Re: Cornell 4 - Niagara 2 - 10 years ago
Josh '99 css228 Let's face it being the last to touch the puck isn't really scoring a goal, its just how they credit an own goal. That's why when everyone thinks first NHL goalie goal they think Ron Hextall and not Billy Smith, even though the latter is the technically correct answer. If the question is "who is an asshole?", either is the correct answer. Billy Smith was a great guy to haby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Hockey Analytics: What Does It Mean For Cornell? - 10 years ago
This article posted today on puckpossession.com suggests that the strength of Fenwick Close's predictive value has been overestimated by the analytics community. As a bonus, the post contains a photo of Douglas Murray and others doing a stick salute after a Sharks' game on home ice a couple of years ago.by cbuckser - Hockey

The next time your travel plans go awry, be thankful that what happened to Sean Collins today isn't happening to you. #CBJ add F Sean Collins to roster on emergency recall from @AHLspringfield Will join team in time for tonight's game at Toronto.— Todd Sharrock (@ToddSharrock) November 25, 2013 #CBJ has voided emergency recall of F Sean Collins. Re: Hockey Analytics: What Does It Mean For Cornell? - 10 years ago
css228 There was an NHL Numbers article on that, but I'm seemingly unable to find it. I believe these are the articles you had in mind: A Season's Worth of Zone Entries More on the Advantages of Puck Possession I'm still not convinced that confounding factors don't explain much of the apparent advantages of carrying the puck into the zone. I would love to see future studies on this, hoby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Yale 11/23 - 10 years ago
Josh '99his brought a smile to my face - haven't thought about Tony Bergin in quite a while. Then I can bring this thread full circle. Among the four losses to defending national champions between March 1990 and last weekend that Give My Regards kindly listed was the 11/21/95 shellacking at BU. My strongest memory of that game is watching Tony Bergin waive bye-bye at a BU player after an altercatby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Yale 11/23 - 10 years ago
Yikes. I tried to write the post on my phone and posted prematurely. I'll try again from the beginning. I am fairly, but not intimately, familiar with the hockey analytics you're writing about, and I want to raise a couple of caveats. First, shot attempts are merely a proxy for puck possession. We use it because that's the most freely available data. Shot attempts are a good proxy---betterby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Yale 11/23 - 10 years ago
css228 Swampy css228 dag14 You are right. We were outshot 31-29. What other facet of the game did we not control? Time of possession? Hits? PP? PK? Not only was this our best game so far this season, this was the best game I have seen a Lynah since I can't remember when. Gives one hope for the rest of the season. Well the shots weren't really the problem. You're going to give up shots wheby cbuckser - Hockey

Re: Recruits - 10 years ago
Sam Sternschein is from Syosset, which is also the hometown of recruit Corey Hoffman. Here is a blurb on him from USHR in August 2012: Sam Sternschein, F, ’98 (Long Island Gulls) — A player we were not previously familiar with. A big kid – 6’2” -- with a soft set of hands, Sternschein needs to add some quickness and tenacity to his game, but his potential is very high. It is not easy to findby cbuckser - Hockey

Re: Alumni in the Pros - November 2013 - 10 years ago
We have better alumni news tonight. Sean Collins got his first NHL point tonight in Washington. In addition, Jonathan Quick left tonight's Kings game with a lower-body injury. If the injury is significant, Ben Scrivens will get a lot of playing time.by cbuckser - Hockey

Re: Game worn jerseys available - 10 years ago
Trotsky andyw2100There must be a lot of variability in this. Because the year after Topher Scott graduated, I snagged both his senior jerseys (home and away) for my daughter and (now ex-) wife, and both came with not only the nameplates still attached, but also the captain's "C"s and the ECAC patches. I had read here to expect all of those to be removed, so was pretty pleased to find alby cbuckser - Hockey

ithacat RichH sah67 Michael McCarron, brother of John, who formerly committed to Cornell, and then vetoed that for a commitment to Western Michigan, has now scrapped the NCAA plan entirely, and will report to the London Knights of the OHL after signing a three-year deal with Montreal: I'm not sure if he "vetoed" Cornell, or there was an issue with admissions. Re: 2013-14 Schedule - 10 years ago
Kyle Rose Josh '99 ursusminor Jim Hyla Wow FlagDUDE08 has done a great job the last few off-seasons compiling the schedules from fragmentary and often contradictory information. It looks like it is now almost complete. I am sure that you realize how tough this is for just one team, let alone all 59.Can anyone explain how a spreadsheet with this info got shared with me on Google Drive without meby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 10 years ago
I don't understand why John Buccigross was the least bit surprised. It has been well known that UConn has been looking to upgrade its program as it transitions from Atlantic Hockey to Hockey East. This is an obvious way for UConn to make a splash.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Central Scouting Final 2013 Rankings S&M digression - 10 years ago
ugarte Is Bardreau's low ranking because of the injury? It certainly had an impact. He lost the ability to impress the scouts after his tremendous WJC. Remember, NHL teams have passed on Cole in two drafts. Will all thirty make the same mistake a third time? I believe that Cole has a much better chance of having a useful NHL career than your average sixth rounder. I hope Garth Snow and the Islby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Cornell hockey at MSG every year - 11 years ago
TimV Money aside, where else will they play in front of 19,000 people? A great experience and a recruiting tool to use against UMass Lowell. Does the allure of playing biennially in Madison Square Garden have any value to a player who isn't sold by the prospect of playing in the Beanpot Tournament in front of 17,500 people every February?by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Red Cast Really Sucks - 11 years ago
Regarding your second concern, I can see no reason why each channel wouldn't have subchannels. Also, it has been my impression that the league-wide streaming would replace, rather than supplement, individual schools' streaming.by cbuckser - Hockey

Trotsky billhoward Amen. Especially the part that Schafer is aware of what needs to be addressed next season. As are the assistants, and you don't want the following on your resume: "hired by a perennial contender who promptly fell apart." Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
Bringing this back on topic (but at risk of breaking the united front), as I watch George Gwozdecky's press conference, I am further convinced of the inanity of firing Mike Schafer. Unrealistic expectations yield atrocious decisions.by cbuckser - Hockey

TrotskyThis all comes down to what one thinks the "baseline" of Cornell hockey is, absent any extraordinary effect either constructive or destructive. That in turn likely comes down to how they were during one's formative Lynah Faithful experience. So, for example, my first three years we missed the ECAC playoffs entirely with what in today's ECAC would translate into a 6th or 7th plaby cbuckser - Hockey
