This 'no icing to get fresh legs' rule on even strength is not going to make more goals (probably) or even keep players on the ice longer... instead of tossing it down the ice, they're just gonna flop on it. Just land on it and get a whistle. No rule against that! And if you get called for a penalty, oh well. The 20% chance of bby Steve M - Hockey

Re: [OT] NCAA Revisits Native American Team Nicknames - 19 years ago
I agree with Kyle. While I can understand native Americans protesting perjorative nicknames such as the Redskins, they need to turn down their outrage over all the other native American team names. Schools chose names such as the Fighting Sioux, Seminoles, Warriors, Braves, etc. because they admired their battle skill, not because they're putting them down. Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
The correct application of the infield fly rule is to declare the batter out and the play effectively dead. If any runners go, the ump should simply instruct them to return to their bases.by Steve M - Hockey

Re: McKee "Hobey Hat Trick" - 19 years ago
I live in California and would have been there, as I was in Buffalo 2 years ago, had Cornell been playing in the Frozen Four. Glad you were able to make it. I hope to be in Milwaukee next year to see the Red win a National Championship and David McKee win the Hobey.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: McKee "Hobey Hat Trick" - 19 years ago
My guess is that the primary reason McKee and LeNevue didn't win is not bias against sophomores or goalies, but the voters are strongly weighing strength of schedule when looking at the stats. I think until the ECAC is able to further improve its interconference record, put multiple teams in the Frozen Four, and/or win another National Championship, it's going to be an uphill battle for one of oby Steve M - Hockey

I'm not griping, rather simply pointing out to those who doubt it matters that many players and coaches think it does.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: Will all this really matter? - 19 years ago
I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think the game was more fun to watch when there was more offense. If teams can realistically come back from 2 and 3 goal deficits, the games are a lot more interesting IMO.by Steve M - Hockey

Re: Icing Rule may apply during PKs - 19 years ago
I think one of the most boring things to watch in hockey is a successful penalty kill, in which a team is able to repeatedly ice the puck and 10-15 seconds elapse until the team on the power play can bring it back. If icing is called, penalty killers would rag the puck much more than they do now, which is fun to watch. Since power plays would be more effective, teams would be less likely to comby Steve M - Hockey

Re: road trip of a lifetime - 19 years ago
Great job by the band! You came through loud and clear on the TV broadcast to give the game a bit of Lynah atmosphere on the road. Plaing "The Victors" at the Ohio State game and "On Wisconsin" at the Minnesota game was priceless.by Steve M - Hockey

Hey DrunkenSquirrel. I briefly met either you or your buddy (there were only 2 of you wearing Gopher jerseys over with the Clarkson fans) on the way out of Lynah after going on the ice. Glad to hear you had a good time in Ithaca (The Hot Truck is always a good choice), and got a chance to hear just how much noise can be made by < 4,000 people. Re: Rink size, speed and passing - 19 years ago
Fair enough. I should have said "most likely" instead of hence. In any case as far as speed goes I do think Minn 2005 > UNH 2003, but I also think Cornell 2005 > Cornell 2003, even though the 2003 team was better overall.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: griping - 19 years ago
Everything you said in the post above is true and I do think the better team won. I never said, however, that Cornell would have won if the game were played on NHL ice. I only said they would have had a much better chance. There's a difference.by Steve M - Hockey
Re: griping - 19 years ago
Agreed and I am too. I'm proud of the team for almost pulling it out against the odds and refusing to gripe at all, even though it must be a lot more frustrating for them than it was for us. Bad draws come along every now and then for some and more often for others. Congrats to CC for managing to overcome theirs this year.by Steve M - Hockey
