Since we've got a few weeks between games, I thought I would share some details from an article (paywall) about the Michigan State hockey team which was published by The Athletic last month, and then reprinted on the front page of Sports Monday in today's NY Times. This part of the article is about Red Savage, a MSU player who was a fourth-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings and whose father hadby dbilmes - Hockey

Seger didn't score a goal for us at MSG, but he won two crucial faceoffs while we were killing off the 38-second 5-on-3. The first time he won the faceoff to start the penalty, but we failed to clear the zone and BU got off a shot which deflected out of play. Seger won the ensuing faceoff, and this time we were able to clear the zone, making it much easier for us to kill the remainder of the two-by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Women 2023-24 - 22 days ago
I just listened to the Big Red Sports Network podcast interview with freshman goalie Annelies Bergmann. She's quite a story. She grew up playing hockey mostly only against boys, and this past April she became the only woman to play in a men's junior hockey game at the Tier I or II level in the U.S. She also said she committed to Cornell when she was in 7th grade! Bergmann said Cornell's coachinby dbilmes - Hockey

chimpfood Penn beats Villanova, stop sleeping on the Ivy League. Also, how in the world did Penn manage to get Villanova and Kentucky to come to their house this year? I would kill to just get Syracuse to come to Newman once. According to Wikipedia, the Palestra is "often called the Cathedral of College Basketball." I doubt anyone has ever used those words to describe Newman Arena.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Back in the 1970s, I was taking an Advertising course in what was then called the Communication Arts Department. For my final project, I created an advertising campaign to increase attendance at Ivy League football games. Low attendance at games was a fact back then and that hasn't changed over the ensuing decades. Having lived in Connecticut now for over 40 years, Yale used to get larger crowdby dbilmes - Other Sports

I know that Cornell last year was among the leaders in the fewest SOG allowed per game. I was thinking about this Friday night when I compared the total SOG in the Cornell-Yale game to the SOG totals in the other ECAC games. Here's the breakdown for the weekend. Friday night games Cornell-Yale 43 Q-Dartmouth 70 RPI-Union 63 Colgate-Brown 64 Princeton-Harvard 64 Average for other fourby dbilmes - Hockey

Personally, I have never tried Telegram or Discord and have no desire to do so. I'm going to be a luddite and stick with ELynah. I enjoy going on between periods to see what people are saying about the game. If eLynah members branch out into other platforms, that's obviously their choice. But hopefully enough of us will stay on ELynah to make it still an enjoyable and informative forum to discussby dbilmes - Hockey

abmarks RichH Are the Yalie announcers on ESPN+ having a competition to see how many inaccuracies the can sneak in? Between pronouncing Seger “See-Jer” and how Cornell’s head coach was a goaltender, it been hammering on my inner fact-checker. The one that got me was when "Costanza".for in alone and hit the pipe. Just got back from the rink. This was an ugly win. Yale dominated the second period, even though we scored the only goal of the period. We did a great job all night blocking shots, though (19-3 advantage), making Shane's job easier. The PK had to be called upon too many times, but did a great job, especially of mucking the puck along the boards in the Yale for lengthy stretches. We got lucky on tby dbilmes - Hockey

Swampy I'm planning to attend the game at Yale and have some questions: Where are the best seats for visitors? The Yale website offers parking, apparently for an extra fee. Is this really necessary, or is free parking readily available nearby? Is there anythng else one should know about attending the game at Yale? Street parking in the neighborhood around the hockey rink used to be free at nby dbilmes - Hockey

I don't know why we are having this discussion, since according to the Cornell Athletics Department there were no unsold tickets for the opening weekend. "Senior forward Gabriel Seger and junior goaltender Ian Shane have both been recognized by ECAC Hockey for their performances in the Big Red's sweep of No. 11-ranked Minnesota Duluth last weekend in front of a pair of over-capacity crowdsby dbilmes - Hockey

With two weeks remaining, four teams are tied for first in the Ivies with 2-1-2 records. Harvard, Penn and Yale are tied with us for the lead. We host Yale this week and play last-place Columbia to finish the regular season.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Cornell field hockey 2023 season - 6 weeks ago
The field hockey team deserves some kudos. It has won 10 of its last 11 games, and has already clinched a spot in the inaugural Ivy tournament. Cornell is tied with Penn for second place in the Ivies with a 4-1 record, and can clinch a share of the title and the top seed in the league tournament with a win at Harvard on Saturday. Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - new Union rink? - 6 weeks ago
Trotsky Isn't the "Vampire Squid of the Week" Q facility well off campus, too? Q's rink is on its York Hill Campus. When the rink was first opened, there wasn't anything else there. But now that campus -- which is on top of a hill as those of us who have gone to games there know -- includes a student center and three dorms for upperclass students. So yes, the facility is off Q's mainby dbilmes - Hockey

I'm sure the president of the university spends a lot of time flying around the country and the world hitting up alums to make big donations to Cornell. I would hate to think that whether someone donates to Cornell or not is based upon whether they see the president at Homecoming.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Season Tickets (now with booze?) - 2 months ago
CAS As I wrote before, last year Cornell hockey still had the highest average attendance of any ECAC school & the second highest percentage of capacity (behind only Quinnipiac, whose rink has 900 fewer seats). Student attendance was outstanding. The Quinnipiac attendance figures are misleading. I have been to a number of games there over the years, mainly against Cornell, which were listed aby dbilmes - Hockey

Penney is this year's captain, with Seger and O'Leary as assistant captains. The last captain who wasn't a senior was Morgan Barron in 2019-20. Let's hope this year's team has similar success!by dbilmes - Hockey

scoop85 Great game story from the Daily Orange As a former sports editor of The Cornell Sun, it pains me to say this, but the quality of this story is better than any sports story I've seen in the Sun in years. The Syracuse sportswriter actually went to an away game in person, had some good tactical details from the game, and had pertinent quotes both from the coach and one of the players.
