Re: Red Hot Hockey - post-game - 10 years ago
Dafatone The power play's been good enough this year that one hesitation-filled game doesn't worry me. I'm willing to blame the ice. The ice BU was skating on was a lot better, for sure.by Kyle Rose - Hockey

BMac From Adam's writeup on CHN: Adam Wodon (on CHN) "For whatever reason, a lot of the passes that went to the seam, our guys refused to shoot one-timers and force it to the net," Schafer said. "It's almost like they were looking to be perfect and they just refused to (shoot). And when they start doing that, they hesitate too much. ... Re: Duke rape accuser jailed for attempted murder (2010) - 10 years ago
Trotsky If you're scoring at home, the tally is now: Rich White Male Privilege 25 Trillion, Rich White Male Victimization 1. RWMV with a late push, though. Clearly, the legal system should have thrown the Duke lacrosse players to the wolves, because racial justice and some of those RWMs probably did something to deserve it anyway. Re: The Real Reason Harvard Sucks at Hockey - 10 years ago
Josh '99 Kyle Rose ursusminor Seriously, I would think that students who are admitted to a highly selective college, as Harvard is, would have read enough, whether it is books, newspapers or the Internet, that they would have picked up this information, even if it was never taught to them. Re: The Real Reason Harvard Sucks at Hockey - 10 years ago
ursusminor Granted that knowledge of facts has little to do with intelligence, although the ability to retain a lot of facts may have, but I would expect people who attend what is usually considered an elite college to know what the capital of our northern neighbor is. I'll bet you're disappointed a lot.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: The Real Reason Harvard Sucks at Hockey - 10 years ago
Towerroad I didn't know that, either. I probably would have guessed Toronto. TIL the capital of Canada is Ottawa. I wonder when I'll ever use that knowledge? These ambush-style proofs of ignorance only work when the target audience considers the information obvious. Thus, a video demonstrating Harvard students not being able to, say, enumerate the continents or point out Britain on a map woulby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: The End of Ivy Hockey Competitiveness? - 10 years ago
I think the athletic scholarship thing is a red herring. The Ivies already give athletic scholarships: they're called financial aid, and they level the playing field when recruiting athletes not from wealthy families. That's probably enough, because there are surely more than enough good hockey players from poor and middle class families. I basically think the game limit should be raised or elby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Clarkson 11/15 - 10 years ago
I don't think there's any question which was the better team tonight: Cornell's biggest problem was that they made mistake after mistake deep in their own end, leading to turnovers and scoring opportunities for Clarkson. From where I sat in section TV, Clarkson would have won this game decisively had they been better able to capitalize on those mistakes, because there were plenty of them. I seby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: 11/9 Union - 10 years ago
BearLoverand the improved ECAC is the biggest reason. Is it? What I see is a correlation between Cornell's recent woes and the rise of programs like Yale and Union and Quinnipiac, but I have seen no actual evidence the second is the cause of the first. Personally, I'd say problems #1 and #2 are (in no particular order) the difficulty the coaching staff has had in adjusting to the faster, lesby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Trotsky Kyle RoseYours is a fallacy that kills otherwise prudent investors all the time.I don't think either of us is saying anything strong enough to warrant a term like "fallacy." We are arguing differences in degree only -- when has a trend gone on long enough to constitute a preponderance of evidence, and when do past results "time out" in their relevance to predicting fuby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: 11/9 Union - 10 years ago
Trotsky Kyle RoseIn other words: past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The expression is "past performance is no guarantee..." Inductive reasoning is not proof, but it's still highly useful. Towerroad Trotsky TowerroadThe coach deserves to be judged on his entire record when he/she retires. Until then old mantra "What have you done for me lately" was never truer, just ask Joe Torre or Terry Francona. While this is what happens, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's rational. Trotsky 9 minutes before broadcast, Ivy Digital is AWOL. 9 minutes before broadcast, WHCU is still broadcasting football. 27-6 Dartmouth. 6:19 left in the game, which means you probably won't get anything until 7:15 at the earliest, unless they have some other backup plan in place. TimV I thought I saw a lot more creativity with the puck in the first period Agreed. I only watched the first period, and was impressed by Cornell's puck movement and how precise a lot of the passes were, as if the players intended to advance the puck through the neutral zone. Josh '99 RichH Jerseygirl Ehhhhhhhhhhh, I wouldn't call recruiting a 6'5"/233 goaltender wedging a fat kid in net (well, I would, if I were employing a dry sense of humor I guess?). Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
Townie Jim Hyla Maybe if we had more of this we'd have more cheering? That's a bingo. An obvious example: men's basketball attendance barely reached 1,000 before its 3-year Ivy dominance that filled Newman with "Newman Nation" t-shirts and heavy frat participation. Steve Donohue's miraculous success building a WINNING team filled the other 3,500 seats. Not surprisingly, attendance is nby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
So, to sum up: (1) Students are self-absorbed prats. (2) Students don't care enough about the games to get there early or even on-time. (3) Phones are the debil. (4) The AD and their usher thugs are tyrants who want to sacrifice atmosphere for atmosphere. (5) Cornell is no longer the big fish in a small pond. It's death by a thousand cuts. RichH Several years ago, I got to Lynah before the doors opened before a Harvard game, and just waiting around in the Bartels linking hallway near the usual ticket-taking spot, I was able to observe the pre-game pep-talk/meeting that Gene held with all the ushers. Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
Trotsky Scersk '97When did it all change? I think humor declined precipitously after 2005, and noise is now following suit. What all these data points are suggesting is that Lynah "declines" 8 years after one has graduated. Measurable. # of students, average arrival time, and noise level are all measurable.
