Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: PWR Rating is a JOKE - 19 years ago
I would say it's likely that SCSU takes at least one of two games against the Gophers. They typically play Minny tough and took them to OT earlier in the season when the Gophers were on fire. Also SCSU KOd CC on the road, and Minnesota has been struggling. So if UAA can pull off another upset tonight, the chances for CU to overtake them are decent.by Steve M - Hockey

Actual discussion of the Cornell game??? What's the matter with you Ari? This thread is only about other action around the league.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Weekly column by Ari - 19 years ago
I like the statement: And do not be surprised when you see one and perhaps even two ECACHL teams in the Frozen Four. Pretty bold Ari. It would be fun to put a link to the column on the USCHO message board and watch the flames from WCHA-land burn hot.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Beanpaht (pawt) - 19 years ago
Interesting. I went to High School in Canton, within the small overlap zone of ENE and Prov. accents. The "aw" O's were definitely all I evah heahd.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Elements of the Boston accent - 19 years ago
I didn't grow up there, but went to High School in a suburb of Boston. There are 3 main elements of the Boston accent, and a 4th that only a fraction of the people speak. 1. R dropping - Pahk the cah.... 2. R adding - We sawr you sawring wood 3. Consistent short O pronunciation - every short O is pronounced "aw", while most Americans pronounce some of them "ah" (Sockby Steve M - Hockey
Would the committee really do this? - 19 years ago
Adam, Please bear with me one last time on this. I would like to look at a hypothetical, but plausible scenario. Let's say the bonus adjusted PWRs end up as follows (not too far off where we are now except I left BU out to simplify it): 1. CC 2. BC 3. Denver 4. Minnesota 5. Cornell 6. Michigan 7. Wisconsin 8. UML 9. Harvard 10. NMU 11. UND 12. UNH 13. Colgate 14. OSU 15. Bimby Steve M - Hockey
Re: Quest for #1 seed - 19 years ago
Good response John. It's interesting how the average fan's projected brackets changed after a few of the Bracketology articles were published. When the PWR tables were first posted on USCHO (nice work on that BTW), many people were assembling brackets that considered travel and attendance, and didn't blindly follow "natural brackets" according to the 1-16 rankings. Cornell Hockey Jerseys - 19 years ago
ELynah used to have a link to a site where you could order numbered Cornell hockey jerseys. Are these no longer available? All the on-line retailers that I have found only sell them without numbers.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Pokulok done for season? - 19 years ago
Good points (no pun intended). How about Krantz? He's another freshman D-man that's shown good offensive skills.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Of Fandom, Then and Now - 19 years ago
Adam, Thank you very much for everything you have done to promote College Hockey. It's pretty cool how closely I can follow it again now, in spite of the fact that it gets almost zero coverage where I live. I especially loved the article you wrote about the Cornell-Harvard rivalry a few years ago. It was nice to find out that Lynah was still one of the toughest places for a visitor to playby Steve M - Hockey
Re: Pokulok done for season? - 19 years ago
My best wishes also to Sasha on his recovery. Hopefully he will be back for the NCAAs as our chances would be hurt quite a bit without one of our best defensemen. Until then we can at least take solace in: 1. This team has a lot of depth in blue-liners. 2. The last 6 games in the RS are all against the bottom half of the ECAC. 3. If Cornell does well in those games, we will still get anby Steve M - Hockey
Re: Of Fandom, Then and Now - 19 years ago
The internet and satellite dishes have made all of the difference. Even when I attended every Cornell home game in the 80's, I didn't have a clue what was going on outside the ECAC until the national championship game. Living on the West Coast since graduation meant that for many years I found out how Cornell was doing (or did) only via the Alumni news. Finding excellent web sites like eLynah,by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Numbers: ECAC RS Winning Streaks - 19 years ago
I would be more than satisfied if the winning streak were extended to 22 games.by Steve M - Hockey

Good article with detailed description of the goal. Thanks for the link Jim.by Steve M - Hockey

