Big Red Football Picked Fourth In Preseason Ivy League Media Poll

Aug. 8, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Cornell football team was picked fourth in the Ivy League's annual preseason media poll announced on Tuesday morning at media day at the Yale Golf Course. It is the highest Cornell has been picked since head coach Jim Knowles took over the program two years ago, though the Big Red has achieved upper-division finishes in each of his first two years.

Harvard was selected to finish first, receiving nine of 16 first-place votes and 116 points to easily outdistance second-place Penn (99, 2). They were followed by Brown (94, 3) and the Big Red (79) to round out the top four. Yale (77, 2), Princeton (62), Dartmouth (31) and Columbia (18) rounded out the eight-team field. The 16 voters represented each of the eight Ivy markets. The Ivy football season begins on Sept. 17, when all eight teams face non-conference foes. The league season gets underway the following week.

The return of junior Luke Siwula highlights an offense that led the Ancient Eight in rushing by nearly 30 yards per game (248.6), ranking second among the league's returning runners with 1,086 yards and eight touchdowns. The defense, led by senior defensive end Jonathan Lucas, ranked second nationally in rushing defense (88.3 ypg.) and first in the Ivy League in total defense (261.3).

The Big Red opens the 2006 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at Bucknell.
