Re: Self-promotion - podcast stuff - 13 days ago
scoop85 ugarte Big week for guesting on podcasts: 1: On I Hate Bill Maher, a podcast that looks back at the start of Real Time, which sucks. 2: On Opening Arguments, a legal podcast, talking about Loper Bright and the end of Chevron deference. 3: On Sox Populi, talking about the Pirates as we head to Chicago to start a series against the White Sox. dbilmes BearLover The only opponents that would sell enough tickets to make a profit are the Big 10 schools, BU, BC, maybe a few other Hockey East schools like UConn, and North Dakota. If I recall correctly, UConn did not draw a big crowd to MSG a few years ago. The only way UConn fans show up is to tell them it’s a basketball game or something with former Whalers. BearLover Trotsky MTU, LSSU, and NMU are also great choices. Wait, why do we want schools who will bring approximately zero fans? More seats for Cornell fans? So now you don’t want to dominate everything?by RichH - Hockey
Re: 2024-25 MEN'S SCHEDULE - 4 weeks ago
Trotsky Since MSG 2024 is a closely guarded secret, who is your dream opponent? Mine are Denver, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. And no, obviously, none of them will ever come. Wisconsin, Michigan Tech, & Maine.by RichH - Hockey

sah67 ACM sah67 With the Panthers winning the Cup last night, I was reminded that Braden Birch works for them as their "Director of Hockey Operations & Salary Cap Management." Don't think that earns him any time with the Cup though Happy to be proven wrong! All those spreadsheet skills paying dividends! No, that’s neat. He was probably in the box with Zito. Swampy At another school, an alum is hired to be the HC in waiting, replacing the current HC after the 2024-5 season. Also see here, where the comparison is more in depth. If you had to fabricate a name of a generic Notre Dame male athlete for your improv class, nothing you could conjure up would be as spot-on as "Brock Sheahan."by RichH - Hockey
Re: Mike Schafer retiring 2025 - 5 weeks ago
Troyfan Dafatone Casey's done a lot with a team that I can't imagine is easy to recruit for. And good for Coach Schafer. When Jones went to Clarkson some kids he had recruited for Cornell must have gone with him. The following year, maybe 2, must have Mike's worst. I saw them play RIT, I believe, in a Christmas tournament in Albany and get shut out, 4-0. They were awful. Clarkson's hadby RichH - Hockey
Re: Mike Schafer retiring 2025 - 5 weeks ago
David Harding Swampy The university should consider retiring Mike's jersey number, not because of his HOF achievements in the NHL but because of his extraordinary, lifelong contribution to Cornell Hockey. Totally agree on retiring his jersey number. They probably ought to let Jack O'Brien play his last two years trying to live up to the Schafer standard, then retire #3. Un-retire thby RichH - Hockey
Re: NCAA ruling impact on hockey - 8 weeks ago
BearLover Troyfan BearLover Troyfan Cutting sports that aren't profitable might prove to be a backdoor benefit for Cornell. The $$$ to compete in football and basketball might get to be so huge that programs like Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin will be forced to choose between them and minor sports. Even schools like Minnesota-Duluth and Denver might get squeezed. Women's sports will have tby RichH - Hockey

Neat. Nice story. A little research reveals that Brown, Cornell, and Dartmouth are the three that don’t sponsor a varsity men’s team at this point. Brown dropped it after 2020, Cornell after 1993. Like football, our three Ivy championships are shared championships and a long time ago. Only Dartmouth doesn’t sponsor a women’s team.by RichH - Other Sports
Re: Pollack Out - 2 months ago
After her retirement becomes official, 3/8 Ivy presidents will have the “interim” label, and who knows what will happen at Columbia. It’s a fun time to be in the pool of candidates at that level. Maybe this is our chance to increase the Ivy game limit & hockey season start time!by RichH - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Bye-bye Ben - 2 months ago
Trotsky RichH Swampy Also, since Ben oversaw recruiting, have any recruits coming in 2024 changed their minds? What about those lined up for 2025 or 2026? My guess is that recruits are typically sold on the program and the head coach, not the recruiter/associate coach. I seem to remember that Casey was also the lead on the recruiting effort, so we already have a sample of this exact scenaby RichH - Hockey

CU2007] I had the same complaint and thought, but was told the fireworks are funded by a private donation specifically for that use. I have no way of knowing if this is true. Image if that private entity put that money towards a donation pool to renovate Schoellkopf to modern standards rather than a mass of gunpowder that goes up in smoke. There used to be a homecoming parade, too. Surelby RichH - Other Sports

billhoward RichH billhoward We still have the Ivies' best homecoming fireworks. Friday 9/27 before the Yale game. Maybe I'll stream The Miracle Worker to get in a positive mood. Sorry, but I just don't understand the fireworks show. I've gone to a lot of homecoming weekends, and I've never had a desire to go to that. Maybe save the money they literally set on fire and save it for a Schoellkopf reby RichH - Other Sports

billhoward We lost 17-16 to Denver Feb, 4. That was Denver's fourth game, our first. Plus it was on the road. We beat Ohio state March 2, their sixth game, our fourth. By the time we lost 12-11 hosting Penn State, it was our seventh game, their ninth, not much difference, and we almost made up the entire 9-4 deficit after three There are so many facts wrong in this paragraph, I don’t know wheby RichH - Other Sports
Re: Men's lax: CU-Notre Dame Sunday 4/14/24 - 3 months ago
rss77 Goldstein had a bit of a rough game with a couple of turnovers-we forget this is only his 5th or 6th game. Also Notre Dame seemed to be winning groundballs late in game-but Cornell proved they belong up there with the best. Give him credit for that sharp-angle goal coming from behind the cage to tie the game at 13(?). That was amazing.by RichH - Other Sports

Trotsky Scersk '97Both teams’ fans suck and are reviled by their respective conferences. You know who else's fans are hated in their conference? I've always liked Denver. For me the ideal F4 would be us, Denver, BU, and Wisco. That’s a lot of red.by RichH - Hockey

But ... 2) Yeah, you're right. 3) His bio notes Richter played 666 games in the NHL so it could have been the Mark of the Best Award. He won second place in the Vezina Trophy in his second year. He only played two years at Wisconsin, 33-25-1. Let's see, Ken Dryden went 76-4-1 at Cornell. Heby RichH - Hockey
Re: 2024 Awards - All-America Shane 2nd team - 3 months ago
Mike Richter wouldn’t have won the Mike Richter award. The highest accolade he achieved in college was 2nd team WCHA and he bailed for the pros after two decent but non-spectacular years. Yes, he had a HOF pro career, and that’s super. But why does everyone just accept that the best collegiate performance bears that name? I know, I know. I’ve been on this soapbox before. But can’t we haveby RichH - Hockey
