the puck in. Reality is, on those could-woulda-shoulda situations in front of the net, you score on, what, one in five, one in ten? Otherwise all hockey games with be 8-6 not 4-2.by billhoward - Hockey

There were a couple pictures of handsome Cornell-jersey wearers early on and before the game, but then it seemed as if the cameras found retby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Cornell-BC post mortem - 19 years ago
You saw the game in person or on TV? On TV, there seemed to be about 10 highlights-caliber plays of Topher Scott (and others) swarming the net, deking, and scoring, or batting home rebounds. Well, actually everything but the scoring part. There were a half-dozen plays where we could have scored. Good chances in close near the net. Every game has some; it looked as if Cornell had more than that.by billhoward - Hockey

Cornell-BC post mortem - 19 years ago
After losing 3-2 (plus ENG making it 4-2) to BC in the Everblades now Florida College Classic, it seems there's a pony in there somewhere: - Cornell survived a crummy first period and held the upper edge in periods 2 and 3 including periods of domination. We didn't give up. - in the third period Cornell didn't pass-pass-pass-oops-(pass outside the zone) waiting for the perfect shot that neby billhoward - Hockey

Three promos for Hockey East so far, none that I saw for the ECAC. I'm sure CSTV gave both sides a couple free promo slots. One other problem with minor sports on what hopes to be major TV: thin advertiser coverage, so you see the same 3-5 advertisers again and again. Oh, yeah, and it's not HD. ... but it's a darn sight better than radio or Webcasts. Too bad the place looks kind of emby billhoward - Hockey
CSTV: overbearing graphics - 19 years ago
Check out the scoreboard graphic that overruns the upper left corner of the screen on the CSTV telecast: It's so big it actually extends to the center of the screen. Makes you wonder if Job One for CSTV is providing good sports coverage on TV for college sports fans, or overrunnng the screen with logos and graphics. I think I've seen as many as three graphics onscreen at once - during the actionby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Everblades in Estero - 19 years ago
That it was changed from Everblades Classic, kind of a cool name, to the generic Florida College Classic, has been mentioned on Cornell's site and on USCHO. As to why, that part I've missed. Perhaps the Everblades hockey team that plays in Germain Arena, didn't want the competition, or maybe the college tournament didn't want to give free publicity to the Everblades. The arena itself changed itsby billhoward - Hockey

It's great to see your kids' eyes light up this time of year. Even the child whose cheapest desired gift was an iPod Mini and the one who wants Vaughn goalie pads (by brand). Sheesh, price a pair of them sometime when the kid is outgrowing them every 18 months. Re: Harvard vs NM, NM wins Shootout 3-2 - 19 years ago
Half the Harvard team was sick. Maybe in Minnesota it was dairy food allergies? Don't know how much you can blame the backup goalie (who the Crimson said has played well in earlier games when he played) when the team allows 4PPGs in 5 opportunities. On the other hand, that is useful game experience. I wonder if Cornell will go to the No. 2 to play a game in January - February against someby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Merrimack beats 'em, 6-4 - 19 years ago
Harvard outshot Merrimack 40-19 in the consolation but gave up four power play goals on five penalties. The other goalie, Justin Tobe, played for Harvard. Note the Cantabs came from 6-2 down to score twice in the last 2-1/2 minutes for the final 6-4 score. That's tenacity. Of course that still a loss, too.by billhoward - Hockey
Cornell at Harvard TV rights - 19 years ago
Wonder what Harvard would say if a half-dozen enterprising Cornellians wanted to create their own Webcast of the Harvard game? The place is sold out so it's not going to cost the Cantabs any ticket revenue. Maybe this would be a good project for Cornell's office of sports information.by billhoward - Hockey

Fair Use means you can reproduce an excerpt of the book to show the author was brilliant or deranged, and the author can't stop you even if you're his worst enemy. One paragraph excerpted in a 1,000-word review, no problem. Reproducing and commenting on the entire text, you got a problem. Even criticism (negative) tends to help sell the work. A basketball court is 50 x 94, or about one-quarter the size of a hockey rink. (Some HS or college courts are 50x84.) The best sporting experience is an alternating combination of good television and being there in person. For me it's a 4-5 hour drive to Ithaca and I have kids playing sports every weekend for the next, say, eight years. Lynah in person is pretty much an occasional thing suppby billhoward - Hockey
Re: 2004-05 men's hockey media guide - 19 years ago
That would be interesting, getting in trouble for helping distribute in better format something Cornell wants widely distributed. Somewhere some sportswriter who really wants the entire guide is going to be rip-roaring mad he or she has to make seven separate downloads, maybe more until part six gets to download. What better place for economic excess than New York City? A basketball-only arena is a far better place to watch basketball because you're a lot closer to the action, just as a football stadium without a track is a better place to watch a football game. Good PR for Cornell whether Cornell's PR staff generated the lead for CSTV or Adam W passed along the idea or some other way. Peace on earth, good will toward men (and too bad about Johnson not going to New York). At least Sox fans and Yankees fans have things in common, probably respect for Joe Torre's abilities, perhaps a desire to see pictures in Esquire of whoever Derek Jeter is currently dating, and certainly the common level of esteem we have for George Steinbrenner. [OT] Hockey rinks in US? - 19 years ago
Does anyone know how many hockey rinks there are in the US? Maybe this could be one of those IQ-savvy questions Microsoft asks job candidates such as how many gas stations there are in the US? (You have to know the approximate US population and then decide how many people each gas station might support.) At 100 rinks per state, that would be 5,000. More in Minnesota, fewer in Alabama and Hawaby billhoward - Hockey
Re: RIT to go D-I - 19 years ago
There are a bunch of rinks on upper floors. I recall reading a couple in NYC are like 10 or so floors up. It's not as tough as it seems because once you've got a clear span (support posts would be tough on defensemen skating backwards) there's not much weight to support - no furniture, no wall partitions, just a fraction of an inch of frozen water.
