Cornell Hockey In My Debut Novel (19 replies)

Hello all,

This definitely falls in the realm of shameless self-promotion, but I wanted to let you know that my debut novel, Robert's Rules of Karaoke, will be published as an e-book by TheWriteDeal.org this Sunday, and while it's certainly not a sports book, there is a college hockey thread that runs through the story, and the book's ninth chapter details a visit to Lynah Rink (and a post-game trip to the Hot Truck). The game in the book is based over Cornell's win over Quinnipiac on November 3, 2007, and while I'm sure those of you were at that game are quite certain that there was no one wearing a BU jersey in Lynah that night, I hope you'll allow me a little artistic license. ;-)

Seriously, I know it's not exactly Love Story, but I hope some of you will check it out.

Robert's Rules of Karaoke: [www.thewritedeal.org]
RROK on Facebook: [www.facebook.com]
RROK on Twitter: [twitter.com]

Thanks so much for your support. I've enjoyed my own trips to Lynah, and I particularly appreciated the band's invitation to play with them during my last visit in 2007...which, oddly enough, was also for a Cornell-Quinnipiac game (and yes, the videos still exist): [slog.cstv.com]

Best regards,
It has come to this: The Harvard Corporation turns to [www.groupon.com] Groupon to sell off damaged goods (tickets to see Harvard hockey). $10 gets you two tickets to see Harvard play Dartmouth. RPI and Clarkson are valued more highly, 2/$15. The blurb says, "Approximately 2,800 Crimson fans pack the Bright Hockey Center during glacial bouts, rattling visiting squads with wall-shaking decibel levels and inspiring the home team by doo-wopping the university fight song during timeouts." There's also an Ask a Question button. Perhaps you can ask the timeless question about Harvard hockey.

I was wondering if there is/can be/will be a gathering place for Cornell fans to watch the game in Philly. I figured that I might as well post this now, after a weekend like this, one cannot help but look to the future for better things.

Ticket prices fall (so did attendance last year, by a third). $5 domestic beer. Fans can bring food and water (limited quantities) into the park. One of the annoyances of major league sports is even when you find half-price tickets through your church, school, company, or civic group, you're still paying full price to park, buy hot dogs, and drink beer. Some teams (NJ Devils for one) when they do half-price tickets also include a $10 food voucher. I think the actual cost of attending a sports event has outstripped the cost of living.

A little over eight years ago, a newly-minted Cornell alum and devoted member of the Lynah Faithful who had recently moved to the Boston area learned about the eLynah Forum. That user's second post ever, in the (now epic, but then-only-a-few-hours-old) "HARVARD SUCKS" thread, sought information on how to find tickets to the away Harvard game. Someone suggested asking a friend who attends Harvard, even after it was clear to me the user didn't have one, so I jumped in:

You're assuming that everybody has a friend at Hahvahd - which, from reading dss28's posts, I infer that he does not.

dss28 quickly replied:

Pssst.... she. I'm a she. ;-)

Over the years from 1999 to 2009, Daina and I attended literally dozens of the same Cornell hockey games both home and away, including ECAC and NCAA tournament games. We had many of the same friends, and hung out with many of the same people both before and after the games, often in the same places, but somehow we didn't meet. She moved to New York City in 2005, right around the time I finished law school. Eventually we each started showing up in the CC fields of respective mutual friends' emails about roadtrips, and somehow I even agreed to include her when I bought tickets several months in advance for the second edition of Red Hot Hockey, but we still hadn't met.

Then, on March 29, 2009, Daina and I both went to Ship of Fools on the Upper East Side of Manhattan to watch the NCAA Quarterfinal against Bemidji State. I was there to meet friends; she was there with her uncle, also a Cornell alum. The outcome of the game was a disappointment, but the rest of the evening was not. A month later, Daina and I were dating. We moved in together four days before the third edition of Red Hot Hockey.

This past Saturday, a few hours before the home Harvard game, at the top of Libe Slope as the sun began to set, I asked Daina to marry me.

