Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Synergy - 21 years ago
Brother Mark, I think that Boston University's uniforms (and the Detroit Red Wings uniforms that may have inspired them) are absolute classics. I'd put 'em on my top 10 list of all-time greatest NCAA jerseys, without a millisec of hesitation. I was objecting to the concept of Cornell sweater replicas that featured the Cornell logo slapped onto an obvious Red Wings template.by Hillel - Hockey
ECAC logos - 21 years ago
Josh Herman sez: "They've actually started removing the ECAC patches..." They may have started to do so, but most of the ones I saw in December seemed to have their ECAC patches. That may be because I was looking mostly at the road/red stock, which appeared to be largely '01 and earlier. The '99ish-'00ish sweater I chose still has the ECAC patch (the old one with the torch, color-shiftby Hillel - Hockey
Good news ... is there an O'Byrne update? - 21 years ago
This is truly good news. We'll see if Schafer permits him to continue to be the risk-taking offensive defenseman he appears to have become. What's up with O'Byrne? Hooboy, I'd love to snatch one from Maine and one from Michigan State in this class. Salmela is a good, old-school Finnish name. Wonder if he's a cloaked import, like Doug.by Hillel - Hockey
Re: Game-worn uniforms (update from another satisfied customer) - 21 years ago
That's good news for replica-seekers, Adriano. Thanks for the correction. I must be thinking about another one of the manufacturers (at least one of 'em is doing the Red Wing Thing).by Hillel - Hockey
Re: Game-worn uniforms (update from another satisfied customer) - 21 years ago
I got my game-worn jersey over the holidays while visiting my family. Although John Hayes' description of the process on Adriano's FAQ is dead-on, I'll add a few more observations. The guy who handles the process in the Teagle issue room, William Reynolds, responded promptly to my spur-of-the-moment, holiday-impulse-purchase e-mail of inquiry. He's kind and patient. It was interesting to see whby Hillel - Hockey
Re: OT: Cornell to name new prez today - 21 years ago
Big Red Apple sez: "Lehman is Cornell '77. He has to have some good memories of Cornell hockey, right?" Hoooooboy, '77 is a fine vintage. Perhaps one of the finest CU sports salmon runs ever. I'm jealous. Not just good memories of another great hockey team (Ivy champs--women too). But think about this: Apart from the ugly football memories of getting fisted by Yale's Spagnola/Pagliaroby Hillel - Hockey
1972-73 - 21 years ago
Yes! Loved Ugolini, Marrett, Murray (was it really Murray who was with Carlo and Doug?). I completely forgot them. That was a fun year. At least until Boston Part II. A plague on Dean Talafous. I hated that game.by Hillel - Hockey
Tredway/Nethery/Kerling - 21 years ago
No doubt about it: The best line (offensively) in recent Cornell history is Tredway/Nethery/Kerling circa '78-'79. It's funny, I don't think of Nieuwendyk and Moeser together, but I imagine they must have been. The guy who really seemed to click with Moeser was Gary Cullen (a big old slug of a skater, but a smooth stickhandler/passer, and thus a perfect compliment for Duane). I can't remember whby Hillel - Hockey
LeNeveu - 21 years ago
Bill R '94 sez: "I would probably be more opposed to it if he was receiving a scholarship but still, he did get a spot at possibly compromised admissions standards." My understanding (based on second-hand, unconfirmed reports) is that LeNeveu is actually one of the best students on the team, perhaps one of the best in recent years. That doesn't mean that chits weren't used with admissiby Hillel - Hockey
Few shots -- a two-edged sword for goalies - 21 years ago
You're right, the low shots against total is extraordinary. But if you ask LeNeveu (or any other goalie), he'd tell you that it ain't necessarily the best thing for him. You get cold, stiff, and listless when you don't face a shot for long stretches of games -- and shot-blocking is great, but only if it's done with exquisite timing and without creating a screen. I've noticed some concern creepinby Hillel - Hockey
You're right about Shier's shot - 21 years ago
Defenseman Pete Shier '78 didn't just have the hardest shot in recent Cornell history (I don't remember anything before '70, and anything before '73 is hazy), he had the hardest shot I've ever witnessed in college hockey. It was a devastating weapon on the power play. He scored at least once from beyond the red line. The one I remember happened against Jim Craig and BU in an immensely satisfyingby Hillel - Hockey

Re: Preseason Polls - Cornell #1 (barely) - 21 years ago
Oops, sorry about the fourth/ninth transposition. But I'm still with the coaches: I say DU closer to ninth than fourth. But that doesn't mean that I don't fear them. They may have lost a ton of point production, but their ENTIRE defensive corps (including goalies) returns, including that weasel Boucher. As long as Irma la Bouche is there (only one more year--doesn't it seem like he's been thereby Hillel - Hockey
Re: Preseason Polls - Cornell #1 (barely) - 21 years ago
Interesting. The Coaches and the Media seem to more or less agree about each team, with one big exception: Dartmouth. Fourth in the Coaches Poll and Ninth in the Media Poll? I guess I'm with the coaches on that one. Also worth noting: For the first time (at least in my memory), all six of the players on the pre-season all-ECAC team are Ivy Leaguers.by Hillel - Hockey
[Lax] Brown home finale - 22 years ago
I've dreaded this game for months. I've been hoping it wouldn't matter. But it does. Pretty simple: We lose, we're out. Add to that the usual butterflies of senior day (more below). Then throw in the post-game retirement of 9/11 victim Eamon McEneaney's number 10. Presto, you get the most emotionally intense regular season home game since... since... the bleepin' eighties? No, maybe ever. And I'mby Hillel - Hockey
Midseason review - 22 years ago
Half-way through the season (calendarwise), and I'm delighted. I admit I was cranky after the 2001 season. Low, low, low expectations. When I learned about Egan's unexplained departure and Scott Lee's broken foot, I began to prepare for something ugly. Butt ugly. Then, as I stood in the rain at halftime of the Georgetown game and pondered the Hoyas numbing shot advantage, I realized that there isby Hillel - Hockey
