Re: 2004-2005 Ticket Line Procedures - 20 years ago
It would be a mistake to limit each person to one ticket. Too many people have other things they must attend (for example, classes or, in my case one year, the LSAT in Syracuse). "One person, one ticket" should only be a fallback if there is a serious scalping problem. As for the line, in the late 80s, we slept outside Lynah (before the Fieldhouse was built), in a rough line, for a fby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Herb Brooks - 20 years ago
I'm assuming the hockey program will do something during the season to honor Mike Tallman (initials on sweater); I hope TPTB also do something to remember Herb Brooks, as should all NCAA hockey programs. The '80 gold medal did a lot to further the interests of NCAA hockey, showing that colleges can produce good hockey players.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Herb Brooks - 20 years ago
A tragic loss. Brooks' greatest achievement on the ice overshadows many of his other accomplishments as a coach, including the three NCAA titles (including one two years after taking over a last-place Minnesota team). His stint with the Rangers seemed disappointing but, in my mind, only because it didn't compare with the success on the Olympic level. I thought those "Smurf" teams werby CUlater - Hockey

Oh wait. MIT. Hockey Fora. Never gonna happen. Nevermind. Is that supposed to be an uncalled-for shot at Kyle?by CUlater - Hockey
Re: NHL Draft - 20 years ago
...why the Rangers have been going after (seemingly) a lot of Ivy players (besides the education)? How many draft picks have they spent on Ivy players? (I know of the two this year and Dominic Moore -- any others?)by CUlater - Hockey

Here's an article that has a little bit about Mark McCutcheon, with comments from his father.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Cup in Ithaca - possibly 7/11 - 20 years ago
I don't know if there will be an official (or unofficial) announcement (although considering the weekend is partly a benefit for Mike Tallman, there may be one), but I have heard that it is indeed happening, from someone who is friends with both Joe and Schafer. Richter had been working on a graduate degree during the summers, until he started dating his now-wife, who I believe was at Columbia at the time, so he transferred there. But once I saw him playing a pickup game at Lynah, with Joe and Casey Jones, among others.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk on TV post-Stanley - 20 years ago
Joe will only be 37 when the next season starts, had a decent year considering the middling status of the Devils as far as goals scored goes and is still one of the top faceoff men in the league. I haven't heard any talk about this possibly being his last season (unlike with Ken Daneyko); in fact, I've read articles speculating that he may want to go to Toronto next season, or possibly back to Dby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Recruits - 20 years ago
I have no idea how the rest of the league will be, but other than the .500 issue, Greg seems right IMHO (and his). In fact, I'd take his comment about defensive lapses further -- it could be a problem all year. This will be a fairly young team, with freshman and sophomore being asked to do a lot (and upperclassmen being asked to step up their roles), and the key to any good defensive team is diby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 20 years ago
Nieuwendyk went to the game at Princeton this year and I believe an article about the game mentioned that it was the first Cornell hockey game he had been to since he left school, for the obvious reason that the two seasons overlap and until the trade last season, he had been based far from Cornell's stomping grounds. Also he lives part of the offseason at his place on Cayuga Lake. The year Ithby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Higgins Signs With Montreal - 21 years ago
Hey maybe he made a verbal committment to Yale first, telling them that he'd stay for sure, and then went behind their backs and signed with Montreal. Doesn't that sound like something he'd do? That story about Higgins and Cornell is not true, as has been discussed on this board previously.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 21 years ago
Once the hitter is announced, it counts as a plate appearance. Whether he actually sees a pitch is not relevant. I'm interested to know if the rule that Adam described applies for a DH. In other words, until he actually gets announced as the hitter, has the DH "appeared" in the game? Based on Adam's wording, the answer seems to be "no" but you can make the argument that siby CUlater - Hockey

Oops. Further research shows that others have accomplished the feat. Re: Central Scouting Final Ranking - 21 years ago
By the way, what happened to the #4 goalie? The site says: Please Note: There are four (4) positions that have been left blank - they represent four (4) players that have not yet opted-in. As soon as their status changes, the RANKING will be revised and posted hereby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Central Scouting Final Ranking - 21 years ago
Where do you see that? I still can't find the final rankings. Link, please. Thanks. When you get to the rankings page, click on "Click here for .PDF files". That link contains the domestic skaters and goalies rankings as of May 13. International players to be posted at a later date.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Hockey East at it again - 21 years ago
What's killing me slowly is the 1-point-ot-loss that mars the N. It serves no purpose othan than make non-divisional games into exhibition games. In divisional games, teams still play both ends because they don't want to give up the extra point to a standings rival and you get good hockey, but in non-divisional games it becomes pond hockey with 8 guys with a forward mentality, lots of mistakes, nby CUlater - Hockey
Re: Hockey East at it again - 21 years ago
Not necessarily. If you think of baseball it's played like the home team plays it. I wouldn't be surprised to see it. Except that's MLB. When the Big East went to the 6-foul rule a number of years ago, I believe the NCAA said that for non-conference games, the NCAA 5-foul rule applied.by CUlater - Hockey

Re: And the accolades continue ... - 21 years ago
I think the NCAA has nothing to do with the Hobey, or with giving out any individual award in any of the team sports as a matter of fact. From the Hobey website: "The Award is controlled by a non-profit group known as the Hobey Baker Foundation." Thus, there can be multiple player of the year awards for college hockey. Greg could probably expand his TBRW awards -- all he'd need to dby CUlater - Hockey

This reminds me of losing Dave Pietramala as Lacrosse coach to his Alma Mater, Johns Hopkins after the 2000 season There's something of a difference between a program losing an assistant coach and a program losing a head coach, obviously.by CUlater - Hockey
Re: Mike Tallman '90 - 21 years ago
Thanks for your note RedFan. I think it's important for the Cornell community to support its own, much as BU did when Travis Roy was paralyzed a number of years ago. Given the numerous notes of support for Exter on this site and USCHO.com earlier this year, I would hope that enough people post here that a copy can be sent to the Tallman family, or that at least a few of the Faithful reach out tby CUlater - Hockey
[OT] Sarah Hughes to be an Eli - 21 years ago
I see that Sarah Hughes chose to attend Yale beginning next fall. From the newspaper stories, it sounds like Cornell wasn't even on her list.by CUlater - Hockey
