Re: Men’s soccer - 2 years ago
mountainred No idea if this website is particularly accurate, but it has Cornell as the 4th team out. It seems to assume the committee will go straight down the RPI list. Cornell has two wins against teams they project in the field, Marist and UC Santa Barbara, but they are auto-bids with RPIs below Cornell. Otherwise, the best result is the draw with Syracuse RPI 56). TL/DR: ugarte is rby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
We’ll, look at the bright side. Tonight when I asked Alexa what the score was for the Cornell-Dartmouth football game, she said Dartmouth had scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to win 17-14 — not nearly as bad as in the universe in which most of us live. Let’s just move to the metaverse, and the football team will become almost respectable.by Swampy - Other Sports
Re: State of Cornell Athletics - 2 years ago
upprdeck rank the schools by how hard it is to get kids they want to recruit into the school to play a sport. A lot of this depends on the coach & the administration. If athletes had to meet the same standards as a school's overall selectivity, HYP would be perpetual doormats. Moreover, you would have low variability among sports with any given school. But Cornell has perpetual excellencby Swampy - Other Sports

Jim Hyla jtwcornell91 ursusminor upprdeck on the flip side since hockey is also a fan sport.. Talked with kids at multiple schools the last few days and they love the 3x3 and shootout. Most fans do and there are far more casual fans than hardcore. if you remove the PWR issues it is fun to watch for many people. Re: 3-on-3 overtime and the RPI & PWR - 2 years ago
jkahn For pairwise, we are actually under .500. Home wins are multiplied by a .8 factor, and home losses by 1.2. So our 2-0 record gets factored down to (1.1 x .8) wins and (.9 x 1.2) losses, totalling .88 wins and 1.08 losses. The committee in charge obviously thinks 3 vs. 3 overtime is fairly meaningless weighting it only .55 vs. .45, why not go back to 5 vs. 5. I understand the logic: weby Swampy - Hockey
Re: Lynah now at full capacity - 2 years ago
IIRC, a few years ago we played Wisconsin to triple OT in the NCAA semifinals. Remembering this I’m torn. Of course it was a single elimination game, so the in-season scenario did not apply. But had the game been in-season, I’d want to reward both teams for such a heroic show, OTOH, I’d @lso want to make the stakes high.by Swampy - Hockey
Re: Lynah now at full capacity - 2 years ago
jtwcornell91 ugarte love 3x3 sorry! (do not love 55% but would probably be fine if we could negotiate this to, say, 70%) I've just barely got used to the 3-2-1-0 point system in international/European hockey, but accepting an OT win as 55% of a win is a lot harder than 2/3 of a win. (I'd be reasonably happy with a 5-4-3-2-1-0 system where you lost a point for going to OT, and the shootout afteby Swampy - Hockey

Re: RIP my season tickets - 3 years ago
Jim Hyla Interestingly I went to Springsteen last night and at least 95-98% were wearing a mask, and they came around to tell all to put it on. Knowing that everyone, well of course probably not quite everyone, as there will always be a few cheaters, was vaccinated made me feel okay, but would have felt better if everyone took a Rapid Test before entering. Al DeFlorio Thanks, Al. The story is great. Funny, the last reunion I attended, I was going to suggest such a thing as a mandatory part of Orientation. (But the session ended before I could voice my suggestion.) It sort of solves my original question about where the quote comes from. The article says it's from a 1977 book by Frederick Rudolf. Re: New College Hockey Program? - 3 years ago
dbilmes This is interesting. Tennessee State, with support from the Nashville Predators, is seriously pursuing plans to become the first HBUC to have a Division I college hockey program. The Athletic also had coverage, but there's a paywall. Talk about an unlikely candidate! It would be great if they can pull it off. I wish them luck.by Swampy - Hockey

dbilmes Koll did an amazing job with the Cornell program. All we can do is thank him and wish him luck and hope that Grey can come close to filling his shoes. Agreed. But I'm getting tired of this. I couldn't fine a 1971 lacrosse thread, and I didn't want to start one. But here's an article about Cornell's role taking lacrosse from a parochial "Big 5" to the big time. Speaking of which, this year seems a bit like deja vu all over again.