She nodded vigorously and said, "UH HUH!" ::banana::
I'm pretty sure the Harvard game ended in a tie, but neither of us was able to pay much attention. ::innocent::
I introduced Daina to Coach Schafer at the Boatyard Grill after the game, where he offered his congratulations. Although I think at least a few marriages have resulted from Cornell hockey fandom over the years, as far as we know, this is the first one "resulting from" eLynah.

Joe Paterno / limp college presidents (2 replies)

The meaning of Joe Paterno's life? Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe staked out a middle ground in today's column: "Joe Paterno did not personally perpetrate evil. What he’s being accused of in L’Aaffaire Sandusky is a failure to recognize evil" ... "He could have taken a page from the Red Auerbach book and [at 70, 75 retired and] been Joe Paterno, lecturer, consultant, raconteur, the Grand Old Man of Football. It could have been a delightful full-time job ... I’m guessing that the 75-year old Joe Paterno, good Catholic that he was, could not wrap his head around the idea of man-on-boy child molestation. I’m guessing he, like many people who never grasped the severity of the child abuse charges leveled against all those priests, regarded such activity as creepy, not criminal."

Ugarte takes a harder line in the When We Play Penn State thread. Jeff Hopkins is onto something in his follow-on post: "[Paterno] didn't fail his duty. His supervisors failed THEIR duty. He reported the incident to his supervisors and THEY covered it up. And that includes the current governor of PA, who was the local DA at the time." (Maybe they all failed their duty?)

Beyond the DAs who don't do their jobs, this may be one more example where the university president lacks the cojones or clarity of vision to do the right thing. Sports Illustrated in its 11/21/11 cover story The Shame of Penn State relates how Penn State President (1995-2011) Graham Spanier in 2004 "visited Paterno at his home to suggest that, at age 77 and after a 3-9 season in '03, he should retire. Paterno, in effect, told them to get off his lawn. They acceded."

In the Duke lacrosse scandal, President Richard Broadhead fumbled twice. First, he let the team get out of control years before several players in 2006 were accused (falsely) of sexual assault of an exotic dancer (compare that to the Coach K's squeaky clean basketball team). Then Broadhead let events ride him and he shut down the team for the rest of the season, then was slow to recognize the charges were trumped up and the DA was in fact the biggest criminal in the case. Broadhead's apologia, later: "[The case highlights] crucial problems of our culture -- problems of achieving justice in a media-saturated society, problems of fundamental fairness to individuals, and problems in the way the American public is informed and misinformed about the world we live in."

Black students unhappy with a conservative columnist of the Daily Pennsylvanian stole and destroyed the DP's press run. President Sheldon Hackney blew off the issue. A columnist, John Leo, created the Sheldon Award for "the university president who does the most to look the other way when free speech is under assault on campus." (This and other stories about how college administrations aren't bothered by ill treatment of the campus press in a now-old article: [articles.latimes.com])

Cornell President James Perkins was accused of coddling students during the Vietnam war and campus protests including the 1969 Willard Straight Hall takeover. Despite armed students inside the Straight, nobody died, unlike at Kent State a year later. For sompe people, the scars linger four decades later and it's hard to be as dispassionate as you might looking at the problems at Penn State or Duke.

Tonight (Darthmouth) is really really really really bad. Michigan vs. Notre Dame is very clear in High Def on NBC sports. When is Cornell and the ECAC going to wake up and get quality TV & streaming exposure. NBC is going to be broadcasting most of Notre Dame's ice hockey games as part of the deal to do continue to do Notre Dame football. That and Notre Dame moving to Hockey East made the deal to NBC a no brainer. Think that will help recruiting? I do not understand why there is not high def streaming available for PS3, ipad2...etc. Cornell is an elite school with computer and communications departs. Let the students produce and engineer the games in the best technology available.

Tonight the Red Cast it has worked best opening one window for video and another for radio, because the audio for the video is out of sync on the video channel. Yet the radio channel is in sync with the video, go figure.
