Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Opponents and Others, 2021-22 - 2 years ago
billhoward IIRC correctly, the donor is doing the work of two people. RPI had something like 11 people on the team. 14 skaters and a goalie, although Erik Larson was the manager who suited up for one game. There is hope that the new president who is an alum will be better. He did ask about the team in an interview. Of course, that means he hasn't been paying attention.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others, 2021-22 - 2 years ago
I would be surprised if it lives in its own silo. RPI will probably just shift some money which it would have used to pay Coach Smith to something else. It will allow the coach to be called the C. Lloyd Bauer Men's hockey coach, which may look good on his résumé.by ursusminor - Hockey

Thanks, George64 and dag14. I thought that $2M wasn't enough. An article in the Albany Times Union said that the funds would be used for recruiting. That seems strange.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others, 2021-22 - 2 years ago
RPI received a $2M donation from Dr. Lloyd Bauer, a member of the '54 NCAA championship team, to endow the head coach position. Does anyone know how much the corresponding endowment is at Cornell? I wonder if $2M is enough, although it certainly can help a lot. I also wonder why we don't get players anymore who major in engineering, science, or architecture and then go on for a Ph.D. But thby ursusminor - Hockey

CU2007 dbilmes The Yale coach couldn't have been too happy with his son for leaving his team shorthanded for Saturday's consolation game of the Connecticut Ice Classic. Trotsky billhoward marty RPI leading Harvard 1-0 in the 3rd. RPI softens up the Crimson for the weekend. Men's Hockey Blanks Harvard 2-0 ... at HarvardLOL. They had their Princeton game. Harvard is admitting spectators at games. I apologize is if this was mentioned already here. I only received it because RPI's game is referred to.by ursusminor - Hockey

Re: Yale game postponed - 2 years ago
I will throw in my two cents. In my opinion only the top eight should make the playoffs. That still means that the majority of the teams are included. As someone who grew up watching baseball when there were two leagues, each with eight teams, and there were no playoffs, just a World Series, I feel that a championship should just be for the top teams. I have a hard time accepting that teams withby ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Second ND Game Thread - 2 years ago
Dafatone billhoward Trotsky Holy shit. Google the population for the Dakotas combined: enough for a minyan but the bagels are gonna be in the freezer case. Barely. South Dakota has the fewest Jews of any state. FWIW, I have been working on my family tree since late in 1977. ND is the only state that does not appear currently among over 50,000 people, all Jewish or of Jewish ancestry besides forby ursusminor - Hockey
Re: PWR - 2 years ago
Dafatone PWR is practically just RPI. RPI is a function of win%, opponent's win%, and opponent's opponent's win%. With some adjustments for home and away games, RPI doesn't care who you beat, just your record. So the difference between flipping one game or another is minimal. Frankly, the best thing a team can do is play more road games than home games. The home/away adjustment is way too mby ursusminor - Hockey
Re: PWR - 2 years ago
Trotsky Edit: without St. Lawrence. The top of SLU's logo shows just above Colgate's which is where it should be. They made all of the logos have the same width, so if one team with a logo that has more vertical extent than horizontal is one place above one whose logo has more vertical extent than horizontal, it can be hidden.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2023 and beyond - 2 years ago
Al DeFlorio Here's one well "beyond:" It's amazing how many who have commented on that video in the last few weeks obviously did not bother to check on where Wahlstrom is now. He probably won't become a superstar in the NHL, but he should stick around for a decade or so. He might have have become an All American in the NCAA had he not been one-and-done at BC.by ursusminor - Hockey

Both RPI and DC have postponed their games for the upcoming weekend. Thus, the Harvard-Union game is the only one of the 4 games in the RPI and Union vs. Dartmouth and Harvard set currently scheduled.by ursusminor - Hockey

Trotsky Robert Morris seems to have failed in killing it's hockey program, at least for now. No word on the other two ghosts. Assuming that you mean UAH and UAA, UAA is also supposedly coming back. If you are referring to Penn and Columbia, I doubt it. (Why does this forum still think that I am using DSL? I have been on FIOS for 3 or 4 years.)by ursusminor - Hockey

And on Saturday RPI lost to previously 1-12 Alaska whose only other win was vs. Clarkson. After a couple of days of sightseeing, the 'Tute will have two more chances to play on an Olympic ice sheet prior to the ECAC Final 4 which they have not been at since it left Lake Placid for Atlantic City. When did Cornell start using uniforms with the inscription "Huskies"? WHAT. A. GAME!!@ClarksonMHockey tie it up with less than two seconds remaining, and win the shootout to take a big 2️⃣ league points at home. Tsekos with the game-tying goal. Re: "Proposed" future ECAC - 2 years ago
upprdeck it is interesting they allow clarkson/rpi to give them but dont allow a school to offer them like RIT when they jump to D1 when the goal is really to create more D1 hockey. Over a decade ago, NCAA D-III wanted to stop allowing schools which played up to award scholarships in the sport in which they played up. The largest group which were affected played up in hockey, but there were otby ursusminor - Hockey

upprdeck ursusminor FWIW, RIT plays in the D-III Liberty League as do Clarkson,, RPI, SLU, and Union. does it really matter since its really about the hockey and they play D1 in that? No. That is why I wrote "FWIW". I figured there were some here who did not know that. Re: Opponents and Others, 2021-22 - 2 years ago
FWIW, the attendance for NU @ RPI was 32. That's with school being on break and no visitors allowed. On the hopefully bright side, RPI has chosen a new President to replace Shirley next summer, namely Martin Schmidt (RPI '81) who is currently Provost at MIT. He asked about the hockey team in discussion with student members of the selection committee.by ursusminor - Hockey

Re: "Proposed" future ECAC - 2 years ago
Although I can't imagine the ECAC having any interest in adding a team, LIU has played Princeton and RPI twice each already and have two each against QU and Brown remaining. Then again their rink last weekend against RPI was more of a morgue than RPI's has been this year. They play in the Islanders' practice rink.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Brown Game Thread - 2 years ago
marty arugula Why doesn’t this effect (affect?) Harvard? Is it really better to lose to a good team (Northeastern, Clarkson) than beat a bad one? From what was mentioned here a few weeks ago we only get credit for 55% of a win when the win occurs in overtime. 3 of Cornell's wins are discounted in this way in the national computer ranking. How about QPutz tonight? As they won a shootout isby ursusminor - Hockey
