Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Union @ Cornell - 1 year ago
I believe the 1968 Yale game was in New Haven, and was essentially Cornell’s revenge for breaking Cornell’s 7 year(?) winning streak at Lynch with a 3-2 win the prior year. This game ended up 18-1, Cornell.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: High schools and ages - 2 years ago
I hadn’t thought of the identity theft possibility. My assumption was that schools were embarrassed to reveal that they had freshmen hockey players who were the age of typical seniors.by hypotenuse - Hockey
High schools and ages - 2 years ago
Just curious. I am old enough to remember when hockey programs listed each player’s DOB and High School. Now it just says something like “last team.” I know it is now “market” for players to have a year or so of postgrad experience, but can anyone shed light on how this evolved? Would Dick Bertrand (as player, not coach) be out of place these days arriving at 24? Is hockey the only college sportby hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: 2018-19 Schedule - 6 years ago
Yes, three of them might show up— if they have kids at Cornell.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: 2018-19 Schedule - 6 years ago
I heard yesterday at the Cornell club in nyc that the msg game will be against the hedge fund which happens to operate a university located in Cambridge, mass. Hopefully the fulton fish market delivers.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: MSG This Year - 7 years ago
I read the other day that the UNH hockey coach is the highest salary of any NH state employee. I know it's a small state, and they're not much on football or basketball, but still....by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Red Hot Hockey (Screw BU!) - 8 years ago
Was it me, or did it seem that the BU band was playing all the time and that ours was all but silent? Not thrilled about the outcome, but it has really become a great Cornell event.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: What's going on with this year's team? - 8 years ago
I don't know, but it has sure been a pleasant surprise. Weren't we ranked below the Sisters of Mercy preseason (in hockey, not goodness).by hypotenuse - Hockey
This year/next year - 9 years ago
This year was just so disappointing. Next year, please hurry up and get here.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Free* Cornell Hockey Stuff - 9 years ago
Agree with idea of donating to the library. Two years ago, I gave them my program from the game at Harvard where the bums put the live chicken inadvertently elenbaas's goal.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Tonight's game v. Penn State - 9 years ago
I plead guilty to being a late arrival. We've gone to all the MSG games but one-- including the tournament in 1969 which Cornell won 9-0 and 7-2 v. RPI and Clarkson. Anyway, we've used the games as an excuse to meet friends for a great holiday dinner and they sometimes just run late. To quote another Cornellian, "So it goes."by hypotenuse - Hockey
Tonight's game v. Penn State - 9 years ago
There seems to be very little interest in this game. The person at the Cornell Club in NYC asked me if I needed additional ticks. For every other one of these games, she would go around and beg for extras. Does anyone know about this penn state team? I do know the school is sports crazy, having been there for football games.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: The Game - 30 years later - 10 years ago
I seem to remember that Brian cropper was the goalie for the undefeated season, no?by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Game 3 v. Q - 11 years ago
I wasn't thinking about losing. But if we have to lose I would prefer we not look like the Delta House at the Homecoming Parade-- even if we are on double-secret probation.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Game 3 v. Q - 11 years ago
Any thoughts about tonight? In a MLB game, the team that has suffered a blowout invariably seems to win the next day. But this isn't MLB, where the effectiveness of the pitcher is such a major component of the victory, and we did come into the Series the underdog. On the other hand, we beat them the first game (Friday seems so long ago!) and, although they beat us twice this season, the games werby hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Quarterfinals at Q - 11 years ago
The second game- Reminds me of the Cornell-BU game in 197? In which BU beat us 9-0 at Lynah. (BU was later forced to forfeit the game, which was Cornell's first loss at Lynah in years) like this one, the game just got away from us. Hopefully we can wake up tomorrow with no hangover and get out act together.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 12 years ago
as the person who started this thread, as of a week or two ago i was told they were still working on he game with Mich at MSG for thanksgiving weekend, but that it looked good. by the way, do you think there is any chance we will have played michigan before that?by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 12 years ago
Wow. I started this thread based on an actual conversation with an actual cornell administrator. It is amazing how it has morphed. Anywho, there is some financial risk to the schools with a low turnout, but i doubt they need to sell out to cover their nut. For cornell, there are all kinds of reasons to have a big NYC event, particularly now, with the tech center, cornell's profile in the cityby hypotenuse - Hockey
MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 12 years ago
I ran into one of the Cornell admin guys who told me that there are discussions with Michigan concerning a game on the Saturday after T-giving at Madison Square Garden for 2012. Has anyone else heard anything about this? It sounds great.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: The Sad Thread: Worst Losses in Cornell History - 13 years ago
The 9-0 loss to BU at Lynah, mentioned above, was truly a disaster. I think it broke a very long home unbeaten streak for Cornell-- I was then a junior, had attened every game and had never seen us lose at home. I believe the prior home loss had been to Yale-- a game also mentioned above in this thread as our only regular season loss that year, to which Cornell responded by beating Yale 18-1 in Nby hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: TRAVESTY in the WSJ - 13 years ago
If you read the on line comments to the WSJ article, many of them mention the glaring omission of Lynah-- including a number that identify themselves as non-Cornellians.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: The least disciplined team in the ECAC - 13 years ago
Benching Nicholls didn't help too much. Didn't he go right out against Union and get an early penalty which put us in a hole early?by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: cornell 1 - Quinnipiac - 0 end of first - 13 years ago
Iam an interested rader, but don't have much to contribute, so I stay quiet. It would be nice if we could pick up four points this weekend.by hypotenuse - Hockey

the play by play guy is moronic; the color guy keeps correcting or toning him down.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Has this ever happened? - 14 years ago
I believe so. In the late '60s/ early '70s Cornell's then freshman team would play Canadian Junior B teams. We would win by 10-15 goals but there would be one kid who would score two for the other guys. He would end up on the following year's freshman team.by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Good Luck, Cornell! - 15 years ago
By the way, what does Wisconsin think of Harvard (assuming you think of them at all?)by hypotenuse - Hockey
Re: Good Luck, Cornell! - 15 years ago
They did teach us the "sieve" cheer at that game, which was what, 1972 or 73? Anyway, I think that loss was Betrand's fault for leaving out Pettit and Westner until they couldn't stand up.by hypotenuse - Hockey

Re: Hockey no more popular now than last year - 15 years ago
As someone who was on campus 1969-73, I doubt the poll results would have been much different then, at least as to hockey. Football, with Ed Marinaro, would have been second, with Richie Moran's lacrosse team. Basketball would have been subsumed in"other". On the other hand, if "hatred of Nixon" had been a varsity sport, it might have challenged hockey.by hypotenuse - Hockey
