Philadelphia Wings rookie honored for leadership and sportsmanship
Cornell Alumni Sean Greenhalgh '05 Wins NLL Sportsmanship Award
May 1, 2006
NEW YORK - The naming of the 2006 National Lacrosse League season awards winners began with Cornell University graduate Sean Greenhalgh '05 garnering the Bowflex Sportsmanship Award. In his rookie season of 2006, the Philadelphia Wings forward led his team in goals with 31 and was tied for the team lead in points with 73. Greenhalgh played in all sixteen of the Wings' games, and was only assessed two penalties on the season for a total of four penalty minutes. Greenhalgh's leadership and sportsmanship helped fill the void left by former all-pro Tom Marechek's. He is the first ever rookie to win the award.
Greenhalgh also collected eight weekly awards throughout the season, including two straight Rookie of the Week honors to end the season. His performance and leadership helped to lead the Wings to an 8-8 record, a two game improvement from their 2005 record of 6-10. Greenhalgh secured this year's honor by showing great leadership, character and above all sportsmanship throughout the season. The St. Catherines, Ontario native was acquired by the Wings in the 2005 Entry Draft out of Cornell University. Greenhalgh was selected with the third overall selection.
Previous winners of the award include Gary Gait in both 2004 and 2005, Peter Lough in 2004 (co-winner with Gait), Chris Driscoll in 2003 and Jim Veltman in 2002. The award winners are chosen by a vote of the leagues coaches, general managers, and executives.
The league will announce its season award winners over the next two weeks, leading up to the 2006 RBK NLL Championship Game presented by Edge Active. The Buffalo Bandits host the Colorado Mammoth in the championship game on Saturday, May 13 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and Fox Sports World Canada.
