Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Season Post-Mortem - 16 years ago
It's hard to understand 3 losses to Harvard in one season when the skill level on the 2 teams seems approx the same. Seems like Donato has Schafer's number at least for now. For the Red, the talent is there and the defense is mostly there. To me, it seems the team is missing a top notch goalie (I like Scrivens but I don't think he's Lenny, McKee, or even Underhill) and finishers. On the finisby redredux - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
If it wasn't Milo's choice not to be on the team anymore, then he comes back only if he wants to and Schafer reverses course on a recent decision -- seems unlikely. Given Milo's success on the diamond, it's also unlikely he's going to decide now to give that up. The trend of players leaving early or not being asked back for whatever reason is a bit disturbing. I'd expect it if we were realistiby redredux - Hockey
Re: ...Milo... - 17 years ago
Does anyone have any solid information on why Milo won't be playing hockey for the Big Red anymore? Very surprised he won't be playing anymore given the hype he came in with and the amount he played as a freshman. Have there been Red hockey players who played another varsity sport at Cornell?by redredux - Hockey
Re: Harvard 2 @ Cornell 3 postgame thread (11/10/06) - 17 years ago
If Fontas and Scali aren't close to Milo, Gallagher, and Romano, then fine but if they are then I'd favor giving at least one of them some game time. I thought last night, the Red could have used some more gritty players and from what I gather that's what Fontas and Scali would bring to the table. Also, maybe Fontas could win some faceoffs. I don't think sitting one of the other guys for a gamby redredux - Hockey
Re: Harvard 2 @ Cornell 3 postgame thread (11/10/06) - 17 years ago
Great, lucky win. In the USCHO recap, Donato said the Red played a "bend but don't break" style for most of the game. That seems accurate if not a bit generous. I credit the win in large part to Troy Davenport. He looked great to me. I also thought the CSTV guys were giving Richter too much credit -- "playing like an upperclassman" blah blah blah. He didn't face many touby redredux - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Wisconsin postgame thread (post-season thread?) NCAA semifinal 2006 - 18 years ago
billhoward This overtime-loss-in-the-Midwest-Regional-to-a-Local-Team schtick is getting kind of old after two years. So True. Hail to McKee. That was an incredible display.by redredux - Hockey

Re: Cornell-Harvard ECAC title post-game thread - 18 years ago
dbilmesI agree with all of the comments on this post so far. However, the key play in this game was the power-play goal Harvard scored in the final minute of the second period. We had momentum on our side, having scored two goals to cut Harvard's lead to 3-2. You had the feeling that if we came out for the third period only down by one goal, after such a dreadful start, that we had a good shot atby redredux - Hockey
Re: 2006 Pairwise Comparisons Projections: the Final Stretch! - 18 years ago
Here's the next paragraph: Though not in its stated list of guidelines, the committee has made a concerted effort in the two years the 16-team field has existed to maintain a strict bracket. In other words, teams are given overall seed numbers, 1-16. The brackets are arranged 1-6-8-9, 2-15-7-10, 3-14-6-11, 4-13-5-12. Adjustments are then made for factors such as avoiding intra-conference matchby redredux - Hockey
Re: 2006 Pairwise Comparisons Projections: the Final Stretch! - 18 years ago
I don't think they try to keep teams closest to their home brackets unless the teams are No. 1 seeds. Seeds 5-16 are sent to the necessary regional so that 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc. This is the formula except when intraconference first round matchups get in the way.by redredux - Hockey

ECAC Semis: best opponent PWR/best opponent to win - 18 years ago
The Red are 4-1-1 against the possible semis opponents. All tough teams, though. From PWR perspective, I'm assuming Harvard or SLU would be the best teams to play. From a just win perspective, it's hard to say. Colgate hasn't seemed that strong down the stretch but they usually play their best against Cornell. Plus, they'd have even more incentive to get up for their biggest rival giveby redredux - Hockey
Re: clarkson @ cornell, ecachl second round chatter - 18 years ago
oceanst41I think the best odds for Cornell winning in Albany rests on playing Clarkson this weekend (obviously since we have to win to move on I know). The point is rather than having an opponent Cornell knows it can and should beat like say QU, Cornell has a tough series instead. This series is by no means an afterthought on the way to Albany, so the team will be more mentally prepared than perhby redredux - Hockey

