Re: [OT] New York State alcohol laws - 18 years ago
My birthday happens to be 1/2/67, so I remember this vividly. During my freshman year on 1/1/85 New York raised the drinking age to 19 (just one day before I turned 18). However, they grandfathered in everyone that had turned 18 the previous year (most of my friends). During my sophomore year, on 1/1/86 they raised the drinking age from 19 to 21 and DID NOT grandfather anyone in. Once agaiby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Nieuwy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 20 years ago
That, and his total dominance in the face-off circle against the Sabres ( ) in the Finals. If the Sabres can't even be in it, I'll guess I'll root for Joey even if it means rooting for the Leafs. (Just like rooting for Harvard at the NCAAs).by ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: LeNeveu: 10% more playing experience in the pros - 20 years ago
Only 10% more game experience, true. However, he practiced and was with the team for a 70+ game season (plus preseason NHL and AHL camps). It's a long and grueling year. That's the question pro scouts want to address: Can a College still put up numbers at the end of the season?by ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Why can't ecac teams score? - 20 years ago
While I agree that some of the difference in scoring between the WCHA and Hockey East and the ECAC and CCHA has to do with the ability to recruit offensive talent, I think much of it can be explained by the competetive balance in each conference. WCHA and Hockey East have the same top four teams every year with one "cinderella" that makes thing intersting. The same 2 or 3 bottom teamsby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Union No-Goal - 20 years ago
What struck me first about the picture is that there appears to be a layer of white vinyl (?) material covering the top of the goal underneath the netting. I don't remember ever seeing anything like that at a hockey game. Do the goals at Lynah have this? What's the point of the material? To catch drips from the goalie water bottle? Why is it there? It would certainly prevent the goal judge fby ericho_4511 - Hockey

Well if I would read other threads before posting I would see that this has already been covered Sorry.by ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: The Faithfull in the news - 20 years ago
The Faithful also get a sentence or two of recognition in the latest Sports Illustrated (Tom Brady on the cover). It's a story about Michigan and Michigan St. hockey, but we get credit (once again) for teaching the fans in Yost how to be "real" fans. FYI, if you look carefully at the crowd shot of the Michigan fans you can see a raised digit (the traditional "finger wave"by ericho_4511 - Hockey

Re: traveling to away games - calling all faithful - 20 years ago
I'll be at the Dartmouth game. It's only an hour from where I live. I'll be with two kids in the "family" section (great deal for 4 tix, 4 dogs, 4 sodas...only $40) which is only two sections over from the visitor section. See yaby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Schafer Suspended One Game - 20 years ago
If I have one complaint about Schafer's coaching, it's that he seems to complain and get on the refs A LOT during games. I think it has cost the team at times when the refs seem to be determined not to make a call that would be viewed (by the other team) as a direct response to his complaints. All of a sudden the whistle seems to be stuck in the ref's pocket and only the most egregious calls areby ericho_4511 - Hockey

Obviously you've never had the pleasure of Schaefer in the can Schafer = great coach Schaefer = great jingle, god awful beer Also whoever thought of having sushi and Schaefer together is Just my humble opinion.by ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Summertime fun - 21 years ago
Let me echo the sentiment for Intro to Hockey! It was great and you never know when an up and coming graduate assistant coach will be teaching the class. Yep, I took hockey from Coach Schafer! He seemed to have a good time and so did we. I even donned the goalie pads for a scrimmage. Let's just say that I am a great big sieve. . I concur with Keith. There's nothing better than playing hockey iby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Albany vs Placid - 22 years ago
I agree in general. But I don't think they discriminate against college hockey fans. They rip everyone off.....skiers, Empire State Games, summer tourists, etc.... After all, Lake Placid is a tourist trap town. Think Lake George with Olympic history..... Ericby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Albany vs Placid - 22 years ago
One possible reason that it would be good to have the ECAC's in Albany is to lose the "small time...EZAC" image. The "Big Three" conferences (if you will) all hold their tournaments in arenas: WCHA - St. Paul Excel Center, Milwaukee Bradley Center etc... CCHA - Detroit, Joe Loius Arena HE - Boston, Fleet Center Having the ECAC tournament in Lake Placid is a wonderfulby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
The NYS drinking age was raised from 18 to 19 effective Jan 1, 1985, but there was a grandfather clause. It was raised again from 19 to 21 effective Jan 1, 1986 without a grandfather clause (the federal government would withhold federal highway money from any state that did not comply with the 21 drinking age). How do I know this? My birthday is Jan 2, 1967. Therefore I missed legal drining ageby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: joe nieuwendyk - 22 years ago
I was at Cornell during his two (three?) years on the team. 1) It was clear that he was one of the best players in the ECAC and that he had more talent than 98% of the players on the ice. Back then there was A LOT more talent in the league. He had a number of excellent one on one moves that confounded MANY a defenseman. He had really great hands and could fly on his skates. Unfortunately, he diby ericho_4511 - Hockey
Re: The Great One's Great Mistake - 22 years ago
IMHO, I believe part of what Gretzky said is correct. Other countries are not rooting for them to win. Why? I think it's because the Canadians have for a long time felt that their teams had superior talent and that they somehow "deserve" to win because of that talent. Statements like: "A gold medal is our goal, anything less is huge dissapointment", show a measure of arroganby ericho_4511 - Hockey