Re: Bracketology - 19 years ago
I've never said anything negative about Moy's other columns, I just think he's making a major assumption in his Bracketology columns. Just because he has done a lot of good work doesn't mean it's "uninformed and unwarranted" to disagree with him or express dislike for some of his columns.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Bracketology - 19 years ago
That's exactly my point. We need to wait and see if the committee is really going to risk poor attendance just to preserve a natural 1-16 bracket. Of course the seed "bands", host schools, and no intra-conf 1st round matchups are cast in stone. The natural 1-16 bracket, however, is not. Moy's articles practically assume it's a given and to hell with the attendance. It makes his colby Steve M - Hockey
Re: Bracketology - 19 years ago
The conventional wisdom, to which all of Moy's simplistic articles subscribe, assumes the committee will try to put together a perfect bracket as possible (e.g 2nd round #1 vs. #8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5) regardless of attendance ramifications. I don't think we really know what the committee will do in this regard, because they haven't yet had to choose between attendance and "bracket inby Steve M - Hockey
Re: How good is Moulson (hockey sabermetrics) - 19 years ago
How about one very simple stat: Moulson has 0.75 goals per game. Only 3 others in the NCAA have a better GPG, unless there are some other players that aren't on the USCHO leader board that I'm missing.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Cornell-SLU post-game thread - 19 years ago
LSSU up 1-0 midway thru the 2nd @ UAF. Colgate beat LSSU twice and they could get back to TUC status with a small winning steak.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Quest for #1 seed - 19 years ago
Beyond the last line change, getting a #1 seed means assuring that Cornell will not go to Minnesota for the regionals if Minny also stays a #1 seed. Also the 1st round opponent is weaker. Denver is in OT vs. UAA. Just as I post the above, DU wins in OT, bummer.by Steve M - Hockey
Classy Clarkson Fans - 19 years ago
One other Cornell alum and I joined a Clarkson alumni gathering to watch the game in Huntington Beach. The Clarkson fans invited us to join them at their table in front of the TV. After the game was over, Rich from Newport Beach picked up our tab for beer and wings because Cornell won the game. No, we didn't have a bet on the game, he and his group were just a very class act. Thanks again Riby Steve M - Hockey
Re: National TV Impressions - 19 years ago
It really doesn't make sense when you consider how good the team has been the past few years. The fans today should be even more rabid than in the 90's, or "back in my day" the 80s'.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: National TV Impressions - 19 years ago
We have the best hockey fans in the country so let's make sure that everyone watching knows it. A Wisconsin fan on USCHO doubted that a crowd of only 3 or 4 thousand could be intimidating. I hope he hears and understands tonight. Get there early so you can have your newspapers up and let everyone know what a BORING team Clarkson is.by Steve M - Hockey

Greg Berge Wrote: "You're never as good as you look when you win, or as a bad as you look when you lose." Re: What's it take to get an at large bid? - 19 years ago
Of course we can, it's just the law of averages, that there will probably be an upset somewhere. I would bet on 7-2-1 record as the midpoint of Cornell's likely performance on the remaining schedule. A split with Colgate, a tie @ SLU and one upset out of the 7 other games in which we're clearly favored to win.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: What's it take to get an at large bid? - 19 years ago
If we do win out, our RPI would probably improve by more than 0.01 or even by more than 0.015, and we would have a good shot at a #1 seed. The odds of winning out are slim, though, so I agree we're much more likely to be a #2, 3 or 4 seed.by Steve M - Hockey
Please post if you'll be there - 19 years ago
Is there anybody out there (Cornell hockey fans amongst the 3 million people in OC)? Anybody there? Anybody out there? Does anybody care? If so please post or send me a message that you'll be at the Fox Sports Grill at the Irvine Spectrum. If no one replies by an hour before game time, I'll assume I'm one in 3 million and will probably watch the game at Wings N Things at 18302 Beach Blvd.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Rumored Proposal to Save Season - 19 years ago
From your post and your handle I take it you're from Calgary. If so I can understand why you have such in depth hockey knowledge as a sophomore. From what I've read about Iginla, he seems like the type of guy who will probably want to stay in Calgary, given that he never asked for a trade in spite of all the Flames' lean years up until now.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: What's it take to get an at large bid? - 19 years ago
Since the ECAC has a pretty good NC record this year, winning 7 of 10 and going to Albany would most likely get Cornell an at large bid. The only way I could see it being insufficient is if Brown's RPI drops below 0.500 and all of our losses come against TUCs. Of course winning the ECAC tournament would be sweet.by Steve M - Hockey
