Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Men's Lax @ G'town - 20 years ago
A deeply disturbing performance, one of the worst I've seen in any Cornell sport at any time. The score -- and even the stats, as lopsided as they were -- don't capture the Hoyas' total domination. Cornell disorganized, undisciplined, error-prone, selfish, and lacking commitment. That makes it three years in a row of ineptitude against Georgetown ... and another nasty rainstorm, although at leastby Hillel - Hockey
Flat view? - 20 years ago
Thanks for your continued hard work on this site, Adriano. A quick question: How do you create a flat view of a selected topic? There used to be a "button" near the bottom of a selected thread, but I can't find it. It's likely I'm being blind and/or dense, so please forgive.by Hillel - Hockey
Re: [OT] Lax - it's a whole new ballgame... - 21 years ago
I think Matt's right about Cornell chances of getting an at-large bid. Doesn't look good. It seems that the Committee's first criterion is wins over teams that finish the season in the top 15 slots of the RPI rankings. I gather they'll be clustered into three groups, 1-5, 6-10, and 10-15, with different (and unspecified?) rewards for each level. Cornell has two wins over teams that have prayers oby Hillel - Hockey

Al wrote: "Apparently Hartofilis didn't play for Princeton--suspended for some kind of team rule violation. Two other Princeton starters were injured as was their face-off guy." All true, but it's also worth noting that Dartmouth played without its leading scorer, attackman Jamie Coffin (Greenwich, CT), one of the nation's best freshmen -- and source of about a fifth of Dartmouth's poiby Hillel - Hockey
Re: Midget - 21 years ago
As a devastated Caps fan, it was hard to watch Martin St. Louis shred my team. He scored three game-winning goals in the series, and his line accounted (I think) for nearly every single goal scored against the Caps in all six games. But the man is a joy to watch. We all knew he could score goals. But who knew he such a tough, gritty, hard-working little nut? I agree with Adam. He is, without a dby Hillel - Hockey
Western Canada - 21 years ago
It's fascinating to see how many kids from western Canada are represented: Four from British Columbia (LeNeveu, Gare, Hemingway, Fast); four from Alberta (Brown, McElhinney, Joseph, Stevenson); and one from Saskatchewan (Kunitz). That's more than a third of the total. By contrast, those wacky hockey hotbeds of Indiana, California, and Pennsylvania each have as many All-Americans as Ontario: one.by Hillel - Hockey
Earliest glass-scaling? - 21 years ago
My earliest memory of glass-scaling is from the 1984-5 season, after we beat Yale in the ECAC quarterfinals. You can't see the scaling, but you can see the end result in the 1985 yearbook.by Hillel - Hockey
Re: Cowbell Etiquette - 21 years ago
Glenn Gould didn’t smile while performing. Fyodor Chaliapin didn’t smile while performing. Joe Strummer didn’t smile while performing. Some art forms are about power, not joy. The cowbell is so much more than a cheer. It’s… it’s… Physics. Like “Let’s Go Red,” the cowbell should be the physical manifestation of a game’s momentum. I think Adriano has extraordinary sensitivity with his timinby Hillel - Hockey

Re: Any place to watch in DC? - 21 years ago
DC folks, If the whole ESPNZone thing doesn't work, I strongly recommend heading over to The Rock on 6th Street, NW (opposite the east side of the MCI Center). I gotta say, I have had nothing but bad experiences when it comes to watching college hockey at ESPNZone. The people at The Rock are MUCH more hockey-friendly. They've let me have a TV to watch much less significant Cornell games than thiby Hillel - Hockey
DirecTV primer for this weekend - 21 years ago
Here is a condensed directory of live broadcasts of this weekend's NCAA tournament games for folks who get DirecTV (with "Sports Pack". I repeat: for folks who get DirecTV only, not any other satellite service. This does not include tape-delayed or joined-in-progress broadcasts. ---------- East Regional (Providence) Cornell - Minnesota State-Mankato, Saturday 12:00, ESN/FSNN Bostonby Hillel - Hockey
Re: NCAA TV - 21 years ago
Update on watching Saturday's Cornell-MSUM game from Providence with DirecTV... This is what was posted on the MSUM Athletics site this morning: "All three games of the Eastern Regional will be carried live by Fox Sports Net North. Sean Grande will call the play-by-play and former WHA goaltender Cap Raeder will provide analysis." If that's true, then DirecTV viewers who subscribe to tby Hillel - Hockey
Re: NCAA TV - 21 years ago
More for DirecTV subscribers: It looks like Fox Sports Pittsburgh is the only network on DirecTV's "Sports Pack" that will be showing the East Regional Final in Providence on the 30th. Fox Sports Pittsburgh is on Channel 628. Unfortunately, the links above seem to suggest that nobody's broadcasting either of the two East Regional Semifinals from Providence on the 29th. Time correction? - 21 years ago
David (and other DC area folks), I may be wrong, but doesn't Friday's Cornell-Brown game (ECAC semifinal 1) begin at 3:30, not at 4:00? If so, I assume the good people at Fran O'Brien's will let us have a screen then.by Hillel - Hockey

