Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: 1970-71 Crew Team - 2 months ago
George64 The book, Boys in the Boat, was great, the documentary was great, the movie should be terrific, too. As I recall, Cornell was prominently mentioned in the book, so we should get a mention in the movie. Finally saw the movie, not nearly as good as the book, so I decided to reread it. Found this passage — Washington had become a serious contender in crew on the West Coast . . . if noby George64 - Other Sports

Nooooo! I think she’s been terrific! Note to Ryan Lombardi - She communicates well! She’s made us aware that there’s more to Cornell athletics than just hockey, lacrosse and wrestling. Give her a big raise! And while you’re at it, give Brian Earl one, too!by George64 - Other Sports

George64 upprdeck I was reading a book on Ty Cobb and there is a mention that in 1900-01 a pro baseball coach drove a car into into an unlit Cornell Swimming pool. Wonder where that would have been at the time if its true. Ask unofficial Cornell historian Corey Earle ‘07, cre8@cornell.edu. Perhaps the Old Armory, razby George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

upprdeck if only cornell had a way to present maps of the campus over the years.. Someday someone will invent that ability I suppose. Check out The Cornell Campus by Kermit Parsons, 1968.by George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: NIL - 2 months ago
Interesting article in today’s Rochester D&C. Arguably, college athletes, or any student with some notoriety, should be able to benefit through NIL, but should the university abet the practice? The article points out that it might affect even minor sports. How will this work out for the Ivies in this era of free agency? How will a free oil change and tune-up from Cutting Motors competeby George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

Excellent webinar about Cornell Tech. Dean/Vice Provost Morrisett strikes me as an outstanding academic and administrator. Nice to see the connectivity linking Cornell, Cornell Tech and Weill Cornell — One Cornell.by George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

Iceberg If they're going to eject Psenicka for the softest brushby contact ever, I can't imagine that they don't do anything for actual significant head contact here But they do nothing. Terrible officiating, it’s no wonder they lost control of the game.by George64 - Hockey

George64 Swampy From "The Poison Ivy in the Ivy League," Sports Illustrated, January 2, 1967: Harkness' boys at RPI tended to be slower than a lot of other teams, and it seemed that whenever a really fast-skating team came up to Troy the arena would get terribly warm, so warm that the ice often became soft and slushy. At RPI they said it was probably only coincidencehockey barnsby George64 - Hockey

George64 George64 Trotsky She could have said "freedom of expression means what it says, asshole" and walked out. But she equivocated like every mealy-mouthed corporate-academic President or Provost of the last 30 years would, and she wrote her own death sentence. Good riddance. Trotsky So did roller derby. Alive and well. I was privileged to see flat track roller derby in Tucson. Those women are outstanding, and the culture is boisterous and rebellious and delightful. If you’re in Ithaca when we’re playing in the quarter-final NCAA men’s hockey game on March 16, you can catch the Ithaca SufferJets in the late afternoon. Tickets still available.by George64 - Hockey

Dafatone George64 billhoward What a depressing finish, to wit being outshot in regulation and still be one lucky shot away from a 3-2 regulation win, then getting out-possessioned in the 3x3 OT then losing the shootout without getting even one goal. Mr. Niss I cannot believe Chris Manon didn't have an opportunity at a more prominent program. I can't recall us ever having a player with his athletic ability. Not only is he a terrific player, but he seems to thoroughly enjoys himself. His enthusiasm is infectious, sort of the Jack O’Leary of the hardwood.by George64 - Other Sports

David Harding The NCAA rule book does not have any objective criteria. The cynic that I am, leads me to believe that rink operators may adjust the ice quality to offset the skating characteristics of the visiting team. In baseball, the infield grass is cut to favor the home team, if you bunt a lot, keep it long.by George64 - Hockey

George64 I’m curious, prior to this silliness, what percent of regular season games ended in a tie? I still hope someone can answer my question, but in the meantime, in the Lynah Rink era, Cornell has gone 1133-643-149, so only 7.74 percent of all games have resulted in ties. These data, however, include post-season playoffs, so the regular season percentage should be somewhat higher. On theby George64 - Hockey

Mr. Niss I did not know that AK Okereke was a walk-on. I didn't know that walk-on was even still a thing except for a kid to sit at the end of the bench, get a few minutes in the last game of the year, score and have the place go nuts. Wow. As I recall, back in the Donahue era, Louis Dale was a walk-on. Whittman was under-recruited because of an injury his senior year and Jeff Foote transfeby George64 - Other Sports
