Re: Hockey Advisers - 12 years ago
ugarte I have read this over and over and, even with your antagonistic gloss, I can't figure out what your problem is. That people make decisions about things other than "merit"? That merit scholarships are bad? You've lost me. That the Ivy League schools' looking down their noses at other schools by supposedly not giving athletic merit scholarships is simply false. This ties into the oby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Hockey Advisers - 12 years ago
css228Pretty certain they do. Doesn't matter if your an athlete or not, but it may come up more in athlete's cases because they might be a bit more likely to get an offer from HYP than your average student Ding! Ding! Ding! You're a winner! This is part of why I say it's a smokescreen: it looks equitable on paper, but in reality its application skews toward athletes. But really, my point is laby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Hockey Advisers - 12 years ago
ugarte Kyle Rose This immediately makes me think of the cognitive dissonance involved in the Ivy League: its main purpose was to keep collegiate athletics non-professional, which means it is probably best understood as a cartel designed to keep from having to pay big-time athletes anything at all for the work they do for their respective schools; but now they basically do pay their athletes, whicby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Hockey Advisers - 12 years ago
Trotsky The question is are the athletes' financial packages "juiced" any more than the cellist's or the molecular biologist's? If not, then I'd argue that the athletes are still safely being kept in a condition of servitude. As they should be -- it's college, not cheer camp. Sorry, why? Why "safely"? Why "should be"? BTW, the one thing that jumped out at me wasby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Re: Cornell 4 Yale 2 - 12 years ago
jtwcornell91 How hard would it be to add "blank" (maybe white) wedges for Union and Quinnipiac to represent the years they were not in the league, so that a wedge of X degrees represents the same number of seasons for each team? (For that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing pie charts Vermont and Army added in the same way.) I think this change would miss the point of the chart. If you wantby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Re: Super Bowl post on the Hockey Board? - 12 years ago
Trotsky Bud sucks, but that ad is wonderful. Yeah, and it's a situation that I personally identify with: as any rec league player will tell you, 9 times out of 10 you play to an empty rink, and that tenth time it's some player's foolish girlfriend or mother, freezing her ass off watching amateurs play poorly. It must be cool to have a real crowd cheering for you.by Kyle Rose - Hockey

ugarte Jim Hyla But still, selling Budweiser to Canadians? What next, pitching Camaros to Germans? What, Canadians won't drink Belgian beer? What is Budweiser's connection to Belgium? If there is a joke I'm missing it. (Budvar is Czech, I thought.)by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: National Collegiate Hockey Conference - 12 years ago
TV deals do not work on the long tail because broadcasting consumes a lot of limited resources and so relies on large-scale viewership to be profitable. Cornell hockey, and the ECAC in general, are way out on the tail. The only reason why big college football teams, for instance, get TV deals is that there are lots of people who want to watch: their viewers include lots of people who didn't go toby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Red Cast Really Sucks - 12 years ago
angrybear Blah blah blah Sorry, but as others have pointed out, this is utter horseshit when you see what students at other schools are actually doing. And FWIW I'm not suggesting that Cornell's hockey streaming has to be as awesome as CBS's online offerings: I'm simply asking for better video quality and a cameraman who has some idea of where the puck is. I'm even willing to sacrifice overlaby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Red Cast Really Sucks - 12 years ago
Aaron M. Griffin I don't see why Cornell, the ECAC, or the Ivy League do not negotiate agreements with national television networks so that alumni and fans do not have to tolerate subpar coverage from whomever provides the RedCast coverage. ... I assume that in the Northeast that a network would gain appreciable ratings if it aired Hockey East and ECAC games each weekend. I'm going to go out oby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Red Cast Really Sucks^2 - 12 years ago
Jordan 04I have absolutely cut back my spending on Redcast due to the quality issues. Same here: no Redcast for me this year, or next year, or the year after, etc. until the quality and availability improves substantially. Fundamentally, the AD suffers from the same delusion that most of the rest of academia has: that price and cost are somehow causally connected. There is no such connection:by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Save the Palms! - 12 years ago
billhoward Xbox over meeting Ms. Right at the Palms? What's the world coming to? There was a lot of this going on, have no fear. I have to say, while the Palms is a complete dump on the inside, the real appeal is the crowd: on Saturday night, the bar went from basically empty to completely packed with people dancing on the seats in about 5 minutes. I have never seen anything like it. You can'tby Kyle Rose - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Save the Palms! - 12 years ago
ugarte (1) You need a little more nostalgia in your life. If you don't romanticize where you used to get stupid, why bother being young at all? I certainly didn't get out enough in college. But seriously, it's when romanticization turns into action to preserve the physical manifestation of the memory that people have gone over the line into missing the point. IMO. YMMV. Re: Save the Palms! - 12 years ago
jtwcornell91 Kyle Rose without Dino's, Johnny O's, and the Palms, more people will just crowd into Chapterhouse, Pixel, Ruloff's, the Nines, and Dunbar's, I have to say, that's my biggest worry, that the Palms' clientele will move to the Chapter House and mess it up. (Actually, I have occasionally noticed that happening already...) It's hard enough to get a seat there past 10pm as it is. Buby Kyle Rose - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Save the Palms! - 12 years ago
KeithK CAS In the late '70's, the Palms was a rare place in Collegetown which attracted both students and some townies. Had quite a streak going there in my senior year. Looks pretty much the same today as it did over 30 years ago. It needs to be saved. Maybe Elynah can start a fundraising campaign... Re: Dryden on the NHL's need to address concussions. - 12 years ago
Dafatone I'm torn. I'm really starting to wince when I see guys get whacked in the head in fights, but on the other hand, there's something to be said for players policing the game. That being said, I don't really see how my big goon fighting your big goon helps protect my star after he gets slashed by your small goon. I think the root of the problem is the moral hazard of too much protectiveby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Dryden on the NHL's need to address concussions. - 12 years ago
dbilmes Another article on the topic in today's NY Times, with one hockey official defending fighting and one calling for its abolition from the game. I think the rampant fighting is pathetic. Since getting back into watching NHL, I enjoy the quality of the hockey much more than I did a decade ago, but I find myself rolling my eyes whenever a fight starts. Re: MNF - 12 years ago
billhoward Kyle Rose Considering MNF is on ESPN and I don't have cable, I'm happy for it to be crap games I have no interest in. You'd probably be equally glad to miss the NFL Network's Thursday Night Football game this Saturday with Dallas beating up on Tampa Bay 28-0 at halftime. I have never seen a ThNF game because I don't want to encourage the bastards. NFL belongs on Sundays: period. Everytby Kyle Rose - Other Sports
Re: Sports phrases - enough, already - 12 years ago
jtn27 I've always hated phrases like "do what we do," and "they/we need to just play their/our game," "go out there and execute," and "do our thing." What do those things even mean? I first noticed them in athlete interviews in response to questions like "What do you need to do to go win today?" Re: BU's Trivino Arrested and Booted From Team - 12 years ago
Trotsky The Comments on that story are creepy. Agreed. Due process before throwing someone in prison is critical, but due process before throwing a known troublemaker off the team after another set of witnessed allegations of antisocial (not to mention criminal) behavior? redice Am I the only one that misses the "family time" on Thanksgiving weekend when I go to NYC for Red Hot Hockey? Yes, the wife goes along. But, the extended family is back in upstate NY doing things together and we miss out.
