Re: The GAA Battle - 19 years ago
Yes, it's obsessive. But does one more decimal place really make a difference, on GAA or save pecentage? As others noted, for GAA the rounding difference amounts to to perhaps 5 minutes played more or less if you carry the season out to three deccimal places. Remember the term JND, or just noticeable difference? I think if you carry it out one more decimal place, you've gotten beyond what'sby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Cornell-SLU post-game thread - 19 years ago
PWR and TUC is so much more confusing than just yelling LGR. Basically, you want to beat everybody, then hope everybody you beat does well, plus especially people you split a series with, which means you didn't beat everybody, and then you want to root for NYS and Ivy and ECAC teams but only once you have trounced them (or at least shut them out). and you wonder if your PWR might be helped by splby billhoward - Hockey

Oh, no, 42 seconds in. At least it's just 2 minutes. The refs are gonna kill us again tonight. Wait, the game hasn't started yet. Never mind. (Okay, I'm getting anxious for the game to start, too.)by billhoward - Hockey
Re: Traylen benched for tonight (roughing call with 1:47 left) - 19 years ago
From the game story online: >>> The momentum was squarely in the Knight's favor when Traylen took perhaps the stupidest penalty that a player could take. Engineer Kevin Broad was forechecking and planted himself in front of Traylen with 1:47 remaining in the third. Broad goaded Traylen a little and Traylen took a left-handed swipe that connected with Broad's head. Peter Feola saw iby billhoward - Hockey
USCHO predictions - Cornell vs. Clarkson, SLU - 19 years ago
USCHO predicts a four-point weekend for Cornell .... Cornell 4, Clarkson 1 Cornell 2, St. Lawrence 1 ... and 3-2 wins for travel partner Colgate each night. Juan Martinez likes our defense all the time but not quite our offense. Hmmmn.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: National TV Impressions - 19 years ago
Some old timer who knows All-America Pete Shier '78 who's in town with his kids for the weekend and attending the game should tip off Adam Wodon (sidelines color tonight?) and maybe point out Shier ... see if Adam wants to do an interview during a timeout or between periods. Pete had some thoughtful comments on how much better conditioned players are today.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: What's it take to get an at large bid? - 19 years ago
This week's Bracketology on uscho.com has Cornell in the band of four No. 2 seeds and playing UMass Lowell in the first round. That sounds like a beatable team. (hah). Next week, who knows. It would be incredible feat to be one of the four No. 1 seeds.by billhoward - Hockey

Re: How good are the Patriots? - 19 years ago
Like the NFL is really shocked and annoyed that Janet Jackson's boob popped out for a couple seconds. The NFL says it is committed to wholesome family fare. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders bouncing up and down on the sidelines for 35 years, that's wholesome. Janet undraped for 3.5 seconds, that's unwholesome?by billhoward - Hockey
Re: How good are the Patriots? - 19 years ago
Patriots are a great team. I want the Patriots to win, though it's not the same desire as seeing the Sox win. But blow out the Eagles? Don't think so and, for the sake of entertainment value, don't hope so. The majority of these stupid XXXIX (why can't they just say 39?) years, if it wasn't for the cheap sex thrills in the beer commercials, there'd be nothing to watch.by billhoward - Hockey

Photographers getting treated poorly by people who are (sometimes barely) in authority is non-news. It falls into the category of dog bites man and is probably applauded by most people who would say in a different time and place, "So what if those horrible camera-men got roughed up a little when Sherriff Connor kept those agitating Negroes from rioting in our streets. Re: I tried... [5 steps to accreditation] - 19 years ago
Fan / user group / buff sites everywhere run into this problem. Some conferences, conventions, and press boxes have a flat out ban. Others say they don't accredit fan sites then make a few careful exceptions. Sometimes there are personality conflicts and even when the people on one side go, institutional memory lives on. Can't believe we're several screens deep in this discussion before you pointed out an obvious other possibility: the parents from hell. We don't know if Davenport's parents are loving, caring, nurturing, and decent. Or not. But a statistically disproportionate number of sports parents believe their baby is the best catcher, quarterback, goalie, or pole vaulter to come out of Long Island or thby billhoward - Hockey

There's *any* kind of drink one cannot get in Hanover? Or are you making your focus selective and limiting it to drinks made from bottles bearing federal tax stamps? It is so much more convenient in the land of the Green when whatever one drank at the game can later be poured, safely, into the radiator.by billhoward - Hockey

Re: tuesday at the rink - 19 years ago
Basically Jaffe says Cornell is a good team (actually, he has good words to say about every team). They'll beat Clarkson if they get more PP chances Friday. They're his pick to win the ECACs though Colgate and Harvard could be tough. Cornell could go quite a ways in the NCAAs but not necessarily Frozen Four and if not, next year could be Cornell's year.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: Trouble in Sioux Country - 19 years ago
One interesting thing about online sites is they see reader feedback right away (if they'r elooking) and they can shape the story to get more stuff in. Like the guys age. Overall, his pending DUI charge, the affairs at Clarkson last year and this, etcetera, all make hockey players look like jerks and offset the good done by people like Bâby. I scanned the article and didn't see his age listed. Technically, you're not supposed to be drinking until you're 21. Interesting to see what ND does once his BAC comes back if it's over .08 or .10. Re: This Week's Column Up - 19 years ago
The two point men run the click-click-click part of the play but as defenses get better at blocking shots from the point, one wonders if the guy along the boards doesn't have a tougher job because he's being challenged by a defender more than the point men, he has a chance to score (maybe) through traffic, and he can pass to Moulson as he's about to break free.