Re: And now for something completely different... - 21 years ago
Al sez: "Now if we would just stop wearing Penn's colors." Yeah, what's up with the Chicago Bears blue? Do not like it, no sir. Don't get me wrong, it's not as bad as the horrifying jerseys of 1987-1988 (see below). But I don't like this trend we're seeing throughout the Athletics Department with all the black or blue trim. Al sez: "At the old Madison Square Garden, in pre-Zamboni days, the ice was resurfaced by several guys skating around in formation pushing tanks dripping hot water while others with squeegee things followed behind them." 3. Skating pep bands (now extinct?). I think Wisconsin and Brown were the last to practice this art form. For all I know, Wisconsin still does it. I think Brown gave it up a long time ago, but I could be wrong there, too. 2. The wee youth hockey players. Bring on the Mites! 1. Call me a fossil, but to me, there's nothing as soothing as watching a well-driven zamboni methodically clean the ice.by Hillel - Hockey

Tuesday's final score: Cornell 8 - Colgate 7 - 21 years ago
Final score on Tuesday afternoon at Schoellkopf: Cornell 8 - Colgate 7. A frightening game, as reported by Barry Leonard and company. Cornell didn't take the lead until about two minutes remained in the game. Colgate--one of the most improved DI programs in recent years--comes out aggressively builds a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Lots of unassisted goals, DeBlois torched on one aby Hillel - Hockey
Re: OT: Lax - 21 years ago
I'm not that worried about the offense. It'll never be explosive, but I think it will come around. Many new faces (Pittard, Boulukos, D'Arrigo); some people exploring different positions (Collins?); some injury rust (Nee, Greenhalgh, Rosenberger); some expected sophomore turbidity (Greenhalgh, Redd). What worries me is the face-off situation. Cornell may never see as formidable a presence at theby Hillel - Hockey
Re: Yale game in DC - 21 years ago
Judy, I've been there for previous CCW satellite events, but I won't be going to this one. Please forgive me: It was the promise of watching this game at home (and the upcoming playoffs) that got me to buy DirecTV's ridiculously overpriced "Sports Pack" add-on. I will, however, throw in a plug for the Crystal City Sports Pub. It's about as pleasant a representative of the sports bar spby Hillel - Hockey
Oops, wrong on that CU-JHU scrimmage - 21 years ago
Oops. It turns out that they DID play that Hopkins-Cornell scrimmage in Baltimore. We wuz spanked, according to a poster on the laxpower forum. A ten-goal deficit at halftime, it is reported. Oh well, at least they got their feet wet. Very wet.by Hillel - Hockey
[OT] Lacrosse preview - 21 years ago
I'm guessing Cornell's scheduled scrimmage with Johns Hopkins this morning at Homewood was cancelled. Intense rain and snow meltoff have brought flash flood warnings throughout the Chesapeake watershed. Too bad. That means there's been little prep time, as usual, before next weekend's tough non-conference opener against Georgetown (although at least this time the opponent will be rusty too, whby Hillel - Hockey
Pre-Harvard-game analysis - 21 years ago
On uscho.com's men's D-I message board, a veteran Harvard poster who goes by the handle of "Homer" posted an analysis of the Cornell-Harvard matchup that was so insightful that I just had to reproduce it here. Schaap addendum - 21 years ago
I forgot to add that Schaap the Elder was also a (not so great, forgive me) lacrosse goalie at Cornell. He had the pleasure of trying to stop Syracuse's Jim Brown, a subject he was always happy to talk about. His opposite number between the pipes for SU was none other than Chief Oren Lyons, wolf clan, Haudenosaunee (Onandaga, Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy).by Hillel - Hockey
