Doug Derraugh was named the Cornell women's hockey coach, Big Red athletics director Andy Noel announced Thursday.
A former Big Red men's hockey player who played professionally for 13 years, Derraugh returned to Ithaca last season to coach the women's team on an interim basis.
He guided Cornell to a 9-18-1 record last year, tripling the Big Red's win total of 2004-05. The squad scored 12 more goals, allowed 18 fewer and had 34 more points than the previous season, and defeated No. 9 Harvard, 4-3.
Derraugh replaces Melody Davidson, who was on leave last year guiding the Canadian women's national team to a gold medal in the Turin Winter Olympics.
Davidson recently accepted a full-time position as general manager and head coach of Canada's Women's High Performance Program, a job that includes some coaching of the women's national team. She also will be an assistant for a boys' junior hockey team in Calgary, Alberta.
Derraugh was a co-captain his senior year at Cornell, leading the Big Red to an NCAA tournament appearance while scoring 30 goals with 36 assists. The 30 goals is the most ever scored by a senior at Cornell. Overall, he ranks 10th in career scoring with 153 points (66 goals, 87 assists).
After his time at Cornell, Derraugh played professionally in Norway, Germany, Austria and Finland.
