A separate thread, here, on how schools respond to incidents involving much or all of a team.

1999-2000, Vermont suspends season in January in the wake of an Oct. 2 hazing incident and apparent lies by players during the school investigation. [www.uscho.com]

2004, St. John's kicks out one player, another withdraws, a third is suspended after an incident in/outside a strip club first called gang rape (until the woman is charged with lying and extortion -- not that I want to suggest any parallels to Duke). [query.nytimes.com]

2005-06 (JanFeb), two Union hockey players lose control of their senses, drink, cause damage to U property, get suspended for season. But this was pretty clearly two individuals, not the team. [www.uscho.com]

Other?

Sixth rape allegation surfaces at CU
Friday, February 20, 2004 Posted: 3:44 AM EST (0844 GMT)
BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) -- Already under heavy scrutiny for allegedly using sex as a recruiting tool, the University of Colorado football program Thursday suffered another setback: a sixth rape allegation against a player. The allegation comes a day after head coach Gary Barnett was suspended from the program for comments demeaning the only woman to have ever played on the team. Katie Hnida, a Colorado placekicker in 1999, has alleged she was raped by a teammate.

"I don't know that at this point in time you can say anything has gone wrong," he [Barnett] said. "I think there are a lot of allegations. At this date, there has yet to be anything proven, there has yet to be any charges brought."

Barnett hired 1999.
Incidents go back to around 2000.
Charges went big time early 2004.
Finally released December 2005.
Cashed out with $3 million severance.

What do we figure the ratio of reported to unreported incidents is, given the power of athletic departments to cover their tracks? 1:10? 1:50?

Add the 2006 Duke Men's Lacrosse team to the list of season cancellations. Coach resigns as well.

Imagine how the parents are feeling...you go from being so proud of your son. "Yes, Robert is doing well. He's on the lacrosse team at Duke. Thanks for asking". To having your son be part of a team that is making the news in an absolutely awful way. Must be awkward around the watercooler.