Ah yes, I was trying to forget about that. I didn't recall that Harvard was the 3 seed that year.by redredux - Hockey

Re: Recruits 2006: The New Thread - 18 years ago
That second D recruit for next year seems like a necessity unless Schafer knows O'Byrne and Pokulok aren't leaving. I noticed there's a D from the Notre Dame Hounds (Luke Brisebois) still unaccounted for.by redredux - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2006: The New Thread - 18 years ago
Anyone know anything about the Crimson's new goalie recruit -- Kyle Richter? He plays in the same league as Scrivens. With Daigneau graduating and his backups not being too stellar, I'd expect Richter to see playing time next year. Just wondering if anyone who follows the recruiting scene closely has any scoop on him.by redredux - Hockey
Who do we want to face? - 18 years ago
I kind of like the Cornell/Union matchup. I'd rather host Union than Clarkson or RPI. I know they beat us at Lynah once but I liked what I saw from the Red last night. Mayotte is good but besides him Union doesn't seem too scary. Clarkson and RPI have more skilled players, I think. I like Cornell's chances in a 2 of 3 series at home against a grind it out team like Union. Plus, we'd have thby redredux - Hockey
Re: 2005-2006 PWR - 18 years ago
Aside from having to travel to GB, our draw right now in the NCAAs is pretty good. UNO, and with a win, a Wisconsin team that's struggling. Who knows what the eventual draw will be, but this one isn't so bad. Also, good to see Harvard finally sent West.by redredux - Hockey
Re: Sucks Game Thread 2/18/06 - 18 years ago
Disappointing loss as the up and down trend continues. I thought Cornell outplayed Harvard until Harvard scored to tie it at 1. It was one of those games where we should have been up by more than 1 goal when Harvard scored its first. I think Harvard was really doubting its ability to win until they scored their first, which was kind of a fluky goal. That second Harvard goal was well executedby redredux - Hockey
O'Byrne - 18 years ago
The CSTV guys made a lot of mistakes tonight so I'm not taking their statement that O'B is out for the season as truth. Any confirmation of O'B being done for the year? If it is true, that's a big blow for the stretch run, especially since Pokulok still seems to be less than 100%.by redredux - Hockey

Re: Recruits 2006: The New Thread - 18 years ago
I can't remember where but I'm pretty sure McKee has said he's not too fond of Ithaca being from Texas and all. I would be surprised if he leaves but who knows. What seems more likely is that O'Byrne and Pokulok leave. That combined with McKee leaving and Gleed gradutaing obviously would be tough for the D to take. But even if just the "towers" and Gleed leave, we'd have 5 dmen plby redredux - Hockey
Re: RPI 1 @ Cornell 1 11/19 Postgame - 18 years ago
I was looking at the box scores and saw Glover sat Fri and Sat. Was he benched or was there any injury involved? Sorry if this has been covered -- I didn't have time to read all the posts. I can't believe he deserved to sit without an injury. We need his size in there to help regain the typical Cornell physical game. Also, to me, he's looked to be the most solid D man all season.by redredux - Hockey
NHL - 18 years ago
I tend to limit my internet hockey reading to college hockey and NHL stories about former college players. Can someone who follows the NHL more closely recommend good NHL writers at espn.com or si.com or elsewhere? What about NHL blogs -- any good ones? Thanks.by redredux - Hockey
Re: Which loss was more painful? (Better Red than Crimson) - 19 years ago
This one hurts a lot right now. Losing in OT is tough. Especially when you're one goal from the frozen four and you've come so close to beating the huge odds on Minnesota's home ice. In the frozen four after Palahicky's goal was called back, the wheels kind of fell off so losing was sort of expected. Today at about the 10 minute mark of the third period when we finally started playing Red hocby redredux - Hockey
Ice Surface - 19 years ago
Does anyone know how much practice time the Red will have on the larger ice surface? Is there a rink closer than Lake Placid with the olympic sheet? A couple of other things: I watched some of the OSU/Mich game from last weekend. OSU played close with Michigan. This OSU team is quite different from the slow team many of us saw lose 1-0 to BC in Providence a couple of years ago. I'by redredux - Hockey
