AFAIK, every match goes to the favorite (I'm not sure about Hwt.) and Cornell wins 19-14 over Lehigh.

Mazzurco wasn't wrestling, and would have been the favorite at 184, but neither was Lehigh's 165 Troy Letters. Prior to his injury, Letters was one of the top ranked wrestlers in his weight class and would have been the favorite over Anceravage. Cornell looks to be the strongest team in the EIWA in the conference and NCAA tournaments.

I went to the match, the attendance was over 4400 which was amazing. Nickerson looks great, he was really calm and had some textbook takedowns. It was nice to see they didn't wear those goofy looking uniforms today too.

Mazzurco did wrestle and won at 184. Lehigh may have an edge at the EIWAs because they have a shot at placing in every weight, whereas we have a couple that are quite weak. The absence of Letters tipped the balance to us today, but that's wrestling.

I was a bit annoyed by the slight to Cornell wrestling at the very end of the story comparing Cornell to Iowa. [www.news.cornell.edu] I'm not denigrating the Iowa program in the least, but I think Cornell's deserves a little more respect.

Thanks for the correction, Al. I saw that Miracola wrestled and assumed that it was at 184. Serves me right for skimming.

David - I don't think that the intent was to slight the Cornell wrestling program, only to point out the seriousness with which Iowa takes its wrestling. Cornell has a fine tradition in wrestling, and the turnout to the match today is nothing short of stunning, but I don't think you can reasonably compare the importance of wrestling at Cornell to that at Iowa.

Or the relative success.

Iowa's wrestling "dynasty"--20 NCAA team championships in the 26 years from 1975 through 2000--ranks up there with UCLA basketball under Wooden, and ahead of Indiana swimming under Counsilman and Oklahoma football under Wilkinson.
