Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Clarkson at Cornell, 2/3 - 2 months ago
It’s really unfortunate that challenged reviews can only be used for alleged major penalties, because there’s a lot of situations where a missed call should have been a minor, but the refs are only able to rule it major or nothing.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Clarkson at Cornell, 2/3 - 2 months ago
This one’s shaping up to be a classic gongshowby shafer - Hockey
Re: Women 2023-24 - 2 months ago
I tell ya, these refs are letting EVERYTHING go today. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what constitutes a body check in women’s hockey. But they’ve also missed a bunch of interferences and crosschecks both ways. Really absurd lack of control that would never happen in the men’s game.by shafer - Hockey

Loss aversion bias. It explains everything all the time.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Dartmouth, 1/27 - 3 months ago
Because they are travel partners with Harvard, we are wired to always be a little less up for them or have a little less energy. Them’s the breaks.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Harvard, 1/26 - 3 months ago
scoop85 Always good for a chuckle when the announcer, in acknowledging the large Cornell contingent in a visiting rink, says “they always travel well from Ithaca.” As if there aren’t thousands of Cornell alumns within spitting distance of most of the rinks we play in. Lol, it’s total fantasy land stuff. “The Ithacans came in droves of stagecoaches and caravans across the hinterlands, picking upby shafer - Hockey

Band sounded GREAT tonight too. Extra fun performances of Time Warp and Schafer Beer Victory Song.by shafer - Hockey

It’s been too damn long since we’ve beaten the Donatoids. Let’s (f-ing) Go Red!by shafer - Hockey

Trotsky Harvard announcer on the left has a textbook HYP Shit Eating Grin. It's genuinely impressive. Indeed it is! Good observationby shafer - Hockey
Re: Women 2023-24 - 3 months ago
Almost done with the Colgate weekend, and they have thoroughly kicked our ass in both games. Really good team in Hamilton this year and we don’t nearly have the depth of talent to keep up.by shafer - Hockey

Re: Cornell vs Arizona State, 12/30 7:30 pm - 4 months ago
For the life of me, I don’t know why they resurfaced a stripe of ice for the shootout tonight but didn’t last night. They’ve got some really good ice on those rinks and we got to see full periods of high speed hockey.by shafer - Hockey

Man, Cornell athletics has been running the same promo ad for a zillion years now. “Now I’m in this place where I know how to balance my life, and it’s great.”by shafer - Hockey

There is nothing like the comforting sameness of Big Time Sports Atmospheres. Your tradition is my tradition!by shafer - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Quinnipiac , 11/17/23 - 5 months ago
Quinnipiac is a really good team once again. And trying to play from behind meant we were vulnerable to being pressed coming out of our zone. Goaltending was a little suspect tonight but we just got unzipped for most of those goals. In a lot of ways it was a better performance than last week against Harvard. We have yet to find the golden balance between game control and fluidity. That comes withby shafer - Hockey
Re: Fish N Fowl 11/11/23 - 5 months ago
About as frustrating as it gets tonight. No puck luck, decent oppo goalie, and a lack of offensive chemistry.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Fish N Fowl 11/11/23 - 5 months ago
Mullahy has been the better goalie, even as our shots haven’t tested him enough.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Fish N Fowl 11/11/23 - 5 months ago
One of our long term tendencies under Schafer is that we have to work hard for our goals and we hang onto the puck until there’s a clear opportunity and by the time we shoot it is well anticipated. It’s a bit too much thinking and not enough flow.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Fish N Fowl 11/11/23 - 5 months ago
Seems like Ted Donato has Schafer sussed outby shafer - Hockey
Re: Fish N Fowl 11/11/23 - 5 months ago
Every year, we hear the same admonishments about zero tolerance of fish, blah blah blah. At this point, it too is part of the tradition.by shafer - Hockey
Re: Women 2023-24 - 5 months ago
dag14 5-0 after 2. Harvard is just bad. It is wonderful. The wheels completely fell off the bus with Harvard women’s hockey with Katey Stone resigning in shame earlier this year and all kinds of hurt feelings in their locker room. It’s gonna take time to get that program competitive again.by shafer - Hockey
Re: 11/10 Dartmouth game thread - 5 months ago
Trotsky The extra horizontal stripe on the D sweaters is an embarrassment to Dartmouth hockey. And Dartmouth Hockey sucks.by shafer - Hockey
Re: University of Minnesota Duluth @ Cornell , 10/27/23 - 6 months ago
nmcorm83 Sorry folks, I meant this to reply to BearLovers post. Semi-rookie mistake... I live in Ann Arbor, one of the epicenters of the academic/athletic divide. Your bar about not being able to flunk out does not factor in things like this (with full positivity spin): The bar for athletes at a school like Michigan is totally different than at Cornell. Dafatone I just want to hear a few players sing the East Hill Car Wash jingle on whcu. Is that so wrong? THISby shafer - Hockey
Re: Ray Sawada - 1 year ago
Jesus, what terrible news. Sawada was a mainstay during my time on the hill. He played with a passion, a physical edge, and a beaming smile, which lit up the Lynah faithful. He embodied the trademark Cornell power forward role that typified our game in those days. Good for a big hit or a greasy goal, he was a terrific athlete while not necessarily being the most skilled player. I didn’t know himby shafer - Hockey

I can’t wait to see what the tidal rise feels like in our boatby shafer - Hockey
Re: 2023 Frozen Four - 1 year ago
Michigan was definitely not impressive in the semi, and the goalie Portillo was a liability. Quinnipiac is finally showing their potential, but I think Minnesota has just too many ways they can score, and they don’t need to rely on scoring first.by shafer - Hockey

Scersk '97 Wow, Michigan has zero defensive structure. And 27 frozen four berthsby shafer - Hockey
B1G first round dominance - 1 year ago
Minnesota 9-2 Canisius Ohio State 8-1 Harvard Penn State 8-0 Michigan Tech Michigan 11-1 Colgate (edit: final) What does it mean? Does it say anything about conference strength? If it does, how to explain it? I am flabbergasted.by shafer - Hockey
